An update is available on your Mac: but you have to download it and install it to benefit from the news of MacOS Catalina ? It’s tempting, but beware: if you use fairly old applications, they may no longer work with MacOS Catalina. We take stock of the arguments for and against the update.
The news that makes you want to update your Mac
There are many news from MacOS Catalina. But those who could convince you to update your Mac are counted on the fingers of one hand.
Sidecar mode
If you have an iPad, you will probably want to update your Mac. Under MacOS Catalina, you can indeed duplicate the screen of your Mac on your iPad or extend the screen of your Mac on your iPad. All about Sidecar mode.
Apple Arcade
If Apple Arcade interests you, no choice: you have to go to MacOS Catalina to benefit from it. As a reminder, this is a subscription service ($ 5 per month) allowing access to video games. You can play on your Mac, on iPhone (with iOS 13) and on iPad, and share a subscription for the whole family.
The end of iTunes
If you don’t like iTunes, go to MacOS Catalina. The famous Apple software disappears with Catalina. iTunes is actually divided into three applications: Apple Music, Apple Podcasts and Apple TV. Your contents are saved. But the end of iTunes could also encourage you not to update your Mac: many applications, based on the library of iTunes, do not work under MacOS Catalina.
The other Apple applications also benefit from a few new features on Catalina, but the new features remain minor and will not push you to pass on the new version of MacOS. Find the list of novelties of MacOS 10.15 here.
Before updating: Check the list of non-compatible applications
Before updating your Mac, we invite you to perform two actions. The first is to save your Mac with Time Machine. You will be able to go back if, for one reason or another, MacOS Catalina does not suit you.
The second action: Check the list of non-compatible applications with MacOS Catalina. This is the big black point of the update for many users. Apple decided that MacOS Mojave would be the latest version of MacOS that would support 32 -bit applications. These are relatively old applications, so some have not been updated for a long time. The decision should make it possible to modernize the applications available on Mac … but many popular apps will disappear.
Also, the end of iTunes signs the death stop of several applications used by the DJs, which were based on the library of iTunes. If this is your case, it is also advisable to stay on MacOS Mojave, the time to find an alternative solution.
If you use non-compatible applications with MacOS Catalina, your Mac has probably already warned you. If in doubt, you can very easily view the list of non-compatible applications with MacOS Catalina (follow the link to consult the guide). If these applications are important for you, do not install the update !
