Antoine Ranc Painter Montpellier. Painting under Louis XIV in Languedoc

“At the beginning of the 17th century, Languedoc experienced a relative period of serenity. Montpellier, shaken by the wars of religion remains dominated by a Protestant elite and opposes in this in Toulouse, whose parliament proudly defends its Catholicity. The city of Bas-Languedoc is again destabilized by religious conflicts during the “Grand Harlan” 1 in December 1621, followed by the siege of King Louis XIII in 1622. Although harmful for the first decades of the century, these wars of religion created new opportunities for painters and art workers; They participate in the reconstruction of the city by making the many decorations of the religious buildings. Montpellier regains its dynamism thanks to its powerful institutions. The Provincial Council for Languedoc States regularly meets in the city, welcoming the notables that compose it. Unlike Toulouse, which houses the Parliament attached to justice, Montpellier holds several tax administrations such as the Court of Auditors, Aydes and Finances as well as the treasurers of France. These establishments work thanks to the charges purchased by the big bourgeois and notables of the city. They will be the main sponsors of artists.””

This is the original tightness of the Tressan book until 1914: the birth of a wine village in Languedoc (Tressan, association “Au Fil de l’Histoire”, 2004, 216 p.)). It is a village monograph, which was made from the rereading of a master’s thesis, supported in 1996 (Montpellier III), a master’s thesis, supported in 2000 (Montpellier III) . The computerized examination of the Compixs of 1597, 1770 and the cadastres of 1826 and 1913 forms the base of this work. As a ruralist historian, I had rarely found my account in existing Languedoc monographs. The genre turns out to be very uneven, because lovers of history, even enlightened, are not professionals of the context, as well as the mastery of the definitions of the words of the words. It is often read there, despite many efforts produced by their author, many over-interpretations and counter-sensations, in the midst of self-centered reflections in the treated town. It is for these reasons that I had tried the exercise. And also because being born and having grown up in Tressan (Hérault), I wanted to please the inhabitants of my village, to which I love so much today, return. For several years, the 400 initial volumes have been exhausted and it seems useful to offer a downloadable version of this work. The many photographs and illustrations that dot the book are unfortunately absent from the following pages.
