Air purifier test, the 4 best air purifiers.

The 4 best air purifiers

All models are available and marketed on the European market. Electrolux, one of the major players in the air purifier market, no longer offers a mid -range model. The old EAP300 model has been removed from the market and is no longer available.

Test information

Testfakta Research has carried out comparative laboratory tests at the request of the Korean manufacturer Coway on air purifiers intended for the medium -sized parts. The aim of these tests were to compare the performance of a representative sample of comparable air purifiers, available on the European market.

The selection was made by the Testfakta Research Institute and includes models of major brands available on the European market. In terms of capacity, this selection of air purifiers represents the mid -range. This segment brings together purifiers with a CADR¹ declared capacity between 250 and 350 cubic meters per hour, which corresponds to a room of a surface between 50 and 70 square meters²².
Since capacity declarations are not harmonized, the values indicated vary from one manufacturer to another. Some indicate the surface in square meters, others the capacity in cubic meters. The value in cubic meters can only refer to air flow or the effective capacity of purifiers to eliminate harmful particles in the air.
All selected air purifiers aspire the stale air using a mechanical fan and have different types of filters that eliminate particles. Some products are also equipped with other techniques such as ionization and UV light.

¹ The CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) is a measure of capacity recognized in the sector, which indicates the capacity of the purifier to eliminate particles in the air.
² It is calculated on the basis of a room with a ceiling height of 2.4 meters and an air renewal of the part at least twice per hour.

Laboratory tests were carried out by Intertek Testing & Certification and SGS-IBR Laboratories in the United Kingdom. Intertek was responsible for assessing ergonomics and measuring sound levels. SGC-IBR has carried out the purified air flow measurements. The test protocol, which is based on official requirements and guidelines, has been established in consultation with the laboratories responsible for tests.

The following purifiers were tested:

  • COWAY AP-1220B
  • Philips AC2889/10
  • BlueAir Classic 280i
  • Mi (Xiaomi) Mi Air Purify 2h AC-M9-AA
  • Woods al 310 / ELFI 300
  • Rowenta Pure Air Genius Pu3080
  • Sharp UA-PG50E-W
  • Stadler Form Roger Little
  • Dyson TP04
  • Vax AC02AMV1
  • SOEHNLE AIRFRESH Clean Connect 500
  • Alfda alr300 Comfort
  • Winix Wacu300

All models are available and marketed on the European market. Electrolux, one of the major players in the air purifier market, no longer offers a mid -range model. The old EAP300 model has been removed from the market and is no longer available.

Laboratory tests focused on the following aspects:

HAS. Measures made at 37 dB or at the nearest level below 37 dB

  • Purified air flow for pollens and dust
  • Noise level (instrumental measure)
  • Energy consumption

B. Measures made at maximum power

  • Purified air flow for pollens and dust
  • Noise level (instrumental measure)
  • Energy consumption
  • Change and cleaning the filter
  • Screen and menus
  • Orders and possible remote controls
  • Programming and settings

The capacity of purifiers to purify air has been tested in accordance with the ANSI/AHAM AC-2015 standard. The tests made it possible to measure the capacity of purifiers to eliminate different types of particles (dust and pollen) in the air of a room. The purified air flow is indicated in Cadr (Clean Air Delivery Rate) and expressed in cubic meters of pure air per hour.

The quantity of purified square meters depends on the purified air flow (CADR) associated with the number of times the volume of air of the part is renewed per hour. According to the Asthma and Nordic allergies association, an air purifier must renew the air of a bedroom twice per hour. A 25 square meter bedroom with a 2.4 -meter ceiling height has a volume of 60 cubic mothers. To purify the air of the room, the purified air flow (CADR) must be at least 120 cubic meters per hour. To purify the air of the part three, four or five times per hour (which recommend part of the manufacturers and resellers), the air purifier must present a higher flow accordingly accordingly.

The sound level is an important aspect, Because air purifiers are often used in bedrooms. According to the directives of the Swedish allergies association, the purified air flow of the purifier must be reported at the sound level. The Allergies association specifies that the sound level in a bedroom must not exceed 30 dB (A), which corresponds to the threshold fixed by the WHO for the noise pollution behind sleep disturbances.

During the tests, the performance of air purifiers was evaluated at 37 dB (A) and at maximum power. Before the start of the tests, the sound level was measured for the various power settings to determine the operating mode at 37 dB or at the lower level closest to 37 dB.
The sound level was measured in the laboratory. The measurements were made one meter from the air purifier and from all angles (the average value of these measures constituting the sound level of the air purifier). 37 dB (a) corresponds to 30 dB (a) to just over 2 meters, which represents a reasonable distance in a standard bedroom of around 10 m2.

Most purifiers have relatively low power (W), But as they are designed to operate more or less continuously, their energy consumption is also important. Consumption has been measured for 37 dB (A) and maximum power adjustment.

Ergonomic evaluation including the filter change, settings and controls, screens and menus. The assessment was carried out by laboratories experts.

Some devices purify air using conventional and ionization filters. Ionization is a technique that negatively loads the particles present in the air and fixes them on a positive metal plate inside the purifier. If the ionization purifier not only loads the particles, but also the air itself, it generates ozone. Beyond certain thresholds, ozone is dangerous for health. The threshold in force for ozone (EU directive) is 0.055 ppm (part per million). The laboratory measured The difference in ozone rate between incoming air and outgoing air For the various purifiers. None of the devices tested has rejected ozone levels above the current EU recommendation (0.055 ppm).

The test results were performed in consultation with the laboratory. The evaluation was carried out on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best score, on the basis of the results of laboratory tests. A note less than 6 is only attributed when performance is low or insufficient compared to expectations that can be had for this type of product.

The notes obtained during the different parts of the test were weighted with the following coefficients:

Measures made at 37 dB or at the nearest level below 37 dB: 45 %

  • Purified air flow for pollens and dust 67 %
  • Noise level (instrumental measure) 22 %
  • Energy consumption 11 %

Measures made at maximum power: 45 %

  • Purified air flow for pollens and dust 67 %
  • Noise level (instrumental measure) 22 %
  • Energy consumption 11 %
  • Change and cleaning the 50 % filter
  • Screen and menus 17 %
  • Orders 17 %
  • Programming and settings 17 %

Our test process is based on three criteria: design, functionality and performance. We first examined the quality of the materials, the design, the ergonomics and the transportability of the purifier. Access to the filter and the quality of the latter are also criteria that we have taken into account.

To measure performance, we have led several tests over time in order to assess the various functionality and the real efficiency of the purifier on the different particles, odors and gas.

We have the air purifys of a small room in which we burn a candle, then in a living room while timing the speed of purification. An external air quality detector helped us assess the overall efficiency of the purifier. We have also measured the noise level of different operating speeds of the device.
