Google has just announced an important change in the rhythm of publication of updates to its web browser. To provide more security to its users, Chrome must be updated each week to apply safety fixes.

We can never say it enough, maintaining your web browser up to date is essential for your online safety. Google knows it perfectly and already has the habit of publishing updates incorporating its latest security fixes between two major versions of its browser. The Mountain View company now intends to go further by allowing you to get the chrome safety updates even faster. She has just announced that from Chrome 116 (the next major browser update), she will now publish safety fixes for the stable version of Chrome every week.

Reduce the duration between two corrective patches to strengthen safety

Chrome being based on the Open Source Chromium project, the source code of the browser, the safety fixes and many changes submitted by the community are very easily accessible online. If this is very beneficial to develop the browser quickly, Google fears that malicious actors use these many data accessible online to find new safety faults that they could use to trap users. Because the corrections submitted by the community are not immediately applied in the stable version of Chrome. After their publication in the Chromium public repository, open to the public, they are tested and verified by Google teams. There is therefore a certain delay between the moment when the fixes are subject, and the moment when they are applied, and thus published in the stable version of the browser.

This is the main reason why the Mountain View firm wishes to modify the publication pace of chrome safety fixes. By publishing the latest safety fixes of your browser faster, the risk of seeing the fixes exploited for unscathed against stable versions of chrome that have not yet taken advantage of the fixes are reduced.

Google recalls that from Chrome 77, released in 2020, it has already managed to reduce the duration between the moment when a fix and submitted and the moment when it is applied in Chrome. If before Chrome 77 this gap was approximately 35 days, it has since been reduced to a fortnight. By now deciding to publish Chrome’s latest safety fixes every week, Google hopes to reduce this duration to 3.5 days. What radically reduce the chances for hackers potential to develop and set up an attack exploiting the faults being corrected.

For your safety, stay on the lookout for update notifications

With a more sustained safety update rate, so you may see notifications more frequently displayed to download and install updates for Chrome.

Chrome Safety Update

“If an update is available, please update it immediately each time ! »» advises Google in its blog note.

And for those who fear losing their work in progress because of the update, the Mountain View firm wants to be reassuring. She explains that the chrome update process, although requires a restart of the browser, retains all the tabs open in the same state. These are indeed automatically saved in normal navigation, which is not the case however if you use private navigation. In addition, you will be able to delay the application of an update, Google offering a button not now to allow you to apply the update at the next start of chrome.

Finally, Google reminds all of the purpose useful that these changes only apply to its Chrome browser and that it “does not control the rate of update of other chromium browsers”.
