Sporty Volkswagen ID.4 GTX DEBUTS With AWD, 295 HOURSEPOWER
Volkswagen wishes to become the most popular sustainable mobility brand. The objective is to increase the market share of 100% electric vehicles in Europe so that it reaches 70% of Volkswagen’s unit sales by 2030 before becoming carbon neutral by 2050. To achieve this ambitious objective, the German manufacturer has developed a whole new family of electric models under the common denominator ID, produced on a dedicated installation in Zwickau in the west of Saxony.
Volkswagen ID.4 GTX
GTI badge is expensive in Volkswagen. But at the time of energy, the three sports letters no longer have their place. The GTI is dead, long live the GTX, which sees its first application on the Volkswagen ID.4.
Test summary
Sports or nostalgic friends of the GTX or Golf GTI scirocco, do not be seduced by the relative dynamism of this version. Certainly more powerful and offering generous covers, the ID.4 GTX is far from the dynamism supposed by its communication and its badge. But its versatility climbs a light cran by being undoubtedly more effective in snow with the right tires, and also allowing to tow 200 kg more than its counterparts, with a maximum of 1,200 kg brakes.
If it is therefore aimed at a certain part of the customers interested in the ID.4, it mainly serves as an image in the range of the electric SUV by taking up the most powerful of the current configurations of the MEB platform. But it constitutes a good internal deal, especially against the Skoda Enyaq 80x (also with two electric motors) of 265 hp, which still receives 53,730 € in Sportline version.

The Cockpit Gets Extra Red Accents, Including on the Steering Wheel and Seats (The Latter Sadly Not Actointed in Plaid Fabric Like Those in the Golf GTI). The Digital Instrument CLUSTER IS REDESSIGNED AND MORE “GTX” BADGING CAN BE FOUND THROUGHOUT.
When it comes to performance, the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX Adds A Second Motor Resulting in an AWD Setup. Output is rated at 295 HorsePower, Torque is not specific. That’s Weird because the non-Gtx awd variant of the ID.4 WE’VE BEEN PROMISED was initially announced with 302 HOURSEPOWER.
Acceleration from 0-100 km/h is a modest-by-moden-EV-Standards 6.2 seconds. Consider that the Slowest Tesla Model y Achieves the Sprint in Five Seconds. Weight is not specific, eith, but we assume it’s heavier than the 2,131 kilograms (4,700 pounds) of the single-motor RWD Model.
The Battery is the Larger of the Two that are available with the id.4, rated at 82 kWh with an actual welfare capacity of 77 kWh. Maximum Range for Europe is estimated at 480 kilometers according to the WLTP test cycle.
Over there, the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX Will Go On Sale This Summer. Volkswagen Canada’s Public Director Relations, Thomas Tetzlaff, Told Us We Will Not Be Getting the.4 in “GTX” FORM, but our awd versions will have the same drivetrain.
Volkswagen ID.5 GTX (2022 -)
Brought back to life by electricity such as Frankenstein, the GTX label makes an unexpected return to Volkswagen. After the ID.4, it is the turn of the cut version of the electric SUV to recreate the link with sportiness and driving pleasure.

After the compact ID.3 which may become the “electric golf of the 21st century”, then the SUV ID.4, ID.5 Presented in November 2021 is the first 100% electric coupe SUV in Volkswagen. Based on the electric modular platform (MEB), the ID.5 Drive directly from the ID.4 unveiled a year earlier. This is the second electric model to wear the “new label” GTX launched in April 2021 by the ID.4 In line with the GTI, GTD and GTE models and therefore also synonymous with “driving pleasure” as Klaus Zellmer, member of the Volkswagen brand, said Marketing and Sales Dés said. The same man has also added that “sustainability and sportiness are not incompatible, they complement themselves, on the contrary, intelligently. »»
This remains to be checked ! It is with a little reserve that we discovered the new ID.5 GTX and this return of a label which, despite the lack of historical recall by Volkswagen, is in reality nothing new (see our file on the history of the acronym GTX in automotive). What remains of its origins today on a SUV which weighs more than 2 tonnes ?
