  • The essential :
  • L’Internet by satellite constitutes a credible alternative when you are not satisfied by your ADSL connection and non-eligible for fiber.
  • Three large operators offer various offers on the internet niche by unlimited satellite: French Northnet, German Skydsl, And Numerisat.
  • Watch out for supplements ! Do not forget to include in the overall budget of your connection installation cost of the essential parabolic antenna.

Why choose the internet by satellite ?

Unlimited satellite internet: the alternative to fiber and ADSL

If you do not live in or near a large urban center, it is likely that you are part of Internet users for whom the search for a Good flow at a reasonable cost is far from obvious.

Even more if you use the Internet for your professional activity: then it is no longer just a question of having a good internet connection to surf the web, but also – and above all – to download attachments or share the connection with D ‘Other users.

Currently, no ISP can offer you better than 3 Mbit/s in ADSL ? You are too far from the local center of your operator and your ADSL line is too long ? You are not yet eligible for fiber ? Now is the time to take a closer look at what the operators of theInternet by satellite.

Note before choosing an offer: parable and subsidy.

house with parable

Before embarking on a comparison of the three major operators present on the French market, you should know that, as for television, theInternet by satellite supposes the installation of a parable. However, the cost of the equipment and its installation is not trivial, even if it is an expenditure made only once. Of course, all operators offer connection or installation kits, but at relatively high prices.

We will come back to this when we compare the offers from Nordnet, Skydsl, and Numerisat. As for the installation itself, it may be interesting to ask a quote from a local installer: indeed, it can benefit from better prices on equipment.

Finally, you should know that certain local communities allocate additional subsidies, ranging from € 100 to € 600, in order to promote internet access per satellite. In the program “Digital territories cohesion“, the State can offer up to € 150 to help install a parable.

However, these aids differ considerably according to the departments and their conditions of access are very strict. When calculating your budget, check if you benefit from it and for what amount. Small tip: you will find on the operator’s site Nordnet the list of these subsidies, classified according to the place of residence.

Nordnet, the unlimited satellite offer

At Nordnet, the satellite is Neosat from € 39.90/month

The French giant Orange has a subsidiary responsible for marketing alternative offers to ADSL and fiber. This is called Nordnet and offers three satellite Internet connection offers, intended for individuals residing in isolated areas or “white areas”.

The Nordnet satellite offer has evolved in recent years, to go from a “quadruple play” offer to three offers: Neosat Vital, Ideal and Ultra. The offer Neosat Vital, offered at € 39.90/month (with 1 month offered), offers unlimited internet access and a downhill speed of 50 Mbit/s. It is without commitment and fixed calls are billed for consumption

The other two supplier offers, Ideal And Ultra, offer flows ranging from 75 to 100 Mbit/s, fixed telephony as well as a mobile package (30 GB 4G or 100 GB 4G/5G). The ultra offer includes television via TNT SAT.

Skydsl, the unlimited satellite internet made in Germany

Skydsl: a satellite offer from € 12.90/month

The German operator offers a “basic” satellite offer from € 12.90/month.

This basic price called Skydsl2+ at home S, includes only theInternet and landline. Such a price is obviously limited in data volume: here the ceiling is 8GB monthly, which is acceptable in the context of occasional use. The internet flows announced are 18 Mbit/s at most in Download and 1 Mbit/s Maxi in Upload.

At Skydsl, to obtain a Unlimited data volume, You must subscribe to the offer at least Skydsl2+ at home m : the monthly price then increases to € 26.90/month, after the first 3 months offered. The announced internet flow rates are higher: 24 Mbit/s maximum in Download, and still 1 Mbit/s max in upload.

If you wish to benefit from higher internet flows, you can also take out the offer Skydsl2+ at home L. This will offer you a maximum speed of 40 Mbit/s in Download and 2 Mbit/s in upload.

An installation kit and the possibility of a TV extension

Let’s say it right away, at this level theSkydsl offer is more complex to understand. The operator offers separately:

  • A satellite antenna.
  • A emission-reception module named TIA allowing Internet exchanges, to be fixed directly on the satellite antenna.
  • A RM4100 satellite modem designed for the transmission of satellite data.
  • A integrated wifi router RM5111.
  • A TV extension kit for using the Skydsl2+ satellite antenna for the Skydsl2+ Internet connection and the reception of satellite television.

