Obtain the latest Apple software updates

If your iPhone or iPad does not update

To update your iPhone or iPad, you need a compatible device, internet connection and sufficient storage space. It is also useful to leave your device connected to a power source.

If you can’t install iOS 16 or iPados 16.1 on your iPhone or iPad

• Your device is not compatible with the latest software.
• The storage space available on your device is not enough.
• Downloading the update takes a long time.
• Your device cannot connect to the update server.
• The update process does not succeed.

If your device is not compatible with the new software

If you do not see the update option to the new software (for example, iOS 16 or iPados 16) when available, your device may not be compatible with the latest version.

1. Identify your iPhone or iPad model.
2. Check if your iPhone or iPad model is on the list of devices compatible with the latest version of iOS or iPados.
3. Update to the latest version of iOS or iPados available.

If your iPhone or iPad is compatible, but does not update, try the steps below.

If the available space is insufficient for the update

If the available space does not download or install an update, the software on your device will try to release them. Only apps data that can be downloaded again are deleted. None of your data is deleted or moved. If the space available on your device is still insufficient, then you can use your computer to update your device.

If you cannot connect your device to your computer, free up space by deleting the content and the apps you no longer need. Access Settings> General> Storage [device name].