VW Scirocco GTX 16V
The Scirocco GTX 16S launched in October 1985 remains the sportiest version of the Scirocco MK2 coupe. It was even the first Volkswagen to cross the symbolic bar of 200 km/h ! To do this, the engineers had grafted a 4 -valve cylinder head on the 1800 cc block of the Golf GTI. From 112 hp, the power jumped at 139 hp on the new “KR” engine which will later be the happiness of the Golf II GTI 16S.
PRESENTATION
Before knowing more about the taste qualities of the product, let’s dwell a little on the packaging. ID.5 displays a rather consensual design, typically Volkswagen you will tell us, it is true, but which has the (commercial) advantage long demonstrated to know how to please as many. Thus, the golf is not the best -selling car in Europe for 45 years for nothing ! ID.5 is part of this philosophy while trying to be more dynamic than ID.4 by sacrificing a few liters of loading volume. The front part of the vehicle only houses the coolers and parts of the air conditioner.
At the front, the Matrix LED IQ projectors.Light connected by a light strip with the VW logo in its center give the ID range a clean “signature”. It is combined here in GTX version with three light nests of bees arranged on each side which complement the cross lights. The amounts tilted more on the ID.5 And very close to the front, bring fluidity to the roof line which stretches to the integrated rear spoiler. At the rear, horizontal LED lighting accentuates the width by connecting 3D design lights, the cost of which is preferred in the event of a replacement. The whole is after all very (too) little demonstrative despite specific shields and a black roof exclusive to this version and a set of “Ystad” alloy rims of 20 inch. Everything put in each other and in particular with her beautiful “red king” dress, this id.5 GTX is not so villain to look at, for a SUV. It is not only we who say it but especially the passers -by which he manages to catch the look. Furthermore, this sleek and rather well -profiled line is accompanied by a nice coefficient of drag of 0.27, similar to that of a Golf 8 !
Cabin
For a total length of only 4.60 meters, the ID.5 offers a particularly generous space on board. It is this feeling of space that dominates when we settle on board, recalling the great minivans before the extinction of the genre. The engines installed on the axles release a flat floor while the long wheelbase of 2.77 meters allows an interior design like “open space”. The family vocation of the machine is not usurped since we find ourselves with a cabin as large as that of thermal SUVs in the upper category. Furthermore, 12 mm reduced roof guard at the rear remains completely acceptable for adults.
ID.5 GTX adds its personal touch to it with seats with modern materials with perforated logo. Complete room lighting underlines the innovative concept of interior design. It remains to be seen whether the red is what is best hasty with the blue imitation leather. In addition, the quality of plastics in this ID.5 is generally not dazzling and some visible savings decide with past habits.
The equipment is however well garnished with regard to the high -end. Orders and display of the ID driving position.5 are gathered on two screens, a small behind the steering wheel and a large located in the center, with a 12 -inch diagonal. The small screen can be ordered via the multifunction steering wheel. The large screen in the center of the dashboard has a touch functionality. Thanks to ID. Light, a light band located under the windshield, the driver or the driver receive intuitively perceptible information, for example in danger situations or for navigation. ID.5 Nor is it late in the driving assistance department, always more intrusive, starting with an “intelligent” voice command which responds when you tell him “Hello ID. »». A virtual interlocutor to whom we most often ask to be silent ! We will save you the list of different electronic systems, without real interest in what we are interested in here.
ENGINE
While ID.5 has a synchronous rear electric motor with permanent excitation of 204 hp and 310 Nm in its most powerful propulsion version (pro performance), the GTX model adds an asynchronous (ASM) type engine of 109 hp and 162 nm on the front axle. The total power of the ID.5 GTX is 220 kW, 299 hp, while the couple available from 0 rpm is 460 Nm. What move this 2300 kilos SUV more serenely.
