Google Pixel 6a Design

No doubt possible, the Google Pixel 6a has indeed part of the same siblings as the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. They are not twins, but family features are there. This new model does not make madness in terms of design and is part of the line of the visual identity carried by the brand since the second half of 2021.

This observation stands for itself as soon as you look at the back of the 6a pixel. We find this very special band which crosses the backwards horizontal at the camera level. The block is much less prominent than those of Pixel 6 or 6 pro, but it is still there. We like it or don’t like ? You know the song: everything is a matter of personal tastes.

What I can tell you is that it is quite disturbing to see such a wide strip to simply accommodate two photo modules and a flash. On the other hand, we also understand the will of the Mountain View firm to persist and sign with this design which allows it to stand out.

Besides, nothing to report particular on the finishes. These are of quality to offer a good feeling in hand. Weight and dimension of the 6a pixel

Beyond these few appetizers, we especially remember one thing: sobriety is the watchword of this pixel 6a. No frills, no extravagance. And above all, a contained format that will appeal to relatively small smartphones lovers. 152.2 mm height, 71.8 mm wide and 8.9 mm thick.

Without being the little thumb, it is clearly not in the trend of recent years which see smartphones that are ever greater being put on the market. This format is also accompanied by a fairly light weight of 178 grams.

So this is one of the great forces of Pixel 6a. Because we can imagine that the people potentially interested in this phone are, largely – or even in majority – the same who sulks the phablets to the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

It remains to choose your color well. For my part, I find that the dark gray model that Google has given us is too sad. What to say if not to finish this appetizer ? All the physical buttons (ignition and volume) are on the right slice, the punch for the front camera is centered and the nano-sim drawer is positioned on the left. On the lower edge, it is a USB-C connector that we find for recharging.

Finally, the Google Pixel 6a is certified IP67 which guarantees water resistance in the context of temporary immersion (less than a meter for 30 minutes maximum).

The Google Pixel 6A offers a 6.1 -inch OLED screen with a definition of 1080 x 2400 pixels (Full HD+) and a ratio 20: 9. Promising ? Beware, however, of a point: the phone does not make the effort to go beyond 60 Hz. The slab will therefore not offer little more appreciable for daily fluidity. It’s still a shame in 2022, even less than 500 euros.

Despite this, you will benefit from an excellent contrast (thanks to the OLED) and luminous slab. We measured a peak at 755 cd/m². It is very largely sufficient in the vast majority of situations. No concern to report on readability.

On the other hand, concerning the colorimetry, the choice of Google can cause a small debate. With our probe and the Calman Portrait Displays software, we could see that the phone preferred to display loyal and not sublimated colors, even if it is not to display as much as we could hope.

Let us first mention the average temperature measured at 6482 k. It is very close to the 6,500 k aims for a good balance between the blue and red tones. This result was obtained with adaptive mode in a classic work environment (open space with white lights on the ceiling).

I then tried the mode ” enhanced »Proposed in the settings and the temperature did not change much to reach 6549 k. In other words, even with the mode supposed to give a boost, the screen remains very moderate.

A good point which results in an average delta e on the DCI-P3 of 2.47. For this index, we generally try to descend as much as possible at 3 for good color fidelity. The 6a pixel will therefore go down below 3, which is very impressive.

However, this is not without consideration. Pixel 6a has trouble offering a wide range of colors. If it covers 114 % of the SRGB well, it is put in difficulty by the DCI-P3, a larger colorimetric space, and therefore more difficult to manage for a screen, with a “only” 77 % coverage.

The pixel 6a, however, prides itself on being HDR compatible and I must admit that, on the contents of this quality, I did not feel any particular frustration in terms of colors. So, unless you are one or a perfectionist, you should not be particularly embarrassed by the downsides mentioned.

On paper, the software part is one of the great qualities of the 6a pixel since we benefit here from the same experience as on the high -end models Pixel 6 and 6 pro. Android 12 is therefore in the game and is sprinkled with small interesting features here and there to simplify daily life.

Finally, we will salute the commitment of the five years of security patches on this 6a pixel and we can have hope that it will benefit from the major updates of Android for a long time. It will also be among the first to take advantage of Android 13 when the version is ready. Portrait mode, my love

In recent years, we know that one of Google’s photo assets on smartphone has been management of portrait mode. No need for a camera dedicated to depth management, good algorithms are enough. And those of the Mountain View giant are very efficient. They are found at work on the 6a pixel and it is a delight.

Be careful, as you can see in the photos of two friends below, some rebel locks can resist and stay vague when you could intuitively expect to see them clear. However, I see it rather as a relevant choice on the part of algorithms.

As part of my friend bearing a cap, the wick on his right ear (left for us) was undoubtedly deemed too complex to cut – especially since he went on purpose to move in all directions to put the pixel 6a in difficulty. And I prefer to see this more pleasant rendering for the eyes rather than a clumsy attempt at cutting which would most certainly have led to a half-clean, half-brush that makes teeth cringe.

The same comment applies for my friend who lifts his glass of beer on the camera. He has a cut with a bun at the back of the skull. The wicks that escape are therefore de facto in the background and their vague rendering is therefore not absurd.

You will note in passing that in some photos, the phone simulates a progressive blur in the background. It’s subtle, but pleasant. In short, the Google Pixel 6a honors its family with this portrait mode.

The night vision is yes

Let’s go to night photos. From the outset, it must be said, in 95 % of cases (ladle estimate with a wet finger by humming the air), you have to trust the camera’s night mode. This one is baptized night vision and certainly requires a longer exposure time to capture more light, but the result is worth almost systematically.
