Apple MacBook Air 2020

The MacBook Air is one of those products that created a whole market in its wake, that of ultrabooks. Loss of speed after having stubbornly impose a defective keyboard on all its laptops, Apple returns in 2020 with a new much stronger copy on paper.

This is an opportunity for me to test my first MacBook. While waiting for a full test, here is my first impressions of the MacBook Air 2020 first.

A particularly successful Apple design

The MacBook Air is a MacBook. By saying this, we have already described most of its design so much Apple here only consolidates its achievements without trying to reinvent its recipe.

You will therefore not find a detachable or touch screen keyboard here, but a PC built in a single room of gray aluminum, made up of 100 % recycled aluminum, a keyboard, a large trackpad and a screen surrounded by …

If we linger a little more on the design there are still some elements to mention. First, and it may seem to be in the order of detail, but it precisely shows the importance that brand engineers can lend: it is possible to open the machine with a single finger. The notch under the trackpad, as well as the balance of the weight between the base of the PC and the screen allows this.

The screen let’s talk about it, the borders are still much thicker than what is found today on PCs same mid-range. Apple has made progress on this subject during the recent years, but we are far from the account.

The design of the MacBook Air is therefore not particularly innovative, but we can at least say that it is here perfectly mastered. The PC is easily manipulated, it is light, and its design does not get in the user.

So this magic keyboard ?

The Magic Keyboard is one of the big news in this MacBook Air. Some have already discovered it on the 16 -inch MacBook Pro which inaugurated it a few months ago.

First MacBook obliges, difficult for me to adapt to the disposal of the keys offered by the Mac. As often, Apple does things in its corner and therefore does not have the same keyboard as PCs under Windows, however overwhelming market. If the keyboard is Azerty, all other keys are arranged differently or do not work as on a Windows keyboard.

It remains a question of habit, and we will not really keep it rigor. Underline it simply makes it possible to inform those who do not know Apple PCs.

The most important thing is that Apple seems, in the early hours when I was able to try it, offer a quality keyboard. The keys respond well, but do not make too much noise, with a keyboard however quite fine. The icing on the cake, the backlight is still there.

We can note that the keyboard does not take the whole width of the machine, but the engineers have used all the space at their disposal and we therefore have two speakers surrounding the keyboard.

The keyboard also incorporates Touch ID, the imprint sensor developed by Apple which allows biometric identification and payment with Apple Pay. The button is a bit small, but I have not encountered any concern for identification at the moment.

Inconsistent connectors

Those who follow the news of smartphones already know this, Apple made a lot of talk in 2016 when the brand had the ” courage “Abandon the 3.5 mm jack port on its iPhone 7. We are therefore a little distraught, but relieved, to see the audio standard always having its place on the MacBook Air.

Too bad for fans of the Apple ecosystem who may have Lightning headphones. They will not have the right to connect their Apple headphones to an Apple MacBook.

If they have an iPhone 11, they can at least connect or recharge their iPhone directly on one of the MacBook’s USB-C ports. Apple makes the deadlock on any classic USB-A port on its machine, and it will therefore be necessary adapters for most peripherals.

Let us underline the compatibility of the two USB-C ports with the best technology available to date, the Thunderbolt 3 to 40 Gbit/s.

New Intel processor

Apple always takes advantage of generation changes at Intel to renew its range of machines. Here the MacBook Air 2020 therefore hosts 10th generation Intel Core processors.

On our model we have the right to an Intel Core i5 1030ng7, Ice Lake architecture, engraved in 10 Nm and composed of 4 hearts (8 threads) clocked from 1.10 GHz to 3.5 GHz in turbo mode.

The letter N in the name of the processor indicates that this is a model only marketed by Intel for Apple, inaccessible to other computer manufacturers. The processor frequency is slightly higher than the classic Core i5 1030g7 model (from 0.8 GHz to 3.2 GHz) at the cost of a thermal dissipation which goes from 9W to 10W at Apple.

One of the interests of the Ice Lake platform in Intel is the integration of new technologies such as Wi-Fi 6. Unfortunately, Apple ignores this network standard and remains on a Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5 combo.0, who has nevertheless proven himself. Too bad, because the competitors almost all go to Wi-Fi 6. Again an incoherent choice for Apple since the iPhone also incorporates this new network standard.

A price contained for Apple

The MacBook Air is launched from 1200 euros in France for configuration with an Intel Core i3, 8 GB LPDDR4X and 256 GB of storage processor of storage.
