Graphics cards: how to check your model and update your drivers?

You must always make sure that your PC is updated, especially when new “Zero-Day” type security flaws are discovered and corrective are published. Windows Update is, of course, your first line of defense.

But the graphic part of your computer often requires special attention. Whether it is a Tour PC equipped with several components that you have installed yourself or a laptop, your screen is equipped with a system and a graphics card.

This system, called GPU, graphics card or graphic processing unit, is responsible for displaying images on the screen as quickly as possible.

Video game bodies often spend hundreds, even thousands of euros to buy GPUs. Some PCs can even operate two or three GPUs at the same time. For our point, we will focus on the GPU installed in your machine and how to update it, assuming that there is only one GPU.

Another thing to note: laptops are sometimes equipped with gaming quality graphics cards, but rather than being separate cards, they are chipsets installed on the computer card of the computer. Anyway, they make the pixels move on your screen all.

With that, let’s dive into the heart of the matter.

Which graphics card do I have ? How to check your GPU and your drivers ?

Let’s start by looking at which graphic system you use. It may be a separate card or the chipset of your machine. In any case, these steps work.

1. Open the Windows Start menu

Press the starter from Windows, this will display a search and selection box.

Let’s stay in the shutter Advanced display and let’s start.

1. Open the properties of the display adapter

Manual Download of Pilots

One of the most effective ways to update your drivers is to go to manufacturers’ sites and download the appropriate drivers. I generally recommend going to the manufacturer’s manufacturer’s site first before going to visit that of the graphics card manufacturer. Indeed, the pilots of the PC seller often take into account other material elements of your computer that the graphics card manufacturer may not know. In my case, I have an Asus laptop.

1. Visit your supplier’s website

Most PC suppliers have a website, and most of these sites have a “support” button that generally includes drivers and other downloadable elements. Here is the Asus page:

2. Enter the model information

Many sites ask you to select a product category, then find your model. Simply follow the instructions and give the site the requested information.

3. Visit the sites of graphics card sellers

You can also visit the Graphics Card Provider sites. The three main ones are NVIDIA, AMD and Intel. Intel offers an assistant who checks the configuration of your PC and recommends the appropriate drivers.