Each element can thus be purchased separately in the context of a “tailor -made” installation. However, Skydsl also offers a “complete package” for the rental bringing these elements at an attractive price:

  • € 9.90/month for the rental of the equipment necessary for the Internet connection (parable, tria module, MoDem RM4100).
  • € 6.90 monthly for rental of the WiFi RM5111 Optional router.
  • € 1.90 monthly for the rental of the optional TV extension kit.

So you can decide Rent this equipment. This remains the property of Skydsl and must be returned at the end of the contract. However, you will also have the possibility of buying it later, benefiting from a reduction of up to 80%.

Skydsl: competitive advantages ?

The operator promises a high quality of connection with flows up to 40 Mbit/s for download. Her ACM technology allows it to operate independently of the weather, while the satellite is often criticized for being dependent on bad weather. ACM ensuring that a connection as stable as possible, Skydsl promises that the Internet works better than traditional satellite television.

Finally, let us point out the existence of a “streaming” option at € 8.90/month available in the “Skydsl2+ home at the House L Premium Rate”. This option offers a bandwidth up to 50 Mbit/s, optimized for streaming.

Unlimited NUMSPEED20: the only unlimited satellite internet offer from Numerisat

This Numerisat offer is no longer available : the supplier no longer offers an unlimited satellite internet offer. The Numerisat offer with the most complete data envelope is the NUM100 package, which contains 100GB for € 89.90/month.

The second English satellite operator, Numerisat (a subsidiary of the company Avanti based in London) offers in more than thirty French departments mainly in the east and north of the country, as well as in Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland, a panel of five internet offers in from € 19.90/month.

But unlike the 3 other Nordnet, Skydsl and Bigblu operators, these are not really unlimited internet offers: indeed, these offers offer an unlimited time slot only between. 0 a.m. and 6 a.m !

Only one of these offers, the Unlimited Numspeed20 package Billed € 69.90 without obligation, to which must be added 58 € cases, really offers theUnlimited internet all the time. For this sum, you benefit:

  • Of a Unlimited transmission volume With flows up to 40 Mbit/s in Download (download) and 6 Mbit/s in upload (sending).
  • Of Parabole + MoDem kit At a price of € 279 (the delivery costs are offered to you).
  • Of several options such as the WiFi router at € 29, or the parable support at € 42.

Before going further with Numerisat, you should know that this operator, present in France since December 2016, uses a Hylas 2B satellite which covers around 50 French departments. Depending on your geographic location, you may not be eligible for this offer.

Big Blu: an English offer “hand sewn” !

Attention Bigblu was bought by Eutelsat and no longer welcome new customers. The offers described below which have been subscribed before the takeover remains functional, but you can no longer subscribe to it.

Bigblu: the Europasat brand from € 19.99/month

Latest on the national market, Big Blu claims to be the European leader in theUnlimited internet by satellite. In fact, the operator is already located in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal, Greece and Norway. And of course in France, with the ambition of connecting people living in the white area.

From his French office located in Amiens, Bigblu markets 3 formulas ofInternet subscription by satellite from € 19.99/month (for 6 months then € 29.90/month). Recommended for basic use, this first package baptized Konnect Unlimited Bronze offers 16 mb/s of debit and a respectable envelope of 10 giga of priority data.

Box and WiFi router are included, but it should be added to the activation fees to € 49.99. On the other hand, the rental of the satellite kit is offered, While it will cost you € 229.99 if you want to buy it.

A basic Internet package and phone and TV options

The package Konnect Unlimited Bronze constitutes a base to which you can add various options. Indeed, this competitive rate only includes internet connection.

Fixed telephony is optional at € 1.90/month for unlimited calls to fixed and € 14.90 for unlimited calls to fixed and mobiles.

TV is also optional with a TV kit at € 69.00 (so that the parabolic antenna also becomes a TV antenna) and a Fransat HD TV decoder at € 79.95 for the reception of 62 television channels, Access to a recorder etc.

Bronze, Silver or Gold: It’s up to you to choose your internet by unlimited satellite

In addition to its unlimited Konnect Bronze Konnect Package, Bigblu also offers two more expensive formulas: Konnect Silver And Konnect Gold.

