Motorola Edge 30 Neo test: a compact and attractive mid -range

Writing note: 3 out of 5

The range of Motorola Edge 30 smartphones has recently reinforced with Ultra, Fusion and Neo models. The last, here tested and the most affordable, has some serious assets to assert.

Presentation

The list of Motorola Edge 30 has extended considerably with the recent Models Fusion, Ultra and Neo. Three devices that aim for different pricing segments, without walking too much on the flowerbeds of the “standard” versions that are the Edge 30, the Edge 30 Lite and the Edge 30 Pro.

Launched at € 399, the Edge 30 NEO aims for a large audience; Its price is positioned at the level of the average basket of the French smartphone. However, he faces serious competition. We obviously think of the Pixel 6A, the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G or the Realme GT Neo 3T. Mobiles a little more expensive, but which offer a very solid experience on a daily basis. At equal price, we also think of the northern OnePlus 2 5G, a little older however.

Ergonomics and design

The design of this Edge 30 Neo is simple, but pleasant, especially in her “Very Peri” dress, the pantone color of the year 2022. But more than by its color, the smartphone is distinguished by its very compact measurements, which make it one of the rare “small” smartphones on the market. It measures 52.9 x 71.2 x 7.8 mm and its weight does not exceed 155 grams, which is very pleasant.

The pimples easily fall under the thumb and it turns out to be pleasant to manipulate. The plastic back has a very soft coating, which reminds of brushed aluminum. A wise choice, which avoids retaining fingerprints.

The relief of the double photo sensor prevents it from using it perfectly flat, as is often the case. A luminous halo surrounds the photo sensors, especially when loading.

The screen occupies more than 87 % of the front facade. The borders are therefore discreet. On the other hand, it does not display Gorilla Glass protection.

It should also be noted that the Motorola Edge 30 NEO displayed only an IP52 certification. It can therefore withstand small splashes, but not much more. The Samsung Galaxy A53 5G and the Pixel 6a benefit for example from better protection (IP67) which makes them tight.

In terms of connectivity, nothing special, the smartphone focusing on a USB-C socket and not offering a mini-jack 3.5 mm socket. We take advantage of course from 5G compatibility, Bluetooth 5.1 (only) and a NFC chip.

Screen

Motorola has accustomed us to deliver good screens, even on affordable models. And the least we can say is that the brand has exceeded this Edge 30 Neo. The smartphone is equipped with a 6.28 -inch OLED slab displaying Full HD+ (1080 x 2400 pixels, 419 ppi) and offering a cooling rate up to 120 Hz. We see the presence of a punch in the center of the upper part, which hosts a photo module dedicated to selfies.

With the adaptive brightness started, the device displays a light peak of 1028 cd/m². An excellent result, especially for a mid -range smartphone, which allows it to stay readable in all situations. In addition, reflectance is a little better controlled than in competition, even if it remains high (41.5 %). The minimum brightness is 3.9 cd/m², which is reasonable for night consultation. Oled obliges, the contrast is infinite and the time of null. The touch delay is 59 ms.

At the box output, the smartphone is configured in “saturated” mode, which is pretty well named its name. We measured the Delta E at 3.5 and the color temperature at 7501 kelvins. The whole is therefore too cold and the screen shoots slightly on the bluish.

Writing note: 5 out of 5

To better take advantage of it, a passage in the “natural” mode is recommended. Thus configured, the Delta E falls to 1.8 and the temperature at 6690 K, much closer to the video standard (6500 K). These values are excellent, and above all very satisfactory on this pricing segment.

Performance

For this model, Motorola opted for a rather modest SoC. It is indeed the Snapdragon 695 5G that we find here coupled with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. A chipset designed for entry -level, which is found for example on the Samsung Galaxy A23 5G and the Oppo Reno 8 Lite.

However, the chip has already shown great capacities when it is well optimized. It is thus possible to juggle between applications and social networks in a fluid way. An experience well supported by the home interface, which is almost to use Android stock.

It also shows good video game abilities. On our test protocol, she was able to display an average of 63 frames per second. It will of course have to make concessions on the heaviest titles, as GENSHIN IMPACT, But the majority of Play Store games can be practiced in good conditions. Heating is contained, which is not always the case with competition. We would of course have liked a slightly more ambitious SoC, but it is clear that it behaves well on a daily basis.

Our performance tests are carried out with aim, the application developed by the company Smartvis.

Photo

On the back, the Motorola Edge 30 NEO has a duo of sensors composed of a 64 Mpxes wide-angle module whose lens opens at F/1.8 and an ultra-wide-angle of 13 Mpx (F/2 , 2). A configuration after all classic, which does not detonate on this pricing segment.

