IPhone 12 PRO: a pro camera that also makes phone 5g

At the rear take place three photo modules: wide angle 7 elements (12 megapixels, ƒ/1.6), Ultra Grand Angle 5 elements (12 megapixels, ƒ2,4) and telephoto 6 elements (12 megapixels ƒ/2.0 on the pro, ƒ/2.2 on the pro max). The telephoto lens offers an X2 optical zoom with an X4 amplitude and X10 digital zoom on the pro, while the pro max in offer more: X2 optical zoom, x5 amplitude and x12 digital zoom. The front optical zoom is also different from one model to another: x2 on the pro, x2.5 on the pro max. The wide angle captures 27% more light, and improves shots in low lighting by 87%.

Behind the three objectives, little change. Each module has a 12 -megapixel photo sensor. We distinguish a telephoto lens (50 mm equivalent) opening at f/2.4; An ultra-angle module (13 mm) opening at f/2.0, and a brighter Grand-Angle (26 mm) module: f/1.6, against f/1.8 for the iPhone 11 Pro. He also incorporates a new lens, a total of seven, against six for his elder. Not a big news. Ah, yes, one anyway: the iPhone 12 Pro is equipped with a Lidar sensor.

A sensor as on autonomous cars

Lidar ? This is the name of these sensors embedded by autonomous vehicles. He calculates at very high speed the journey time of a radius of light between his emission and his return once reflected on an object. Apple claims here a speed multiplied by six compared to that of the Tof (Time of Light) sensor of the iPhone 11 Pro.

Portrait mode in low light offers good results

Consequence: a much more reactive autofocus for subjects located more than five meters. If the effect of this Lidar is difficult to grasp in daylight, this increased performance is especially verified in low light where the iPhone 12 Pro is indeed more reactive at the time of the focus.

Improved night photos

At night, precisely. Apple is strong to improve the quality of the shots of its 12 pro in difficult light conditions. The new Bionic A14 processor shoulders in its image management with, on arrival, a little brighter photos, but also slightly more detailed, that it is now possible to take in ultra-angle. Video noise (small pixels that often invite themselves in a night photo) does not disappear, but we notice it much less.

Always the Waouh effect in full light

By day, the “waouh” effect remains guaranteed on invoice. In full light, and what is more in full sun, the iPhone 12 Pro makes a copy without false note.

Bright colors but which remain natural

The photos are extremely detailed. The colorimetry is perfectly respected, with bright but natural colors.

For its part, the management of the lights may seem a little more chaotic in the clearest parts of an image where the 12 pro seems to be still difficult to treat the big deviations of brightness. Typical example: a cloudy sky of which certain areas may seem overexposed, as in the photo below.

Light management can sometimes be complex

As for the portrait mode, its results are excellent. The cat serving us as a guinea pig for our tests still does not come back from the detail of its peeling in the image ..

Infinity of details in the

Optical, ultra-angle zoom: depending on the desired photo, both are of a nice contribution. Our macro -type close -up tests are successful, but less precise than with the champion in the matter: Find X II Pro of Oppo.

It should be noted that Apple should soon introduce a “pro raw” mode on its iPhone 12 pro. We do not know much yet, but if its arrival is confirmed, this mode should in particular increase the possibilities of post-processing of its views.

At the front, the photo module remains unchanged from the iPhone X. Or a camera with 12 megapixel sensor. The Bionic A14 chip is supposedly coming to reinforce night selfies. No miracle: our photos remain of very limited quality in the darkness, a sometimes excessive smoothing coming to compensate for the lack of details in the image.

Night selfies that still benefit from being improved

The progress of the iPhone 12 Pro compared to the iPhone 11 Pro are indeed there, but on the margins. Not enough, in any case, replace the elder with the latest born. The price of the 12 pro remains unchanged: from 1159 euros. But where the 11 pro offered at this price a capacity of 64 GB, the 12 pro in 128. And it is 5g.

For experienced users and well -stocked wallet, Apple offers the iPhone 12 in two pro version. We go from 5.8 inches to 6.1 inches for the “small” model, and from 6.5 to 6.7 inches for the large. Everyone has a Super Retina XDR slab (2,778 x 1,284, 458 pixels per inch), with a luminosity peak of 1,200 nits. On the other hand, no 120 Hz (or even 90 Hz…).

The iPhone 12 Pro will integrate a new format called Apple Proraw: in substance, it is a question of applying on the RAW (raw) photos the computerized treatments of Apple (Smart HDR and Deep Fusion). All the power of the A14 and its neural Engine is used to obtain the most dynamic, precise and bright images. Proraw will arrive later this year.

Pro smartphones will be able to record video in Dolby Vision HDR, with a depth of 10 bits (60 times more colors than before). Another function reserved for pros: a lidar ! As on the iPad Pro, this sensor gives the smartphone better information to calculate the depth. Particularly useful for augmented reality experiences, but also to improve autofocus for photos (an autofocus 6 times faster in low brightness).

Obviously, the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max support 5G, they also take the magsafe magnetic on the back and operate with the A14 Bionic.

Smartphones will be available in four colors (peaceful blue, gold, graphite and silver):

  • iPhone 12 pro: € 1,159 (128 GB), € 1,279 (256 GB), € 1,509 (512 GB)
  • iPhone 12 pro max: € 1,259 (128 GB), € 1,379 (256 GB), € 1,609 (512 GB)

Pre -orders start on October 16 for the iPhone 12 Pro, November 6 for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Deliveries a week later.
