Electric radiator control

☀️ Comfort : the pilot wire does not transmit any tension. The radiator strives to maintain the set temperature.

How the pilot wire of a radiator works ?

THE pilot wireblack – is present on any electric radiator. However, it is not necessarily available in all accommodation. Where to find it ? How the pilot wire of an electric radiator works ? How to save energy using the programmer ? The point with Izi by EDF.

The pilot wire of a radiator: what is ?

The pilot wire is a thread that allows a Centralized management of electric heating systems of a house or an apartment. Thanks to the pilot wire, you can:

 Order several devices at the same time (convectors, radiating radiators, inertia radiators, heating floor, etc.);

 Automatically adjust the heating power of all your heating devices according to a single instruction;

 Define heating areas (living room, kitchen, bedrooms, etc.);

 Configure heating hours (the day, to get up, in the evening, at night, etc.);

 Master your energy consumption and save money, especially by cutting heating during your absences.

To identify it, it’s easy. The pilot wire is black (or gray). All the radiators (or almost) available on the market are equipped with a pilot wire, in addition to the neutral, phase wire and possibly earth wire, at the level of the electrical connection.

Without the pilot wire technology, you should control each heating device individually. Which is obviously much less practical in winter period.

You don’t have a pilot wire ? Instead, install connected radiators with Izi by EDF

Is the radiator with pilot wire compatible with all electrical installations ?

To be able to use a radiator with pilot wire, your electrical installation must still be compatible. Concretely, it must beAn additional electric wire (black) has been planned during built -in or apparent electric wiring.

The pilot wire circulates in the accommodation and connects all the locations intended to receive a heating device. The pilot wire is then connected to a programmer which is connected to all the radiators of the home.

Nowadays, wiring of the pilot wire is very widely practiced in new accommodation. Fil pilot technology has become A standard since the 1995s. However, some very recent new accommodation (and already equipped with connected and twinned electric radiators) are not provided.

You don’t have a pilot wire ? Good news, you can always centralize the control of your radiators. To do this, it will be necessary to use a electric radiator programmer by radio wave or by CPL. You will also need to install a small receiver next to or at the back of each radiator. Another solution: install new ones Connected electric radiators to your smartphone !

Operation of a radiator with pilot wire: to discover the different modes

How a radiator works with pilot wire ? The pilot wire programmer sends to all radiators of orders to adjust their heating power. When the radiator’s pilot wire receives the signal, it adapts its operation to respect the heating order and the set temperature defined on its on -board thermostat.

The radiator pilot wire can receive 6 types of electrical signals which correspond to 6 different orders:

☀️ Comfort : the pilot wire does not transmit any tension. The radiator strives to maintain the set temperature.

 eco : a voltage of 230 V is permanently applied. The radiator maintains a temperature of 3 ° C lower than the comfort temperature. This is the economic mode.

❄️ Hors frost : This is a 230 V voltage with a negative filtered alternation. The radiator is in free frost mode: it ensures a minimum temperature of 7 ° C.

 Stop : This time it is a voltage of 230 V with positively filtered alternation. The radiator is at a complete stop.

Comfort -1 ° C : the pilot wire transmits a voltage of 230 V for 3 seconds then no signal for 5 minutes, and so on. The targeted temperature is then 1 ° C below the comfort temperature.

Comfort -2 ° C : The principle is similar to that of comfort -1 ° C, but the periods of transmission of the signal are extended to 7 seconds (instead of 3). We then target a 2 ° C temperature below the comfort temperature.

The user can then juggle these different modes Using the programmer, by zone in particular. It defines the heated level desired according to the moment of the day and the occupation of the premises.

Need a more speaking programming example ?
✔️ During the night (from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.): eco mode
✔️ Wake up (6 a.m. to 9 a.m.): Comfort mode
✔️ When the accommodation is unoccupied (from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.): Comfort mode -2 ° C
✔️ When the occupants are back to the home (from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.): Comfort mode.

Principle of the pilot wire for electric radiators

Pilot wire radiator driver

Pilot wire piloting is a French specificity.

We will be able to order the operation of a radiator (pilot) using a wire in which an alternating current of 230V ac.

Think about it: Cut the circuit breaker of the pilot wire for any manipulation

There are 6 standard orders that will be transmitted from the driver to the radiators. To be understood by the radiator, each order has its own electrical signal.

THE 4 main orders are :

> Comfort: no tension on the pilot wire (as if you had not connected it). The radiator works in comfort mode.

> Eco (= reduced): 230V voltage permanently applied. Reduced from 3 to 4 ° C compared to the configured comfort temperature. For the night or for absences of a few hours.

> Hors gel: 230V voltage permanently applied but the positive alternation is filtered (only the negative alternation remains). Maintain a temperature of 8 ° C in order to preserve the habitation of the frost during a prolonged absence in winter.

> Start: 230V voltage permanently applied but the negative alternation is filtered (only the positive alternation remains)

It is the thermostat integrated into the electric radiator that will receive and interpret this order which triggers the appropriate behavior.