Some almost equivalent price smartphones have nevertheless shown great photo ambitions. This is particularly the case with Pixel 6a, but also the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G. The latter also has fairly similar sensors, which authorize the comparison.

Main module: 64 Mpx, f/1.8

During the day, the Edge 30 NEO delivers a good shot. It will therefore be possible to take beautiful photos in light environments. That of the Samsung is however more detailed, the algorithms of the South Korean which tend to force on micro-contracts. Motorola still displays a much more natural shade than that of the Galaxy A53, which suffers from an aggressive colorimetric treatment.

Edge 30 NEO has much more harm in darkness, and digital noise appears. The level of detail and sharpness falls sharply, while the Samsung smartphone retains better readability thanks to a much softer treatment. Although it remains exploitable, the image of the Motorola has largely emptied of its color, as we can see in the midwives above.

64 megapixel mode

It is possible to force full definition in the application settings. We have isolated an area of identical size on each of the photos. You can see the difference in definition in relation to the standard photo.

At night, there is a slight gain in detail and a slightly finer rendering. It’s rare enough to be stressed. Paradoxically, this is not really the case of day. This mode therefore serves to crop photos more easily, but it is advised to use it sparingly so as not to weigh too much on storage.

Ultra Grand Angle Module: 13 megapixels, f/2.2

In good light conditions, the observation is quite similar to that of the main module. Despite the digital smoothing (see the cover of the book on our photo), the scene is clear and the exhibition well managed. Even with a lower definition (12 megapixels), the bitter seems more advanced on the Galaxy A53, but the general shade is saturated and the management of the hazardous dynamics.

At night, there is no debate. The Motorola sensor cannot recover enough information and an important vagueness fell on the shot, which is almost unusable. Despite the presence of noise, the Galaxy A53 is doing much better. We lose in sharpness and detail, but the right management of the exhibition allows at least to take advantage of each element of the image.

Front and video module

A 32 MP sensor whose objective opens at f/2.4 is housed at the front. He captures 8 MP shots thanks to the pixel-binning, But it is possible to go into full definition. The algorithmic work on the latter is quite heavy. The whole is rather satisfactory, but we expected a little more details. The dynamics are well managed, but the colors, especially those of the skin, seemed too pale. Also be careful not to move too much, because it will be felt on the sharpness.

Entry -level chip requires, the Edge 30 NEO can only film as maximum in full HD at 60 i/s. The rendering is however convincing, even if we see here a little too pale shades.

Autonomy

The smartphone is equipped with a 4020 mAh battery compatible with fast recharging at 68 W. This accumulator is little smaller than the average, which is not surprising given the very contained weight of the smartphone. On our target test protocol, it has nevertheless managed to hold 3 h 49 min.

An honorable result, which allows him to hold the day without incident, provided that he does not play too much. On our comparison, only the realme gt neo 3T is really taking off compared to the others.

The load block provided in the box allows you to redo the refuel very quickly. It only took us 43 minutes. Welcome technology, which allows you to connect your smartphone for a few minutes to quickly recover energy. The icing on the cake, it is even compatible with wireless charging (only 5 W only).

It is therefore better than the Pixel 6A and Galaxy A53, which seem to be trained on this subject. Realme GT Neo 3T remains unbeatable with only 34 minutes.

Our battery tests are automated by target, the application developed by the company Smartvis.

The results obtained with target come from measurements made in real conditions of use (calls, SMS, videos, application launch, web navigation, etc.).

Sustainability

Our sustainability score makes it possible to determine the lasting aspect of the smartphone as much for the consumer as for the environment. It is based on the repairability index, sustainability criteria (protection index, standard connectors, warranty duration and updates. ) and an assessment of CSR policies (corporate social responsibility). You will find all the details of the analysis in our article presenting the sustainability score.

The Motorola Edge 30 Neo runs on Android 12, the latest version of the operating system. The manufacturer’s interface is particularly close to the version stock, and is content to offer the applications of the Google suite. Only the “Motorcycle” application breaks this simplicity: it allows you to configure control gestures (three finger screenshot, shake the smartphone to activate the torch lamp. ) or display options. The whole has the merit of being particularly simple and of integrating all the functions specific to Android 12, such as the management of notifications and options dedicated to privacy.

How does notation work ?

