The answers to these questions will allow you to guide your choice.
Headphones to run and play sports
Perfect for staying focused, listening to your favorite playlist or the last podcast on running, wireless Bluetooth headphones have this advantage of being compact, discreet, and relatively autonomous. We can thus have them with you on all occasions. On the other hand, when it comes to playing sports, there are some constraints to take into account. First, the stability of headphones and their sealing. Here is our section dedicated to sports earphones.
There are many Types of headphones. They are now all sons without son. The time when it was necessary a jack 3.5mm to connect your headphones is over. From now on, it is rather the form of headphones that makes the difference. We distinguish thus:
- Headphones intro-dear (most products on the market) with the tip that is inserted into the ear canal;
- Headphones with Ear contour who have excellent support and very suitable for sport, but which lack a little discretion;
- Headphones at bone conduction, very practical on a daily basis;
- Possibly the headphones with noise reduction;
You will find below the tests Made on RUNMAG, as well as the various subjects and articles concerning sports headphones.
[Tests] The best headphones to run
All products, tested in the field and presented here, are designed to resist sweat and rain at least. All models of in-ear headphones are supplied with a game of tips of different sizes. We tested these devices according to their use in running, their autonomy but also their quality of audio restitution, because we love music ! Some models are also practical to use on a daily basis, outside the training sessions. So make your choice. And let yourself be surprised because there are good deals !
If you regularly practice sports activities, whatever they are, listening to the music or podcasts from your smartphone, forget the earphones delivered with the mobile. Keep them for daily use and turn to a model really intended for sport. They are designed to support not only dust and rain (more or less strong) but also the corrosivity of sweat. We have tested 14 sports headphones and headsets of various types and two helmets to travel: wired, wireless and totally wireless (“True Wireless”). The improvements made by certain manufacturers, and in particular with the True Wireless, are clear. Thus, certain faults noted in our file last year have been well corrected. And in general the headphones and helmets selected here deliver a sound of good, even, very high quality. Let the music!
With or wireless
The absence of friction points and noisy impacts of the threads on the chest who are annoying at times listening to his music, are among the big advantages of “True Wireless” headphones. But their major defect is still the fear of falling intras or an end of race in an inaccessible place, even their destruction. It happened to us, during a bike outing. The intra has fallen to the ground. Behind, the wheel of a car crushed it. But rest assured (a little): from experience, the fall of an intra most often arrives when I introduce or remove it from the ear. In general, during the race, it holds well, if it has been put in place beforehand.
With or without noise reduction
We are talking about active reduction, created electronically to more or less neutralize surrounding noise. Because any earpiece, and moreover intra-ear, has a passive reduction due to the partial obstruction of the sounds penetrating into the auditory duct. This active reduction can be a gadget, even a danger: in the first case when you run in a park or in the great outdoors, and in the second case when you evolve in town in the middle of cars, trucks and bikes. On the other hand, when these sports earphones are also used on a daily basis or on a journey, they can be useful, in public transport or in the open space of work.
Autonomy
The question of autonomy has become more crucial with the recent development of True Wireless, whose space reserved for battery in each intra is still reduced. For each of the wireless products, we have timed the autonomy with the volume adjusted to the maximum. In practice, with listening at moderate volume, the pleasure should therefore be lie down. Regarding the 100% wireless intras, we have calculated the autonomy of a single full recharge, knowing that the case, with its own battery, can generally regenerate intras at least two or three times.
Advice when choosing your wireless helmet: Prefer models with USB-C intake. You will be able to use the same charger as your smartphone if it is android recent. And above all, the USB-C allows fast or emergency recharge: plugged only for 5 minutes, the helmet can sometimes go back for at least one hour of use. It is practical when you realize, just before going to run, that your helmet has no battery.
Orders
In motion, during a race for example, it is even more annoying to have to do with headphones that are difficult to handle, with too small pimples or a recalcitrant touching interface to adjust the volume or pilot the reading. Orders’ efficiency must take precedence And this was an important criterion for us during the tests: we do not go out to run to take the lead with the orders. About the things that annoy us: the omnipresence on the headphones and helmets of an activation button on a voice assistant (Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa or Apple Siri). How many times, by mistake, for example we have launched a phone call! Annoying!
Shokz Openrun pro mini: reassuring
For those who do not support intras headphones, we have also selected this Shokz Open Mini Helmet. And you guessed it, it is a size version less than another helmet, OpenRun Pro, that we had presented in the previous file last year on the headphones. Its arch is shorter, but not much, the difference not exceeding 3 cm. Perhaps this model, a little smaller, will have a preference in some people. In any case, we found it very comfortable to wear. Contact with its coating is pleasant to the touch. He has excellent support in running. The three buttons allow a certain, fast, in short effective control, of the progress of a playlist. If as a model in model the audio quality of the shokz helmets (formerly aftershokz) improves, it remains lower than that of the intras, in terms of reproduction of the bass but even in clarity. But one of the major points of the Shokz helmets, including this Openrun Pro Mini, is obviously the transmission of sound to the inner ear through the cranial box. It is bone conduction that has the advantage of leaving the ears open to other external sounds, especially those of traffic. By running in town, you will not be in a bubble that would prevent you from hearing a danger to you. What to say more about this Openrun Pro Mini, except that it can operate continuously, volume to the maximum, for almost 3:50.