For regular use, the Konnect Silver unlimited formula offers 30 Mb/s of flow and an envelope of 50 giga of priority data for € 24.90/month (for 6 months then € 39.90/month).

For intensive use, the unlimited Konnect Gold formula offers 50 Mb/s of flow and an envelope of 100 giga of priority data for € 49.99/month (for 6 months then € 69.99/month).

Unlimited internet by satellite: advantages and disadvantages

Internet by satellite has many advantages for residents of rural areas. However, this technology is also accompanied by several drawbacks. Here is a non -exhaustive list of the main advantages and disadvantages of the internet by satellite:

  • Unlimited satellite Internet is freed from terrestrial geographic constraints: no shadow or white zone, unlike ADSL.
  • Extences of flow rates up to 20 Mb/s on average, superior to the ADSL at “end of the line”.
  • Healthy competition between French, English and German, each offering their vision of the satellite and a wide variety of offers.
  • The possibility of financial assistance from local authorities, according to the location of your installation.
  • The higher cost with equal performance.
  • A bandwidth more easily subject to congestion than the ADSL or the fiber.
  • A certain instability in the weather and the vagaries of the weather.
  • Latence time: this phenomenon is best known to network game enthusiasts, who require a very fast reaction time. The satellite connection, because of the position far removed from the geostationary satellite, lack of reactivity.

The satellite, by the way, how it works ?

A simple principle

satellite parable

Metropolitan France is covered by so -called “geostationary” satellites, the position of which is “fixed” compared to their geographical area of coverage. As the earth turns, they must stay in orbit, at 36,000 km above sea level, to keep their position in relation to the earth.

Data transmission is done by Radio waves in high frequencies. The signal is first issued from the earth towards the satellite. Then, he broadcasts him towards the parabolic antennas, which can be located several hundred kilometers from the emission point.

This is the main advantage of the satellite: the transmission is made in space and is absolutely not dependent on the terrestrial geographic location of the reception antennas.

“Virtual” operators

Many satellites park above France. Among them, two are more specifically intended for the Internet: Ka-Sat of Eutelsat and Astra 2F of his astra. Ka-Sat, launched in 2010 from the Russian launch base in Baikonour, is the first European satellite entirely dedicated to broadband Internet. Its competitor is the astra 2F satellite of the European group SES, based in Luxembourg. It was launched in 2012, by an Ariane 5 rocket, since the French base in Kourou, Guyana.

However, there is no direct link Between satellites and operators. Following the example of La Poste or Coriolis, who “on earth” market internet offers but do not owner network, Nordnet, Skydsl and Bigblu are “virtual” operators who can use one or the other 2 satellites. Depending on the bandwidth available where you are, your operator will select one or the other to optimize your Unlimited satellite internet connection.

  • The essential
  • L’Internet by satellite is a solution that is particularly suitable for Halls not eligible for DSL and fiber, especially in “white areas“”.
  • However, data and data envelopes are less substantial, with higher price.
  • Three suppliers today offer offers directly to individuals in France.

Live and work outside the major urban centers, why not ? Provided you benefit from a Good internet connection, with some Sufficient flows to surf the web, But also to download attachments or share the connection with other users.

If no ISP can offer you better than 2 or 3 Mbit/s In ADSL because your line is too long (so too far from the local center of your ISP), or if you are not in an area eligible for fiber, do not despair: there is an alternative and, unlike, to What we often think, it is not necessarily overpriced. This is of course theInternet by satellite.

Internet by satellite: how it works ?

The entire territory of mainland France is covered by so -called “geostationary” satellites. This term means that their position is “fixed” compared to their geographic area of coverage. But as we know, the earth turns: therefore, the satellites must be maintained in orbit, to 36,000 km above sea level, To keep their position in relation to the earth.

Data transmission is done by Radio waves in high frequencies, Around 20 GHz. The signal is first issued from the earth towards the satellite, which then returns it to the parabolic antennas. The latter can be located several hundred kilometers from the emission point. The big advantage of the satellite is that Transmission is done in space.