On paper, the Motorola Edge 30 Neo is far from standing out from other devices in its pricing segment. However, it is an interesting proposal on the mid -range market. Small and light, the smartphone benefits from a good quality OLED screen, a reasonable autonomy and knows how to take advantage of its so modest SoC. Without reaching the summits of certain competitors in photo, he delivers very correct clichés during the day, even if it spoils when the light lacks. He therefore has real assets to seduce those looking for a compact mobile at affordable prices.

Sometimes very disappointing on November 11, 2022

I have been a motorcycle user from the first generation motorcycle G. And I followed the models to the g8 power motorcycle. With two infidelities for the Honor 20 Pro and recently the Xiaomi 11T. In the price range of Edge 30 Neo, it is really not the best choice. I took advantage of a launch offer with an ODR and a free product offered by the brand. Which makes this experience less painful. The mobile is really not free from small problems that add it really not pleasant: hugs in the speaker during calls with certain correspondents when their volume is sometimes too high (not all, reproducible, does not arrive with competing mobiles), another recurring concern at Moto is the quality of the photo. But there, even with the photo optimization service, the shots of the low light selfie camera are awful. Even for visio. Where competitors shoot light, with a smooth image, the Edge 30 Neo draws noise and it’s ugly. And then these small dysfunctions such as the locking screen which sometimes remains ghost and reappears in transparency when trying to unfold the notifications. Positive aspects: motorcycle experience. The only bloatware present is Facebook but it can be uninstalled. Sound quality with dolby. The contained size of the smartphone. The super fast load. With its Edge range made up of five models, Motorola wishes to offer terminals able to cover the needs of each in all ranges. Positioned at the entry level by Motorola in its Edge series, the Edge 30 Neo, sold at less than 400 euros, defends itself honorably, by offering in particular a very good screen screen.

Technical and design sheet

Launched at 399 euros last September, the Motorola Edge 30 Neo saw, in the space of a few months, its price drop. To offer this terminal, now sold around 349 euros, Motorola nevertheless had to make certain choices for her specifications to respect the budget.

Motorola Edge 30 Neo - Technical characteristics

Exit noble materials reserved for devices Premium What are glass and aluminum, Edge 30 Neo is dressed in a plastic shell. This has a satin finish which reflects the light and gives an impression of grain on the back of the device. On this rear facade, in the middle, sits the brand’s logo, while the two camera modules that equip the smartphone are grafted within a block that protrudes slightly, making the device wobbly when laid flat. Motorola offers her Edge 30 Neo in four colors: Ice Palace (Gray), Black Onyx (Black), Aqua Foam (Green) and Very Peri (Violet), the model we had in our hands.

Motorola Edge 30 Neo

With its 6.28 -inch poled slab, the Motorola Edge 30 NEO is distinguished from the competition by its rather compact size, and its featherweight of only 152 grams. It is animated by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695, an eight -hearted processor clocked at 2.2 GHz, and a graphic chip Qualcomm Adreno 619, all being supported by 8 GB of RAM. It is powered by Android 12 and has 128 GB of internal storage space. The photo part is ensured by a camera block made up of two modules. A main module of 64 megapixels incorporating an OIS mechanical stabilization system, and an ultra-wide-angle module of 13 megapixels that can make macro photo. The front camera module allows you to capture selfies in 32 megapixels. The device, obviously compatible with 5G, has a small battery of 4,020 mAh, which will not allow it to miracle in terms of autonomy.

The screen

Despite a contained price, the slab that equips this model is very good. It covers 84.7% of the total surface area of the front of the device and offers a very good cooling rate of up to 120 Hz. By default, Motorola The rate of refreshment of the screen is managed in an adaptive manner and varies between 60 and 120 Hz depending on your activity. You can configure the device so that it only uses a refresh rate of 60 Hz or 120 Hz. The first choice will allow you to extend the autonomy to the detriment of the fluidity of the display, while the second choice will offer a more fluid, but more energy -consuming display, it may cannibalize the autonomy.

Motorola Edge 30 Neo screen

The screen of this EDGE 30 NEO, of the Poled type, offers infinite contrast with exceptional brightness at this price. We have indeed been able to measure an average brightness with 1,012 cd/m2, which allows it to tease high -end devices: he thus manages to classify between the iPhone 13 pro Max and the iPhone 14 pro Max (excluding peak HDR brightness) ! In other words, you should be able to see very distinctly what is displayed on the screen, even in full sun.

Colorimetry and color fidelity, on the other hand, are correct. With a Delta E 2000 measured at 4.86, the Motorola Edge 30 Neo is just above the average of the smartphones in this range. Although less flattering, the “natural colors” mode will be preferred to make sure you have the most loyal colors possible. By opting for this setting in the device settings, we were able to obtain a measure at 0.86.