- The very pleasant port.
- Excellent outfit during the race.
- Attention allowed to the sound environment.
- The efficiency of audio controls.
We love less:
- Quality set back for listening to music.
Apple Airpods Pro (2nd generation): the reference
Apple applies to its airpods pro a method many times used with other of its devices: small touches improvement of a product which quickly imposed itself as undisputed leader in the market of intras headless headphones (so -called also “True Wireless”). For example, it is now possible to control the volume level from these 2nd generation AirPods Pro. Which was still the case already on most competing products … How to do so to increase or decrease the sound on these AirPods Pro 2: by touching up or down the rod of the right or left (this walk with both).
The charging box also has a speaker and is perforated with two holes at one end. It emits sound to allow its location if it is lost (using the iPhone which can also indicate the last recorded position of the case). And via the orifices, it is possible to attach it to a strap (not supplied), which makes it more practical transport.
More than once, we told you here that we had to avoid running with the (classic) airpods, if not on the track of a stadium, due to precarious support in the ‘ear, but you can always go there with less fear with the pro AirPods, including those of this new generation. Admittedly, these are not the best intras in this area but they hold the road correctly. And they always benefit from a pleasant port. The sound, too, is pleasant in the ear: audio restitution is balanced on all frequencies. It’s rather round, Apple apparently wanted to spare both the goat and the cabbage. These airpods still remain a reference at least for noise reduction: these are among the best intras for the ANC (Active Noise Cancelation) . This is really effective. Except in an exercise room, we do not really recommend that you use this current noise reduction, so not in the streets of a city (even if there is an adaptive functionality of the ANC on these airpods Pro 2).
These AirPods Pro 2, which are obviously resistant to sweat and water projection, like all other devices tested and presented here, have other major advantages. Their design, their convenience of use, the dimensions of their transport case (the least thick of the selection), their good autonomy (we measured about 8 hours per load, without the ANC with the volume set to the maximum, and more than 37 hours with the contribution of the case). And beyond the sports sessions, they are excellent intras for everyday life ! It remains to pay the price. In addition to that of the iPhone, the only smartphone with which AirPods are full of their potential.
- The effectiveness of noise reduction.
- Port comfort.
- The dimensions of the case.
- Audio restitution. The convenience of orders and use. Good autonomy.
- The possible location of the case.
- The possible attachment by Dragonne.
We love less:
- The price.
- Almost exclusivity to iPhone owners.

Jabra Elite 4 Active: calibrated
Its charging box is the one that comes closest to its dimensions of that of the AirPods Pro 2, even if it remains thicker. This pair of Intras Jabra Elite 4 Active headphones is aptly named. In the brand’s range, this reference effectively belongs to products intended for “active” use, in particular in sports. In running, intras hold well in the ear pavilion. Small detail, the facets shape of these intras facilitate the good taking of headphones. And this is not a detail, because, from experience, you certainly know that the intras fall when you take them with your fingers precisely. Also note, the very pleasant, even relatively soft coating, on the surface of these headphones. It is by pressing the button located in the face of each intra that we order the volume, the course of the reading tracks, the activation or not of the noise reduction, and possibly, if you find a utility, The launch of the vocal assistant. Overall, these commands are effective, as noted during the running test. A word on noise reduction, this is not the strong of these active elite 4. On the other hand, these intras, as often in Jabra, overall ensure good audio reproduction, without excess in the bass, nor notable or weakness in other frequencies. Autonomy is also satisfactory. We measured more than 5:30 am audio playback (volume to the maximum) for a single load of intras. And overall, as for AirPods Pro, these active Jabra Elite 4 intras are also practical in daily use, apart from training. With all these qualities, at this price, it is a good deal !
- Design and manufacturing quality.
- Effective commands.
- The good support.
- Audio quality.
- The relative compactness of the case.
- Good autonomy.
- The price.
We love less:
- Noise reduction.

Sennheiser Sport True Wireless: Big caliber
These intras sentences Sennheiser Sport True Wireless do not look like much. Their charging box, above all, seem to have at least a generation of delay in the chronology of design. And moreover what overweight ! With 41 mm thick ! It’s almost twice the thickness of the pro 2 airpods housing. It’s almost a cashier. A strap attached to him. That’s already won. These physical considerations apart, go run with the intras in the ear (after finding where to fit the body …). This is where these True Wireless sport show their multiple qualities. First of all the very good support. Here, at least, unlike the product of the competitor, the fins are really useful and help a little to improve the maintenance of intras in the auditory duct. The dimension of the intras themselves facilitate their grip.