Among the many satellites parked above us, two are specially intended for the Internet:

Both have large capacities and beams to reach flows until 22 Mbit/s in reception And 6 Mbit/s in broadcast For Internet access for individuals. Enough to do much better than ADSL figures in so -called “white” areas (around 2 Mbit/s in reception). This is why areas poorly covered by ADSL and not eligible for fiber have every interest in going through a satellite to access the Internet.

Other satellite internet offers

Previously, Viveole, SAT2Way and IDHD also offered internet access offers by satellite. They have since been bought by Europasat (Bigblu). The Alsatis supplier has also ceased to offer satellite internet offers. As for Ozone, he gave him his activities to Nordnet (himself bought by Orange).

Nordnet, Europasat and Ozone have benefited since March 2019 from “digital cohesion” certification, which guarantees special and accessible offers for individuals. In this context, the State undertakes to compensate for the costs of line creation or commissioning up to 150 €.

Europasat offers (bigblu)

It is no longer possible to take out a bigblu offer in France.

The Europasat operator, renowned Bigblu in 2019, offered unlimited offers, with a flow that increases according to the price. So you could choose between three offers:

  1. The offer Unlimited bronze at € 29.99/month for a basic use; With a flow of up to 16mb/s.

How to connect to the internet by satellite ?

Astra 2F cover

To benefit from the satellite internet, it is therefore necessary to go through a supplier, which markets an internet access offer via one or the other of these 2 satellites. In addition to satellite owners who have launched their own brands (Konnect – formerly Tooway – for Eutelsat and Astra Connect for Astra SES), there are other access providers who offer satellite internet offers.

Nordnet, Skydsl, Europasat (now bigblu). As with the “MVNO”, these telephone operators who do not have their own network (Virgin Mobile, Auchan Telecom, La Poste Mobile. ), there are virtual operators for the satellite internet. Depending on the bandwidth available where you are, your ISP will select one or the other of the 2 satellites to optimize your connection

How to choose your satellite internet offer ?

What is the subscription suitable for my internet use ?

For satellite internet, most ISP offer fairly similar offers. Before entering the details of these commercial offers, know that you will have to choose between 3 types of packages:

  1. A “basic” offer around 30-40 € monthly With a limited flow, between 40 and 100 GB depending on the FAI. This is reserved for occasional uses, For which you do not need too much data volume: consultation of web pages, emails without attachments, no movie download, etc.
  2. An “average” offer around 40-50 € monthly for a regular use, who will allow you to browse the internet, send and receive your emails, download some files. But you will be too limited to consider professional or intensive use, such as spending hours on YouTube.
  3. A “maxi” offer for a intensive use. This time the budget climbs to 60 € or even 70 € monthly or more. Please note, you can browse websites, send emails and share documents, listen to music. But forget the TV streaming, HD movies downloads or network games, which require flows further higher than 22 Mbits/.

How to compare available satellite internet offers available ?

Before reviewing the available offers, here are the points of comparison to have in mind when choosing:

  • Watch over data volume Included in the monthly package. Certain basic offers give access to 5 GB per month: it is very quickly exceeded, unless you only stick to the consultation of web pages. Note that this is the volume of data exchanged, therefore the traffic in both directions: both descending (reception or “download”) and amount (shipping).
  • Check them Unlimited beaches. Nordnet and Numerisat notably offer unlimited consumption beaches in some of their packages, but Only at night. And the time slots are not the same depending on the.
  • What is going on When you exceed your package ? Some cut the connection, others slow down the flow. to be checked before signing !
  • Choose the ” triple play »» ? Some operators include TV and fixed telephony, while others focus only on the Internet. For others, like Skydsl, these services are simply available as an option.
  • Think about parable and of its installation (are you able to do it yourself ?) as well as its technical constraints: clear view, orientation, etc.
  • Check the subsidy which you can benefit from the installation of the parable: are you eligible using the state of € 150 ? You can check this online on the Nordnet website.
  • Trick : to estimate your monthly consumption, nothing better than a online simulator ! It will help you determine, according to your uses, what is the volume of data you need. A precious help when choosing your package.

To compare in the blink of an eye all the satellite offers on the market, you can directly go to the internet package comparator of Selectra.

Satellite internet: advantages and disadvantages

What are the advantages of satellite internet offers ?