Capable of going from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, the ID.5 GTX is not so far from the performance of a Golf 8 GTI even if its all -wheel drive, its template and its price – out of penalty – more directly oppose it to the Tiguan R. Developed at a top speed of 180 km/h and relegated to more than a second on the 0 to 100, it is difficult for him to pretend to compete with his thermal “equivalent”, without however demerit on the plan of the approval. The generous and instant couple of electric motors remains a solid asset in terms of reminders and flexibility.
Just like on other ID models.5, ID training.5 GTX is provided by a 77 kWh lithium-ion battery (net battery capacity) promising a 489 km autonomy in WLTP. Its central position under the cabin guarantees a center of low gravity and a balanced distribution of the load on the axles. On the other hand, in terms of autonomy, the reserve of electrons still appeared a little just to calmly consider long family trips. With a little highway and a more dynamic driving than on a roller bench, we have noted an average electricity consumption of around 18 kWh/100 km, which corresponds roughly to that announced.
Recharge
ID battery.5 can be recharged at a maximum power of 135 kW instead of 125 kW; This saves up to 9 minutes of recharging time, starting from a 5 % charge state to a load of 80 %. This allows you to store in 29 minutes enough energy to travel 320 km for the ID.5 GTX, with a 36 -minute charging time. In addition, the new “Battery Care” mode optimizes the battery life. It limits the maximum load (SOC) to 80 % but with obviously a smaller autonomy.
ON THE ROAD
Whether they are propulsion or equipped with an electric all -wheel drive as is the case on the GTX variant, all IDs.5 offer comfortable and safe driving thanks to close interconnection of engine control units and rolling trains. The selection of the driving profile (standard) makes it possible to influence the operation of electric motors and management by choosing from several modes.
A rather pleasant progressive direction, moreover, because operating all the more directly as the steering wheel turning angle increases (option). In normal driving, the high weight of ID.5 is not really felt and the SUV even displays a certain agility, helped by its low gravity center. At the same time, electronically regulated shock absorbers (DCC, also optional), are responsible for erasing the faults of the road by always adapting the compromise between flexible driving and dynamic driving pleasure.
Does the ID.5 GTX can claim the same sports fiber as a current GTI ? To tell the truth, this is still far from being the case. Although very successful in terms of comfort compromise and body maintenance in curve, it is especially by the choice of its “eco” tires that we quickly find the limits of the ID.5 GTX in dynamic driving. With such a mass, even all-wheel drive fails to avoid the appearance of the understeer when applying too much constraint on the front axle, rejoice or tight curve inscription. It’s been a long time since we had the opportunity to hear tires express their pain as much ! Obviously, the Pirelli Scorpio gave hard to the couple and the mass in motion on this ID.5 And it is regrettable because it bridles the impulses of a motorcycle group in very pleasant, as on any electric torque full of torque.
Buy a Volkswagen ID.5 GTX
ID.5 GTX benefits from a privileged status in a category of “efficient” electric SUVs where competition is still rare. Faced with his technical twins Audi Q4 E-Tron 40 and Skoda Enyaq Coupé but also at the Ford Mustang Mach-E AWD, Volkswagen can afford to practice high prices. But at € 61,600, even if the standard equipment is quite complete, you may be more easily seduced by the Kia Ev6 AWD of 325 hp or the star of the segment, the Tesla Model Y whose higher autonomy can make a real difference. In any case, you will have to drive a certain number of kilometers before hoping to re -save real savings with this type of electric vehicle compared to a thermal or even hybrid model. The price of the energy transition.

CONCLUSION
Certainly very efficient, the Volkswagen ID.5 GTX suffers from a high weight and above all from a chassis too oriented on comfort and energy saving to really carry the values of sportiness. Nevertheless, if we refer to the original “GTX” spirit, namely a skillful mixture of luxury and dynamism, then the promise is rather respected. But do not expect an “electric GTI”, which may one day come.