The good surprise also comes from the great efficiency of orders to control the course of reading, as is volume control, and this via the sensitive pavement on each intra. Really, the answer is clear, fast when they are asked in full running with your finger. Well done ! And above all this, audio quality is up to what we could expect from a manufacturer such as sennheiser. The bass responds present without exaggerating, the sound remains clear, the whole is dynamic. A pleasure when you pay attention to the music. With its LG competitor, these are the best at the audio level in our selection of the day. In addition the autonomy is very comfortable: during our reading test with the volume to the maximum, the intras held around 8:30 am and 9:30 am per load, and in total, with the case, around 27 hours, therefore close to the manufacturer’s announcement. And these Sennheiser Sport True Wireless are not far from overthrowing the barrack with the price they display. Adjugated, it’s in the box !
- The very good audio quality.
- The great efficiency of orders.
- The good support.
- Good autonomy.
- The price.
We love less:
- The large thickness of the case.

LG Tone Free TF8: Aesthetics
The appearance of these LG intras is rather flattering. Tone Free TF8 has a good look, with among others their fins which strengthen their sporting character. They are well done to train, sweat and even sweat a lot. Indeed, if number of competitive intras are IPX5 or IPX6, therefore resistant to water projection, the LG TONE Free TF8 are labeled IP67: they are therefore designed to support dust but also total immersion in water , a meter. You can wash these intras after a sports session. Good point ! On the other hand, these fins, do not be mistaken. We have not found another useful than aesthetics. Unlike the brand’s speech, they are not effective in participating in the maintenance in the ear. They are too soft. The intras hold on their own well enough in the duct without their help. The port turned out to be comfortable during running outings. The controls involve contacts on the touch surface of each intra. Very good point, they can be personalized through the associated app. Fortunately, because we have not found the default mode effective to control the volume. One of the strengths of these LG Tone Free TF8 is audio quality: beautiful well -enveloping low frequencies, a clear and punchy sound. They almost compete with the sennheiser intras tested here.
LG delivers with its intras an accessory that can have its useful if you want to listen to music from a device without Bluetooth connection: a standard jack adapter in the form of a small cable. Think of the audio taking of certain TVs or radios, that of the armrest of an airplane seat on which we connect headphones distributed to watch an entertainment program. This is a good idea, because you will certainly have a better sound with these intras LG. Regarding autonomy, a full load provided a reading time, with a maximum volume, sometimes close to 8:00 am during a test, sometimes around 8:30 am during another test. In total, with the contribution of the case, always with the volume set to the highest, the calculated operating time has reached around 8:20 p.m. Note, in the housing, there are two UV LEDs whose function is to eliminate during the loading time of intras from bacteria at the end of the tips and on the internal fence. In addition to aesthetics, these intras would therefore be hygienic.
- The very good audio quality.
- Efficient and customizable commands.
- The comfortable port.
- The Jack audio intake adapter.
- The IP67 index.
We love less:
- The ineffectiveness of the fins in the maintenance.

Adidas RPT-02 Sol: Solar
This Adidas sports helmet looks like a previous model, the adidas RPT-01, tested in a previous file. A pretty aesthetics with its arch covered with fabric, just like the two pads. These remain removable and washable. Ditto for the strip plated under the hoop and which is in contact with the skull. As its name suggests, the adidas RPT-02 Sol is distinguished from the fact that it recharges in the sun (or any other sufficiently intense light) thanks to photovoltaic cells located above the Arceau. Admittedly, the helmet has a USB-C socket by which it will requin its battery in a conventional manner. Via a cable that is not provided in the box elsewhere. Adidas plays the eco-responsibility card, like some smartphones manufacturers who no longer put a charger in their box. The sports brand also indicates that 51 % of the helmet consists of recycled plastic.
Fun but also useful, it is possible to visualize live on the adidas app the electrical intensity (in ma) produced by light, that consumed by the helmet and also the loss or gain of energy resulting. Thus, under a strong light, the helmet battery can recharge. Slowly. We had the chance to test the helmet for a sunny day, the gain was very positive. But placed directly under a fiery sun, he can put on and stop his recharge. This is what we found during the test. And yet it was not very hot, no more than 40 °. The manufacturer indicates that it is necessary to avoid “exposing it for too long at temperatures above 55 ° C”.