  1. This technology Really frees terrestrial geographic constraints: no shadow or white zone, as in the case of ADSL.
  2. THE Fai Offering these offers have speed speeds up to 50.
  3. A increased competition Between ISPs with a wide variety of offers makes it easier to find the formula adapted to your needs. You can for example choose between internet alone or triple play including TV and fixed telephony, between buy your parable or simply rent it, or between benefiting from unlimited beaches or not.
  4. You can benefit from a Financial assistance from local authorities, Available according to the location of your installation.

And what are the disadvantages ?

  1. The cost : with equal performance, it is much higher than the ADSL. Here, unlimited is not the rule but the exception.
  2. Technical limitations : Faced with the continual increase in internet traffic and therefore bandwidth needs, the limitations of the satellite are quickly reached. In addition, it is more easily subject to congestion than ADSL.
  3. Instability : Unlike the ADSL, satellite connection is not very stable and sometimes causes the anger of users frustrated by these “mood swings”. Although the FAI defends itself, it is also relatively sensitive to weather conditions (thunderstorms, snow. ))
  4. Latency : It is a well -known phenomenon of network game enthusiasts, which require maximum reactivity. The satellite connection is not efficient at this level, because of the geostationary position distant from the satellite, 36,000 km from the earth.

Satellite offer equipment, the parable

Parable

Installing a parable has a cost and it is quite high.

THE ” Connection kits »Are offered by ISPs at prices around € 400. Are you able to do this installation yourself ? Depending on the case, it may be interesting to ask an installer a quote, as it benefits from better prices on the equipment.

You can theoretically benefit from help Between 100 € and 600 € from your local community. Indeed, many of them want to promote access to Internet by satellite.

Attention, These aids differ considerably according to the departments. In addition, they are not easy to obtain, the conditions of access being strict. So when establishing your budget, check how much you can benefit. To help you, the Nordnet website offers a list of these subsidies according to your place of residence.

Namely said above, the State has been committed since March 2019, via the system Digital territories cohesion, to be financed up to 150 € equipment costs to put internet service by satellite. If you live in a white area, it is very likely that you can benefit from this help.

Internet by satellite: what are the offers available in France ?

Fiber to absent subscribers, Insufficient and tired of the ADSL ? And if the solution to obtain a decent connection did not come from the sky ? With the arrival of Starlink on the market, offers offering an internet connection via satellite are more and more highlighted. Let’s take stock of satellite Internet subscriptions available in France.

Take a simple observation: even if 92.5 % of French households theoretically have access to an internet connection, the disparity between the populations according to their locality is however huge. Especially with regard to broadband.

Inevitably, urban areas are largely favored due to a larger population density. In campaigns and areas with low population density, white areas are commonplace with almost absent network infrastructure, even with regard to the mobile network. One can also think of people with nomadic, on the road, as at sea, with an impossibility of connecting to a terrestrial or even mobile network effectively.

And if the solution came from space with the internet by satellite ? In recent years have seen a good number of actors promise promising high -speed Internet access since anywhere thanks to this technology, the famous Starlink of Elon Musk in mind. We have taken stock of the offers available in France.

How the internet connection by satellite works ?

On the user side, everything works via a parable located on the roof of the building to be connected, coupled with a modem, which emits data packets to satellites. This is the same configuration as for the TV reception by satellite, we think in particular of actors in France like Fransat.

Whether for Internet or television, data packages will make four round trips of 36,000 km for a total of 144,000 km, a distance equivalent to half a Lune-Lune route.

Before being a technology seeking to replace conventional connections, the satellite network responds to a fundamental problem: limiting the digital fracture and promoting information exchanges, even in the most remote and theoretically impossible areas to attach to the network.

If we remain on a national scale, for conventional internet service providers, the installation of network equipment is proportionally profitable for the number of possible subscribers. Installing relay antennas or optical fiber cables in weakly populated areas has little interest (for the moment) for operators.

Orange, SFR, Bouygues Télécom: do operators have satellite internet offers ?

Despite deployment campaigns, traditional ISPs and telephony operators cannot serve the entire territory, mainly for reasons of cost and profitability.

Also, for questions of infrastructure and strategic positioning, operators maintain complementarity relationships with suppliers of the satellite internet. This is particularly the case between Orange and Eutelsat. The historic operator has also already announced that it wanted to offer its own satellite internet subscriptions in the future, in addition to fiber, 4G and 5G. It is also a way for the operator to maintain national sovereignty in a highly strategic market.

