Micro-LED televisions from 50 to 140 inches, a first for Samsung, micro-LED TV: we will have to wait long for affordable models

Micro LED TV

Marketed for individuals since 2021 with models of 99 and 110 inch in delusional prices (more than 1,000 euros per thumb), the micro-LED could be accessible in 2023 at more attractive rates. However, for the time being, we do not know if the price in the thumb will be revised down this year, something possible, however, since Samsung Display uses a new manufacturing process on TFT substrate to reduce costs and increase its Production capacities.

Micro-LED televisions from 50 to 140 inches, a first for Samsung

Samsung arrives at these 2023 with two new cuts for its micro-LED slabs: 50 and 63 inches, bringing seven the number of diagonals present in the catalog of the Korean giant, counting those revealed during the IFA of Berlin.

A significant progress to bring down the entry ticket from this technology ?

One leap forward or one more announcement ?

Each year since 2018, Samsung is responsible for its micro-LED technology. Much awaited by technophiles, the latter intends to surpass, by far, existing display technologies on the TV market, in particular the OLED.

As a reminder, the micro-LED uses tiny diodes the size of a micrometer to operate and form a pixel. Like the OLED, these diodes are self -emission, which means that they are able to produce their own light. The big difference lies in the fact that these are made up of inorganic materials, mainly gallium nitride. The technological advance is immense, because a micro-LED display would be able to rise very high in brightness, to display absolute blacks, and above all, to enjoy a very long lifespan due to the materials used.

TV Microled: We will have to wait a long time for affordable models

Microled screen technology, ultimate in terms of display quality, costs extremely expensive. If you hoped for a quick price drop to get an affordable model, you may be disappointed.

Micro LED TV

OLED, QLED or LCD screens, it necessarily speaks to you, they equip almost all our devices, from the watch connected to the TV, including the smartphone. And Microled screens then ? It’s a little more confidential, when it does not date from yesterday. Microled screen technology was unveiled in 2017 already. Technically, they are made up of thousands of microscopic LEDs. They are the ones that form the pixels, with whom we find a red LED, a green LED and a blue LED.

This provision ensures a Excellent colorimetry, but not only. A Microled screen is extremely bright, up to 10 times more than its OLED equivalent. Result, a perfect image quality even with the sun’s rays that type on the screen. Technology also allows thinner and less costly screens. There is only one major problem: the price. Make a microled screen is very expensive. Last year, Samsung announced that its cheapest Microled TVs would start at € 70,000.

The price of Microled TV should drop in 4 years, without becoming affordable

Any hope of one day seeing an affordable microled TV is not lost, well almost almost. OMDIA analysis firm says that In 4 years, the price of medium -sized microled screens will drop by 25 % approximately. By average size, the firm hears Between 10.1 and 14.6 inches. For example, a 10.1 -inch microled slab costs $ 5,800 today. In 2027, it will cost $ 1277. The decline is certainly significant, but it only concerns reduced sizes. Enough to equip a tablet or a laptop for example, for a price that would still remain high.

By applying the same formula to televisions, the substantial economy does not make the models accessible to all budgets. A Samsung Microled TV at $ 70,000 would see its price drop to “only” $ 52,500 in 4 years. It will therefore probably be necessary to wait after 2030 to get a screen with this technology at a reasonable price.