In running this adidas RPT-02 Sol, like the previous helmet of the brand, was very effective in the control of the routing of music and volume, thanks to a small joystick placed on the right side. No headache, we are far from certain tactile commands sometimes capricious, here the helmet obeys orders. The sound is generally good, even if we could expect better on a helmet. By default, it lacks a bit of clarity and treble. Fortunately, the APPI equalizer gives more tone to sound. To work in a possible future version of this helmet.
- Very effective commands via the joystick.
- The upkeep.
- Solar recharging.
- Aesthetics.
- The removable washable parts.

How to choose your headphones to run ?
The particularities of headphones for sport
Even if it is theoretically possible to run with any pair of headphones, it is better to opt for a model specially designed for this purpose.
Indeed, the practice of running involves many rebounds, so it is important that your headphones remain in place and that they do not cause irritation. They must also resist perspiration. If you do outdoor outings, it is best to be able to hear the noises of your environment for your safety.
Finally, if some people are used to playing sports with wired headphones, most runners are embarrassed and prefer wireless headphones.
The different types of headphones to run
Running headphones are generally divided into three categories.
Intra-ear headphones
These are the most common. They have a tip that is inserted into the ear canal and are wireless. Generally, this allows good resistance, even in case of repeated shocks.
Earphones with earlines
On these models, there is also a tip to insert into your auditory duct. It is accompanied by an outline, generally silicone, to be placed over your ear. Most often, it strengthens the maintenance of your headphones and it therefore intensifies the comfort of the runner. However, some may be irritated by the material used.
Bone conduction headphones
Relatively recent, bone conduction technology is much appreciated by runners. These headphones are not placed in the ear, but at the level of the temples. The sound is transmitted by vibrations by the bones located in the cheekbones. The information is sent to the cochlea (the inner ear), bypassing the eardrum.
The big highlight of bone conduction headphones is that they allow you to listen to music or a podcast, but also to hear all the other noises around you. If you run in town, it is a guarantee of security, because it allows you to perceive sounds (cars, sirens, bicycle bells, etc.)).
Finally, some athletes use a helmet to run. Their use is not very advised for different reasons. First of all, they are quite heavy, which limits your comfort. The foams located around the ears enclose it, which generally causes perspiration fairly quickly. In addition to being unpleasant, it can damage them prematurely. Finally, helmets are most of the time not very water resistant, which is problematic if you sweat during your effort.
The criteria to take into account to choose the best pair
Now that you know the different types of running headphones that can be found on the market, here are the criteria on which you have to linger to make your choice.
Ergonomics and comfort
Your comfort is one of the key factors to consider to make your earphones to run. Indeed, if the ergonomics do not suit you, it could cause irritation or pain and make your exit unpleasant. Your pair should therefore not slide.
Water resistance
In order for your perspiration or the rain to have no negative impact on your sports earphones, it is important that they are resistant. The IP standard allows you to indicate the level of protection. The first figure indicates the level of protection against dust and the second against liquids. An IP75 certified product therefore has a level of protection of 7 against dust and 5 against water. If an X replaces a figure, it is that the product has not been tested for the characteristic in question. For example, an IPX5 certified model has unknown protection against dust and a level of 5 against humidity.
For information, a level of protection of 5 means that the headphones are resistant to water and projections. At 7, they can be immersed up to a meter deep for 30 minutes maximum. With 8 protection, the immersion depth can be even deeper.
Sound quality
Just because a pair of headphones is designed to run that she has to abandon the quantity of the sound she offers ! Many brands make it possible to link both.
You can find different audio signatures, with significant emphasis on bass, treble or balanced sound. Some models even allow the signature to be configured according to your own tastes.
Some headphones offer an active noise reduction function. This means that they isolate external sounds. If this is a very practical function for improving the sound quality you perceive, it can be dangerous if you run outside. This feature must be privileged if you do indoor sports, in an environment that has no risk.
Battery life
The headphones to run are often wireless and therefore need to be recharged regularly. The autonomy of your pair can be important if you are used to making long outings.
Advice to make your choice
Questions to ask
To choose from the different models of sports headphones that you can find on the market, it is important to start by defining your needs:
- Would you like a pair exclusively for your sports practice or do you want to use it in your daily life too ?
- Are you going to use them in the dining room or outdoors ?
- If you have already tried certain types of headphones, which are most suitable for your morphology ?
The answers to these questions will allow you to guide your choice.
Budget definition
It is also essential to define the budget that you are ready to allocate to this purchase. If it is normal not to want to give too much amount to your sports earphones, it is essential to keep in mind that the quality has a cost. Choosing a lasting model and perfectly suited to your needs is often more profitable than buying a first price pair and changing it every year.
Finally, try to compare products and prices to find the best possible offer.
You now know the essential criteria to take into account to choose your next pair of sports earphones. Our selection of the 5 best headphones to run should help you make your choice from all the models that exist on the market. Do not forget to take into account your needs and your safety.