The satellite Internet market, an unstoppable expansion. In 2021, the satellite Internet market was estimated at $ 3.985 million. By 2030, it should rise to $ 17.431 million.

What are the satellite internet offers available in France ?

Let it be said, the internet market by satellite in France is somewhat … satellite (you have it ?)). Do not expect subscriptions offered by major telecom players in France such as SFR, Free, Bouygues Telecom or Orange, even if the latter already has a corresponding offer via its subsidiary Nordnet and intends to develop in this area ‘future as seen above. In the meantime, only 4 operators exist in France.

Starlink

Starlink has operated in France since May 2021 and has become in some time the most popular solution on the market. It must be said that the system managed by the American SpaceX (property of Elon Musk) offers a fairly unique turnkey solution and promises performance and versatility without real competition. The subscription is could not be simpler with a unique price (50 euros per month) all with a kit to install at home (450 euros).

Unlike other solutions, Starlink uses its own transmission technology provided via the SpaceX satellite constellation, which allows, among other things, to benefit from a theoretically optimal reception wherever we are in the world, even if some countries are not yet supported. Starlink is clearly the most advanced solution on the market with performances comparable to what fiber connections offer and turns out to be an excellent alternative to 4G/5G connections, especially in white zone.

Northnet

Nordnet is a brand belonging to the Orange group since 1998 and offers network solutions for individuals and professional, including an offer called Neosat taking over the triple/quadruple play package (Internet, TV, landline and mobile phone), all passing through a satellite connection. The network transmission technology offered by Nordnet goes through Ka-Sat, an Eutelsat European satellite launched in 2010 and covering a large part of the old continent.

A single satellite, therefore, contrary to what Starlink offers and therefore, the proposed connection is less than that of the American competitor and above all more unstable. Nevertheless, this is a complete offer comparable to that of a more classic fiber/ADSL operator and the only one offering the contribution of a TNT TV bouquet and a fixed telephony line.

Skydsl

Skydsl is a telecommunications service of German origin offered by the firm Skydsl Global GmbH based in Berlin. The brand is however available in many European countries, including France. Skydsl uses the fleet of eutelsat satellites to offer its services, including the famous Ka-Sat offering much better performance than the old generation of satellites intended for sending data.

Unlike Nordnet, we are not dealing with an operator offering more complete and very popular services in France (Internet, TV, telephony). The offers offered by Skydsl are content to offer a simple internet connection with downloads for download of up to 50 Mb/s.

Ouisat

Ouisat is a brand of operator Numérsat, itself owned by Avanti Communications Group, a British company specializing in satellite network solutions. Avanti using its Hylas 2 satellite, which only covers 35 % of French territory, only a few departments (50, notably those in East and North), Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland can benefit from Numerisat offers.

Depending on your geographic location, the antenna which will be provided to you will therefore be more or less large (from 80 to 98 cm). A change of size required to guarantee the promised connection speed. If we compare the Ouisat offers to other operators, they are much less attractive, the fault at high prices and especially the limits of data volume according to its package.

So, internet by satellite, we recommend ?

There is no doubt that satellite network technologies have a wide margin of evolution and that this type of solution could ultimately compete serious with more conventional connections, Starlink having largely opened the way. However, it must be realized that for the moment, this type of offer is above all intended for people whose locality does not allow you to obtain an optimal experience via land infrastructure (fiber, ADSL, 4G or 5G mobile network)). We think in particular of people living in white or mobile home (motorhome, boat, etc.)).

We must also realize that the French market is still difficult to conquer. Network infrastructure in France is already well implemented with much more optimized overall coverage than in our European neighbors for example, where white areas are much more numerous. In comparison, the American market is much more open to this type of solution, due to the topography and the less accessible network offer.

In case you are interested, do not expect to obtain an optimal experience in all circumstances. Despite the technological advances, a satellite network is by nature unstable with high latency: so do not expect to be able to launch a gaming game in excellent conditions in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

It is also necessary to count on rates that are still a little high compared to more conventional offers, especially with regard to operators offering limited subscriptions. Installation and investment in specific equipment can also be a brake for many.
