RENAULT 5 Electric

Renault Zoé or Future Renault 5 were cited as an example by Clément Beaune, (but none of Stellantis, as it is strange !)). Electric cars eligible for social leasing at € 100/month will necessarily be French or European. Dacia Spring and other affordable Chinese models will not be accessible through this. The list will evolve over time according to the new electric models which will appear at necessarily affordable prices.

RENAULT 5 Electric (2023) - Exit date, price, autonomy and technical sheet

The neo-retro seems to be still paying in the automotive world with a large number of positive opinions on social networks concerning the Renault 5 prototype presented by Luca de Meo on January 14, 2021. This 100% electric vehicle takes up the stylistic codes of the eponymous city car released in the 70s. This concept car, which was one of the big surprises during the presentation of the “Renaulution” strategic plan of the diamond brand, should lead to a series model by 2023.

Renault seems to want to reconnect with the past, by presenting a prototype of city dwellers which undoubtedly recalls memories moved to all the nostalgic for the R5. 100% electric and modern, the one that takes up the features of the legendary French car manufacturer made between 1972 and 1984, is the archetype of what the brand knows how to do better in terms of “neo-retro”. The bet had been succeeded in launching the Alpine brand and the sublime modern A110 model, this undoubtedly inspired the brand’s designers to reimagine the Renault 5. Luca de Meo even mentioned a possible return of the Renault 4 appellations and space for future models, which will be 100% electric or at least electrified (Horizon 2025).

Renault’s design team led by Gilles Vidal has achieved this very nice reinterpretation of the R5, with all the details that allow it to be identified with this model at first glance despite an obviously very modern look. They could not do without wings extended to the back and vents at the bottom of the vertical lights at the rear, in order to give more character to this prototype of electric city car, elements which obviously recall the impressive R5 Turbo. This detail had already been integrated, less subtly still, in the stern of the latest generation of Twingo. The painting evoking the yellow Sirius (Renault Sport) used for the Renault 5 prototype marks the sporting side of the electric city car while the offbeat logo is a final wink of the manufacturer at its old model.

Estimation of motor power and its autonomy

Renault does not reveal any information concerning the powertrain of this concept car, or even the city car who will result from it. But the sporting aspect of the R5 prototype allows us to imagine a more efficient electric engine than that of the current Zoe and its 80 kW (110 hp) or 100 kW (135 hp) depending on the versions. Rather well placed in autonomy, the French electric city car offers up to 395 km (or 385 km) in WLTP cycle.

Estimate of its price

Increasingly accessible, electric vehicles democratize as the sales figures swell, which can allow a rate of less than € 30,000 excluding bonuses for the entry level of the 100% electric R5. In the meantime, Renault offers original creations to occupy the spirits, like the Renault 5 Diamant, dressing the very first generation Art Deco, in collaboration with the interior designer Pierre Gonalons.

Betting on the return of the legendary name R5, the French brand will launch this new small electric car in 2023 on the basis of the Renault 5 prototype prototype.

Dimensions and style of the electric R5

The electric R5 is part of the new Renaulution plan. The CEO Luca de Meo introduced a Renault 5 prototype concept on January 14, 2021, bringing a first preview of what serial version might look like.

Retro-futurist, the aesthetic orientation of the small 5-seater city car takes up certain codes of the 1970s model. The new R5 is precisely inspired by the R5 Turbo version with generous rear wings and small black scoops. The back optics also lean in nostalgia, while the offbeat logo is a nod to the past.

Combining red border, black roof contrasting with the yellow shade, the “Renault five” also brings originality. Its charging hatch is housed in an unprecedented place, on the hood before the left amount. In terms of dimensions, the serial R5 could measure about 4 meters long. A derived model, which would be a new electric R4, will arrive in 2025.

Motorization, battery and autonomy of the electric R5

The Small Electric of Renault will rest on the CMF-B EV platform. This technical basis is the evolution of that of the hybrid clio. Although it is not fully provided for electricity at the start, it will allow the R5 to be more efficient than the Zoe. Renault, however, did not communicate on the technical characteristics. With its sporting DNA, an engine close to the 100 kW/136 hp ZOE is possible.

Regarding the autonomy of the electric R5, everything will depend on the size of its battery. By 2023, Renault could already improve the density and the current 50 kWh pack of the ZOE. The 40 kWh that designed for the entry level of the electric megane could also be sufficient. We can thus count on a minimum of 300 km of autonomy in a single load.

Electric Renault 5 Marketing and Price

At the heart of the plan produced 2021-2025 of the tricolor group, the electric R5 will be released 2023. With an end of the ZOE expected in 2024, the future R5 could therefore replace it in the long term.

In terms of prices, nothing has been announced at the moment. Thanks to the drop in the price of cells, the manufacturer should offer its electric R5 at a price less than 30.000 € excluding government aid. An Alpine R5 sporting version is also in the boxes. It will also be 100% electric.

The Future R5 of Renault is one of the hypotheses presented by Clément Beaune, while he was questioned about the future social leasing at € 100/month.

While Elisabeth Borne had somewhat sowed doubt about social leasing, Clément Beaune gave a clearer outline about what is developing by the government. Interviewed by France Info on May 25, the Minister of Transport clarified that this social leasing would aim to help a minimum of 100,000 households with modest income, to go to the electric car, by the end of the five -year term.

Confirmation of the calendar for a concrete start in 2024

The implementation of registrations should be done by November so that the first beneficiaries of social leasing can physically recover their electric cars in 2024.

Negotiations with financial partners are still under discussion on this element. Financial partners and/or leasing services will receive public money to ensure the accessibility of this offer to the biggest numbers. This device should allow households that do not currently have access to the purchase or rental of an electric car to no longer be excluded from the energy transition.
