Volkswagen ID4

The Volkswagen ID.4 started its marketing in France at the end of 2020. Its price will depend on the version and the finish chosen:

Volkswagen ID test.4: What is the new electric SUV worth ?

First electric SUV of the German brand, the new Volkswagen ID.4 Share many of its characteristics with the compact ID.3. We were able to try it in its 1st max limited series equipped with a 77 kWh battery.

Everything goes very quickly at Volkswagen. As she launched her electric compact ID only a few months ago.3, the German brand already embraces on a second model. With the new ID.4, Volkswagen tackles the ever more popular segment of electric SUVs.

Mechanics borrowed from ID.3

Inheriting a large part of the aesthetic codes of the ID.3, the new Volkswagen ID.4 also uses the same components. For this first test, the German brand made us available a 1st Max version, a limited series combining a block of 204 horsepower installed on the rear axle with a 77 kWh battery. Consisting of 12 modules and 288 cells, it promises more than 500 km of autonomy in WLTP cycle.

On the recharging side, the 11 kW on -board charger is completed by a combo connector. In 125 kW, it is enough to recover 80 % of autonomy in around thirty minutes. Like many electric vehicles, Volkswagen ID.4 can be associated with a mobile application. This makes it possible to follow the load level, the remaining autonomy, but also to pre-program the recharge and the preheating of the passenger compartment.

As for the ID.3, other configurations are offered. We will thus find on the entry level an ID version.4 Pure combining an electric motor of 148 horsepower with a 52 kWh battery. On the other hand, a 4 -wheel drive version with all -wheel drive will arrive a little later.

A compact SUV

In terms of template, the Volkswagen electric SUV is relatively compact. With 4.58 m in length, it displays 13 centimeters more than a Peugeot 3008. Then count 1.85 m in width and 1.60 m in height (1.63 m with the roof bars).

On the high -end 1st max finish of our test model, we benefit from a beautiful metallic “monaco” metallic paint and a panoramic glass roof. In 21 inches, the rims are very pretty, but not necessarily ideal for promoting autonomy.

At the rear, the trunk opens electrically. In terms of volume, this ID.4 Accumulates 543 liters of loading space. Like the ID.3, it has a double background to store the charging cables and a bench with a ski hatch. Folding in two parts, this allows the capacity to 1,575 liters to bring.

Taking advantage of a 2,77 m wheelbase, the Volkswagen ID.4 offers habitability worthy of superior category models. In the rear seats, we are well installed. Well drawn, the bench offers a nice leg space.

If the absence of a central tunnel makes it easy to accommodate the middle passenger, it will however have to accommodate a more firm file than the two side places.

At the front, the seat is comfortable with high -end upscale upholstery with electric adjustment. Like on the id.3, we take advantage of individual armrests. In terms of general finish, we are a bit disappointed. The many rigid elements denote with the high -end positioning of our test version.

Digital, the instrumentation is very readable and supplemented by a head -up display device. The multimedia system is based on a large 10 -inch tactile compatible with Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Integrating the new Volkswagen software interface, it is not always very responsive. The manufacturer admits himself to wipe the plaster, but regularly updates remotely to improve his system.

A gentle electric SUV

Like on the id.3, the speed selector is positioned to the right of the steering wheel. It is also through this that we can start the “B” mode. The device slightly strengthens the intensity of the engine brake. However, it is not as evolved as the driving pallets offered on a Hyundai Kona or a Honda E.

The selection of different driving modes goes through the central screen. On this 1st max finish, we take advantage of the suspensions controlled as standard. These automatically adapt according to the mode chosen, becoming more flexible in Eco mode and harder in sport mode.

In town, this ID.4 is a real living room on wheels. Very silent at low speed, it offers exceptional driving and very correct comfort in terms of suspension. At 10.2 m, its robbery diameter makes it particularly handy. A real asset for the city ! For maneuvers, the reversing camera compensates for a certain lack of visibility to the rear window if the headrests are raised.

In sport mode, suspensions are firmed, the recalibrated steering and the reactivity of the improved accelerator. For a family SUV accumulating more than 2,100 kilos, accelerations are correct. The 0 to 100 km/h is thus shot in 8.5 seconds. On the dynamic level, the 493 kilos of the battery installed under the floor offer a very good center of gravity. Only downside: the brake pedal. A little mollassonne at the start of the race, it has the advantage of being easy to dose.

On the highway, the 204 horsepower of the SUV allow you to easily fit into the traffic lanes. In addition to the active regulator, offered as standard on all versions, this high -end finish offers level 2 autonomous driving. Via the central screen, it will be possible to activate or deactivate the different features. In the end, the device offered by Volkswagen seems more effective to use than that of a Tesla whose software is restrained in Europe. Another pleasant point: the high head display device that identifies vehicles. The system also takes into account the traffic signs to adapt the speed to the limitations.

Consumption and actual autonomy of Lu SUV Volkswagen ID.4

On a mixed course of a hundred kilometers mixing city, road and highway, we end this test at an average of 23.2 kWh/100 km. We are quite far from the 19 kWh/100 km claimed by the manufacturer on the WLTP cycle. Enough to count on a real autonomy of the order of 330 km in the conditions of our test.

On the highway, the German SUV is rather greedy in energy. At 130 km/h at the regulator, our instant consumption oscillated between 33 and 37 kWh/100 km. Unless you reduce its speed to 110, it will be difficult to exceed 250 km on a 100 % highway use.

Volkswagen ID SUV prices.4

In terms of price, this high -end version is billed € 58,950, or € 55,950 once deducted the bonus of € 3,000. It is almost the price of a Tesla Model Y which offers both one better performance and greater autonomy.

Fortunately, the Volkswagen ID.4 exists in more accessible versions. Limited to a small 52 kWh battery, the pure version acts as entry -level. Offering 345 km of autonomy, it starts from € 39,370 which makes it eligible for the maximum bonus of € 7,000. An access rate that will oppose the new Electric Hyundai Kona (€ 39,900), but also and above all to Skoda Enyaq. With equivalent technical configuration, the Czech SUV begins from 36,050 euros excluding bonus.
