Difficult for a little expert eye to make the difference between an ultra galaxy s22 and an ultra galaxy s23. Barely different dimensions can be noted (163.4 x 78.1 x 8.9 mm for the Ultra S23 and 163.3 x 77.9 x 8.9 mm for S22 Ultra), and some grams won on the balance. Samsung’s latest addition weighs 234 grams, 6 g more than its elder, which does anyway of the two terminals of the aircraft intended for lovers of very large smartphones.

The two generations offer a 6.8 -inch screen (logically, that of S22 Ultra occupies a percentage barely higher than that of the Ultra S23), whose protection is ensured by a glass Gorilla Glass Victus+ for the 2022 model, and by Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for his successor. This screen benefits from a small novelty brought by Samsung: it is less curved on the ultra S23 than on the Ultra S22, in order to improve its grip.

If we except these elements, the two models are rigorously identical. Vitreous back, IP68 waterproofing certification, E-SIM compatibility and support of the S Pen stylus are therefore there, as well as that of 5G. We note all the same that in the radius of connectivity, the 6th WiFi remains the game, but that standard 5.3 succeeds the 5.2 on the Bluetooth field.

In both cases, we are entitled here to smartphones with impeccable finishes, particularly complete thanks to the integration of a stylus, but also among the most massive on the market. Equality is almost perfect between the two generations of terminals, the ultra S22, however, benefiting from a lower weight.

Samsung produces its own screens and deploys all its control over its galaxy s. Whether it is S22 Ultra or the Ultra S23, the South Korean opts for a Dynamic AMOLED 2X slab at the cooling rate varying from 1 to 120 Hz, thanks to LTPO technology. This screen displays 1440 x 3088 pixels on a 6.8 -inch diagonal, unchanged from one generation of smartphones to the other. Note also that the latter support the S Pen stylus, also unchanged.

It must be admitted that the differences are tenuous between the two tiles. We noted a maximum brightness of 1259 cd/m² on the S22 Ultra, and 1377 cd/m² on its successor, which also has the merit of offering a lower minimum brightness (1.8 cd/m² on the S22 Ultra, 0.9 cd/m² on the ultra S23). For the rest, the two devices are equal, with a similar tactile delay, a very comparable reflectance (around 45 %), and a practically identical calibration. As a box outlet, the color temperature noted under our probes is 7,197 k on the Ultra S22, and 7199 k on its heir, with a 4.5 delta e for the first and 4.6 for the second. It is necessary, on each of the two smartphones, opt for the “natural” display to obtain a fairer temperature, and therefore less cold tones, to just over 6700 k on each of the two terminals. The variations between the two smartphones are particularly tenuous. But thanks to its slightly higher brightness, the Galaxy S23 Ultra wins on the wire this handle could not be tight.

If it is a change to remember and which distinguishes the ultra galaxy S23 from the Galaxy S22 Ultra, it is the chip that animates the smartphone. It is associated with a ram ufs 4.0, replacing the UFS 3.1 of 2022, up to 8 to 12 GB depending on the versions.

The “For Galaxy” chip does not bring a significant gain on the multitasking part, almost similar on the two smartphones, and we can no longer fluid. On the other hand, the graphic part greatly benefits from this new chipset. The Galaxy S23 Ultra won this match very far, being able to display an average of 125 frames per second, where its predecessor capped at. 52 I/S. And, icing on the cake, the resulting heating is contained. Our performance tests are carried out with aim, the application developed by the company Smartvis.

If we compare the Galaxy S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra, we first note that a large part of their photo equipment is common. Their ultra-wide-angle module relies on a 12 megapixel sensor (Optical F/2.2), and their 3X (F/2.4) and 10x (F/4.9) telephoto lenses complete 10 megapixel sensors each. But the difference is played on their main sensor: when that of S22 Ultra displays 108 megapixels, the ISOCELL HP2 of the Galaxy S23 Ultra rises to 200 megapixels. We note that the treatment has softened between the two generations of smartphones, which manifests in particular on the night images carried out using the S23 Ultra. Samsung’s latest addition offers often more successful results in low light, but struggles more than its elder on diurnal images at the ultra-angle. The bitter is slightly less satisfactory when you call on the telephoto lens (3x), but overall, the ultra S23 is slightly better than its elder. Add to this to a 200 megapixel mode, which our rating does not take into account, and which adds to the potential of the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and S23 ultra are two excellent smartphones, capable of seducing demanding users. Very similar on most of the points, they however move away on the ground graphic performance, which play in favor of the latest Born of the Korean manufacturer. This is also distinguished in terms of autonomy, and photo, supported by a main sensor of 200 megapixels with an interesting potential. These are therefore the three elements that tip the scale in favor of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, either for users of the Ultra S22 left for these same reasons, or, more logically, for those who seek a successor to an old galaxy Note.
