End of self-service electric scooters in Paris: why you should not delete applications

On September 1, 2023, self-service electric scooters operated by Lime, Dott and Tier, left Paris, after five years of good and loyal service.

This is the official end of self-service electric scooters in Paris. Lime, Dott and Tier are forced to withdraw their devices from the capital. They had won in July 2020 the call for tenders for the Paris town hall, which was looking at the time to better supervise a market in full swing: a dozen operators operated in the city of light, in a relative anarchy.

When do the self-service electric scooters leave Paris ?

Lime, Dott and Tier electric scooters were gradually withdrawn from Paris during the month of July and August 2023. The fateful date when no more device should be put into circulation is September 1. This deadline marks the official end of self-service electric scooters in Paris.

In total, it is a park of 15,000 machines – 5,000 per operator – which disappears from the city of light. Tier started its withdrawal process on August 14, files on August 1 and Dott even earlier, from July when 3000 of its two-wheelers were removed. On September 1, you are no longer supposed to cross the slightest self-service scooter.

Why are the self-service electric scooters withdrawn ?

Indeed, only 8 % of voters moved to vote, for 92 % abstention. Which is absolutely not representative. Note also that the proxies were prohibited, that no electronic vote was put in place, and that this citizen consultation was organized on the day of the Paris marathon.

Why the town hall organized this advisory vote ?

For Anne Hidalgo teams, self-service electric scooters were subject to global dissatisfaction. In question: the bad driving of users and users, but also the number of obivities observed (traffic on sidewalks, two users per scooter, red light not respected, sometimes chaotic parking).

In November 2022, the operators attempted to improve their service to stick to the requests and requirements of the town hall: prohibition for minors, addition of a license plate, new sidewall detection technology.

Are personal electric scooters concerned ?

No, personal electric scooters are not affected by this new rule. You can without any problem buy an electric scooter in store or online, and circulate on cycle paths and other Paris infrastructure. Only self-service vehicles are affected.

Yes, Lime, Dott and Tier applications are always useful and topical, and not just a little. It is indeed possible to rent self-service electric bikes on these applications. Nothing changes on the interface, apart from the fact that the electric scooters have disappeared.

That will become the electric scooters of the three operators ?

Finally, at Dott, Rome, Bordeaux, Belgian cities or Tel Aviv, will be the beneficiaries, after a small check-up and some repairs if necessary. Clearly: none of the Parisian fleets is lost. They are just redispatched according to the needs and strategies of each brand.

Note that Paris represented 15 % of operators’ turnover: their withdrawal is therefore a considerable shortfall.

That will become the 2,500 parking zones normally dedicated to electric scooters ?

The 2,500 parking zones initially dedicated to electric scooters are not abandoned. David Belliard, assistant (Europe Ecologie-les Verts) at the town hall, in charge of mobility and roads, said he wanted to make them parking spaces for bikes, with or without Arceaux.

We must therefore expect more public parking lots to attach our bikes in the street, or more locations to park a self-service electric bike.

What are the alternatives to self-service electric scooters ?

For the 400,000 unique users monthly for electric self-service electric scooters, several alternatives are available to them: self-service electric bikes, as already mentioned above, are part of the travel solutions to circulate easily and quickly in Paris.

The mechanical or electric velib is a possibility, as is the long -term rental of electric bikes -dance, swapfiets, motto, Véligo, Red -Will -, or even the purchase of a personal electric scooter if you are keen on this mode transport. The acquisition of a VAE is not to be excluded either.
