For the 2008 Peugeot, the recast of mid-term promises to be delicate. As often when it is a model that is a hit ! The little French SUV always pleases, does competition thanks to very concrete qualities, and ultimately did not need big touch -ups to continue his career serenely. Except for the electric version E-2008, which brings together most of the developments and tries to erase its autonomy gaps.

With its big brother 3008, the second generation Peugeot 2008 appeared in 2019 is one of the big pillars of good health of the lion. Success is even insolent, at least in France, where it dominates the ultra-competitive segment of small SUV stars of the moment. SUV called “urban”. Okay, most of them act as the main home of the home and are amply able to do something other than frog in town. The 2008, one of the greats of the long segment of its 4.30 m, is also particularly well equipped: sharp behavior, habitability and general comfort gratifies with appreciable versatility. One of the reasons for its great shape, no doubt. More than 700.000 copies sold in Europe since its launch ! Its domination is less obvious on a European scale, but with us, it still is ahead of the Renault Captur and Volkswagen T-Roc, its most serious rivals. Beware, however, of some new entrants: we are thinking in particular of the new Hyundai Kona, which arrives with a full range (hybrid and electric).

It was therefore necessary to perpetuate success without touching what pleases and improving what could be. No more ? The style of 2008 was not particularly dated, but it was a question of granting 2008 to the rest of the current range. The facelift is therefore quite heavy: the whole front side has changed, receiving a new grille (with the new Peugeot logo) and three large ramps of LEDs in “claw”, on both sides. It seems a little more massive, more visually present, but its ratings obviously did not move an iota. The rear changes more subtly, is satisfied again (mainly) and a Peugeot lettering instead of the lion.

What changes on board the restyled Peugeot 2008

At first glance, the cabin has not really moved. We find the same arrangement in “strata”, horizontally, shared with the 208 (logic, the 2008 is based on the same platform). The whole is rather well constructed and has good materials of good quality, especially in GT superior finish. Always the same small steering wheel, overlooked by the instrumentation “I-Cockpit”, which does not please all morphologies when it is necessary to adjust its driving position ! Some love it, then. Note that the active basic finish is satisfied with conventional analog counters, the digital display being standard from the intermediate level. There is new, on the other hand, at the media interface and the central screen: all now have a 10 -inch screen, with revised graphics. Good point, the old system was aging. The manipulations are more fluid and faster, and the menus have been redesigned. Not yet an example of ergonomics, but there is best. Same thing for the rear view camera, whose display is much more neat.

The 10 -inch central screen is now standard, and the display is more neat. Another novelty: the auto gearbox lever has been replaced by an aluminum -style tipper. For the rest, the interior of 2008 is not very. Careful and spacious !

We also note the new auto gearbox command, inherited from the 308, with a small aluminum -style switch. Purified and more modern, but a little less practical to use than the simple lever he replaces. For the rest, the 2008 environment is unchanged. The rear habitability is flattering (less at the front right, due to the imposing central console), the saddlery comfort is correct, and two adults are rather well received for a car in this template. The observation also applies to luggage, with 434 l, for thermal versions as for our electric E-2008.

Driving: French engine, Chinese battery. and progress

Aside from a simplified and refocused range on the best -selling versions, nothing to report on the side of thermal engines. 3 cylinders 1.2 PureTech Essence is offered in 100 hp with manual gearbox, or 130 hp with EAT8 car gearbox (while waiting for the last evolution with micro-hybridization which arrives on the 3008). Good news for big rollers, which can always look into the 1.5 BlueHDI 130 hp (only in car gearbox), more sober and pleasant (a height for a diesel) than the small “3 legs” petrol.

The restyling mainly concerns the front (new grille is diurnal fires), as well as the engine-battery set of E-2008. The evolution is welcome, but the fast load remains modest (100 kW) and the 11 kW charger is optional.

The real novelty concerns the electric version, which needed it. The E-2008 engine and the ex-PSA derivatives was clearly not a model of energy efficiency ! Electric 2008 thus benefits from the latest developments launched on the Jeep Avenger and DS3 E-Tense, its stellantis cousins, and more recently on the Opel Astra e. The battery (supplied by Chinese Catl) does not take up more space but the new cells have brought its capacity from 50 to 54 kWh. Attention, raw values: in reality, the new battery displays 48.1 kWh nets. At the same time, its weight has been reduced by 5 kg. Not so bad, even if the gains are marginal.

