Disney launches its subscription with advertisements and increases its prices

Unlike the Netflix advertising subscription, Disney+ does not make an “at a discount” offer. For the first time, Disney lost subscribers

It’s the surprise that’s not happy. The Disney + streaming service dedicated to original Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and Star, Go increase.

Concretely, the current offer evolves (and becomes more expensive) and two others are added to the current subscription. This new pricing grid will come into force from the 1ᵉʳ November 2023 In France.

What changes ?

So far, Disney + offered A single subscription in France at 8.99 euros per month. This allowed access to the service on Four screens simultaneously and in 4K UHD with HDR.

With this new pricing grid, it will now be necessary to pay 11.99 euros To benefit from these same advantages, three euros more per month. This subscription will be renamed “Premium”.

And if you are already subscribed to Disney + and you do not realize no manipulations, you will automatically switch to the Premium subscription from December 6, 2023. Over a year, this change represents 36 euros more per year.

Two new subscriptions

But that’s not all. Two new subscriptions appear on Disney +. The first, at the rate of the old subscription, or 8.99 euros per month, but limited to Full HD 1080p and only two screens.

A Disney+ Basic more expensive, but more generous than Netflix

This is the big day for Disney+ which has just launched its “basic” offer across the Atlantic at $ 7.99 per month, a dollar more than the offer with Netflix advertising.

For this price, subscribers have access to the entire catalog, which is not the case for its competitor. The programs will be interspersed with advertisements which can last 15 seconds, 30 seconds or 45 seconds, within a limit of four minutes per hour. The company also specifies that programs dedicated to kindergarten children will not have an advertisement.

In a press release, Michael Paull, president of Disney “Direct to Consumer”, explains the issue of this new offer with advertising:

Thanks to this new offer funded by advertising, we are able to provide greater flexibility to consumers to enjoy the full extent and depth of the incredible way of telling stories of The Walt Disney Company. »»

The stake for Disney is obviously to accry its profitability by taking market share in Netflix, while concerning its current subscribers. To achieve this, Disney will have to finance and create quality content that people want to watch.

A price that increases for the offer without advertising of Disney+

But do not be mistaken, behind this new offer simply hides an increase in the price of the subscription without advertising. The latter, which was $ 7.99, now increases to $ 10.99 per month. Consumers are therefore not obliged to pay more, but will have to concession to see advertisements between their programs.

According to the Kantar Study and Brand Conseil Institute, 23 % of American subscribers are ready to go to the subscription with advertisements so as not to pay more, but having degraded experience. This represents 46 million people out of the 164 million subscribers in Disney+ in the United States.

Outside the Atlantic, Disney also takes the opportunity to review its group offers including Hulu and ESPN+ for $ 12.99 per month, or $ 19.99 per month to be able to download the content offline and watch them later.