Performance

On the performance side, the Motorola Edge 30 NEO is average of the devices sold at the same price. Slightly less good than the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G on Antutu 9, Motorola’s smartphone is getting better than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 PRO 5G and that the Honor Magic 4 Lite 5G, two terminals that embark the same Snapdragon 695 chip 695. The scores obtained with Geekbench confirm this observation. The Motorola terminal, like those of Xiaomi and Honor who embark the same chip, does not miracle. He remains, like his two competitors, lagging behind, far behind the Google Pixel 6A, which can now be found below 400 euros at some merchants.

Geekbench-le-Motorola-Edge-30-Neo-Face-la-Concue

The graphic performance of the Motorola Edge 30 NEO, provided by the Adreno 619, of Qualcomm, once again offer no surprises. Like the majority of devices sold around 400 euros, this model does not make a miracle. It remains behind the Galaxy A53, from Samsung, which is barely better, and lines up with the scores of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 P 5G and the Honor Magic 4.
The only exception to the rule in this price range, Pixel 6a, from Google, which is very, very far ahead. You will understand, if the Motorola Edge 30 NEO fulfills the most common tasks without problem, you should not hope to play demanding games or carry out resource -like tasks such as video editing.

GPU-LE-MOTOROLO-EDGE-30-NEO-FACE-LA-CONCEMENT

Autonomy and load speed

With its “small” battery of only 4,020 mAh, the Motorola Edge 30 NEO does not have to be ashamed. On the contrary. Subject to our versatile autonomy test, which simulates a classic use of the smartphone until it goes out, the Motorola terminal held almost 3 p.m. A completely acceptable score with regard to the capacity of the battery which feeds it. This allows him to be among the devices taking advantage of the most important autonomy in this range. It is almost an hour more than the Samsung Galaxy A53 whose battery has a much higher capacity, of almost 1,000 mAh. The observation is similar with our video autonomy test which places it at the top of the most enduring devices in this price range.

Motorola Edge 30 NEO Autonomy

By opting for a 4,020 mAh battery, Motorola chose a balanced compromise. Because although it has a capacity lower than the average, it allows the Edge 30 NEO to reach an autonomy which has absolutely nothing to envy to smartphones in this price section. Above all, this allows him to enthron the fastest smartphones at charging time. It only took us 44 short minutes to completely recharge your battery. A speed that we owe on the one hand to its capacity contained, and on the other hand to the 68 W charger delivered with the device.

Photo

For the photo, the Motorola Edge 30 Neo relies on two camera modules. The main angle module of 64 megapixels at f/1.8 With mechanical stabilization, and a secondary module, ultra large-angle, from 13 megapixels to f/2.2.

In high brightness, the result is correct, without however upsetting a Google Pixel 6A sold a few euros more expensive. On our testing sight, the color rendering seems a little dull despite a good exposure. However, the image lacks details and certain areas seem to be very rough.

On the left, a photo of the Motorola Edge 30 Neo in high light. On the right, a photo of the Google Pixel 6A under the same conditions.

Do not wait for a miracle in low light, the observation is identical. The photo seems underexposed, it offers a color rendering which remains very bland and further reduces the level of detail of the image. You will understand, the Motorola Edge 30 Neo is not particularly cut for the photo. If you are looking for a good photo terminal in this price range, we can only advise you to go to the Google Pixel 6a.

On the left, a photo of the Motorola Edge 30 NEO in low light. On the right, a photo of the Google Pixel 6A under the same conditions.

Interface

If you don’t like overly busy overlay, the Motorola Edge 30 Neo should fully satisfy you. The device is indeed animated by Android 12 with the Maison My UX overlay whose main asset is its lightness. The user experience is very close to what an Android version “Stock” offers, however, with a few small, Motorola specificities.

It is for example possible to quickly turn on the camera flash by simply shaking the smartphone, or even making a screenshot by pressing it using three fingers.

The verdict of the test

Motorola Edge 30 Neo

With a tight price, the Motorola Edge 30 Neo is rather a good surprise. To succeed in this entry -level model, Motorola obviously had to make some concessions. However, the manufacturer manages to offer a smartphone equipped with a very high quality screen here. Despite a smaller battery than the average in competitors in this pricing segment, it manages to offer a very correct versatile autonomy and will make it possible to perform the most common tasks without incident.

However, do not count on its SoC which deserves a little more fishing, to run demanding applications. The Motorola Edge 30 Neo will nevertheless get out of classic uses such as surfing and video streaming. Only real regret, the quality of the photos that is acceptable, but will not allow miracle.