More notable, on the other hand: the new engine (now French and made in Moselle by Nidec Leroy-Somer, a subsidiary of Stellantis) is less greedy, its power goes to 156 hp (136 hp before) and the heat pump is now series. Start to end to end, these improvements allow Peugeot to announce a range of 406 km in a mixed cycle, or about 60 km of earnings.

The additional 20 CHs do not offer dazzling progress. No change even, in Eco or normal mode, since power is always restricted to 82 and 109 hp respectively ! The 156 hp are only delivered in sport mode, ditto for the maximum torque (still 260 nm). The time from 0 to 100 km/h then wins almost 1 s (9.1 s, or 8 tenths better), but the operation remains strictly identical. similar any electric car. Muscular from the start, linear then. The functioning of the whole, muffled as possible, is pleasant. And above all, well served by a balanced and comfortable chassis. The E-2008 is less lively than a thermal version, logically, because of its always high weight (1.550 kg, therefore at least 300 kg more than a 2008 PureTech) but remains surprisingly agile and healthy in its reactions. On the road, the E-2008 is distinguished above all by its exemplary comfort and its good quality behavior. Only complaint: recovery in deceleration is limited (even in b), and variations in the annoying brake pedal.

In the end, we could not take our E-2008 after the 400 km promised. Demanding course, led by good train, under a Spanish lead sun: the proof, fairly harsh, ended in an average of 16 kWh / 100 km. Not bad, given the conditions. In comparison, the 136 hp previous precedent displayed similar consumption by much more temperate climate, on raised journeys. We can therefore now count, without apprehension (and avoiding lingering too much on the highway), on approximately 320 km of autonomy in real conditions and without any particular effort. Too bad, on the other hand: the charging capacities have not moved and place the E-2008 behind the competition: always 100 kW in charge CCS (or 30 minutes to go from 20 to 80 %), and 7.4 kw by alternating current (at least 4:30 for 80 %). The 11 kW charger is an option (€ 400).

Equipment, prices: an almost premium 2008

The call price, at 26.€ 400, may seem attractive given the equipment already present in active basic finish: reversing radar, cruise control, line crossing alert. We will be satisfied at this price of the small puretech of 100 hp, and of sheet metal rims. Then the bill climbs quickly ! The 130 hp PureTech in the pace finish reaches 31.700 €. As for the electric, the E-2008 starts at 40.150 € (before bonus of 5.000 €) with the old 136 hp engine, which remains curiously in the catalog (stock to sell ?)). To take advantage of the new battery and the 156 hp engine, it will take 41.€ 600 at the entry level. A Jeep Avenger is 2.600 € cheaper, and the future fiat 600th could start a lower notch. The most dangerous competition could well come from the Stellantis family.

Launched in 2019, the second generation of Peugeot 2008 represents an essential vehicle on the French market and therefore logically for the Lion brand. Nothing surprising in this, since it was already the case with the first. The claws that were integrated into the headlights become the new light signature by being larger and they descend to the shield. The latter is also fully redesigned. All these modifications give a new look and even more personality in the 2008, which was already not missing. At the rear, the developments are lighter with in particular the disappearance of the logo and a new design of the lights.



In the passenger compartment, the new features relate to the integration of a 10 inch multimedia screen, which is gaining in fluidity and offers more modern displays with for example navigation on the whole screen, which was not the case before. The 10 -inch digital instrumentation is standard except on the entry level. It is even 3D on the high finish. Among the other new features, we will also note, the new design of the gear lever. The presentation generally remains very offset from the competition. The quality of the materials is in the right average of the category.

No change on the other hand, in terms of practical aspects with in particular a loading volume of 430 liters and an interesting rear habitability for a vehicle of a 4.30m template.

A very (too) expensive electric version.

With beginner prices at € 41,600 and reaching € 45,100 on the high-end on the test today, the E-2008 is expensive, very expensive since its prices are higher than those of a Renault Megane e-tech and an entry -level Tesla 3 Tesla 3 sold for € 41,900. For comparison, the E-2008 is sold, with equivalent finishing, € 11,700 more than a 2008 PureTech 130 hp, much more versatile. It makes you think ..
