Google Pixel 6 test: the return of the king’s photophone

Screen

The Pixel 6 has a very good screen, in continuity of what we found on the Pixel 5. If it is larger (6.4 inches, 2400 x 1080 pixels and ratio 19.5: 9), it retains OLED technology with a 90 Hz refresh rate adaptive.

By default, the display is not badly calibrated, but it is possible to get the most out of it by going to the settings. By choosing the “natural” color mode, we obtain a Delta E at 2.2 and a color temperature at 6716 kelvins; A value very close to the video standard (6,500 k).

The maximum brightness is quite low, especially in comparison with the pro version or even with the Pixel 5. We have noted a peak at only 484 cd/m², a value under our average. Too bad, especially since reflectance is not bad (47.5 %). At least, the slab can drop to 0.9 cd/m² by going to the accessibility settings. Perfect for reading in the dark without damaging your eyes.

OLED technology obliges, the contrast rate is infinite. The tactile delay was measured at 45 ms and the time of persistence is 0 ms.

Performance

Front module, portrait and video mode

The Pixel 6 has a high-angle before 8 megapixel sensor. It is therefore a little less defined than that of the pro version and, above all, does not benefit from the ultra-angle. Portrait mode, a real success on pixel, still works as well. With the main module, the subjects are very well detained and the final rendering is truly pleasant. By using 2x optical zoom, the results are variable. In low light, the clichés sometimes drool and grain can be visible. By day, that’s something else since the smartphone delivers excellent photos. At the front, the portrait mode is pleasant, but without having an ultra-wide-angle module, the phone often finds it difficult to cut more than one person-the second unfortunately appears blurred.

Autonomy

Pixel 5 has reclaimed Google smartphones enthusiasts by offering much more decent autonomy than that of previous models. We could have thought that the Pixel 6 would continue on this path with its 4600 mAh battery, but it is clear that a larger accumulator does not necessarily mean better autonomy. In fact, this pixel 6 manages to hold for 4 h 53 min before returning the soul. A loss of 2 hours of autonomy compared to Pixel 5, which can be explained in particular by the fact that the Google Tensor (the home house of Google) heats up when it is requested.

For recharging, Google joins Apple and Samsung and no longer offers a block in its box, but provides a USB-C to USB-C cable. The Pixel 6 accepts a maximum load up to 30 W with the Google block sold separately. Not having on hand, we used a charger equipped with Power Delivery technology (PD) to obtain the most powerful load. The Pixel 6 found all its battery in 1 h 52 min, which is quite long compared to the competition.

The Pixel 6 can also load unwanted at 21 W with the 2nd generation pixel stand. Without him, the smartphone accepts only 12 W. The inverted wireless load is also on the program.

I’ve been using a pixel 6 for a daily basis and I would have trouble getting started with it. Here is my detailed opinion after a long -lasting test.

Last October, Google launched its Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, phones that marked a real turning point in the philosophy of the brand after years of more or less successful wanderings and trial and error. It was a real critical and commercial success – all kept proportions, but in any case a success on Google scale. But time has punctuated this vision with the appearance of many bugs identified by users and users.

However, after 9 months of use and almost no bug met, I still like my pixel 6 as much.

I have always liked Google smartphones

To replace the context, I always liked Google’s experience. I am one of those people who swore by the Nexus in the great era of LG (Nexus 4 and Nexus 5), despite the battery problems and a poor photo quality. I subsequently appreciated the pixel and I was in particular in spite of me an excellent salesperson for the brand when it was a question of advising a 3A or 4A pixel to my loved ones, always delighted with this advice.

It was really with the 4 XL pixel that I fell in love. He was heavy, full of faults, but you have to have it to understand how much he offered a fluid and different experience. It is therefore not very surprising that I appreciate the Pixel 6, despite certain reluctance at the time, and that I recommend the Pixel 6A to whoever wants to hear it.

A design…

To my taste, three points are important on a smartphone. First of all, autonomy. Because a phone, however good it is, if it goes out at 4 p.m., will remain a unnecessary brick. Then the general experience, the fluidity, the interface, the quality of the screen, the handling and finally the quality of the photos.

I will come back to autonomy and photo quality, but let’s dwell on the global experience starting with its design which made me prefer this pixel 6 to Pixel 6 Pro. I can’t stand curved screens and see Geoffroy’s return on the subject, the pro is a ordeal at this level. In addition, I have trouble with phones that exceed 200 grams. The Pixel 6 already weighs 207 grams, I did not want to go up beyond, too bad if it made me lose the telephoto lens.

Aside from this detail, the design of the Pixel 6 did not shock me, unlike others who vilified its horizontal photo module. Its real problem is not so aesthetic as it is practical: not only its angles represent dust nests, but its slices end up whitening by dint of shock and friction. In nine months, the whole manager has tended to spend up. I confess to be resistant to the shells and have dropped it a few times by clumsiness, but other phones are much more resistant to this level.

In short, you will understand, it is not for its design that I like the Pixel 6.

He only misses the fast charge

So let’s take the crucial points starting with the autonomy. At this level, the Pixel 6 is very impressive, even nine months later. Apart from a few days when I felt a strange battery drain that probably came from mismanagement of the cache of an application, the battery of the Pixel 6 never made me lack. My use is rather important and yet I have never been afraid of the breakdown in the event of the evening exteriorizing. For example, it is 6:40 p.m. when writing these lines, I disconnected my phone while wake up this morning and I have 80 % battery left. So certainly, I only really used it about 2:30 a.m. during the day, but it remains impressive and it allows me to stay serene in all circumstances.

In fact, the fast charge has rarely missed me. I would not spit on a load at 60 W or more (against 30 W announced by Google), but that would only fill a very punctual lack. I finally relearned to load my phone at night, today’s smartphones managing this so as not to tire the battery.

A pleasant interface

Now concerning the experience in itself and the interface of the pixel. I must admit that certain Android 12 points always frustrate me, starting with the quick parameter ” Internet »Which still brings together mobile data and Wi-Fi, adding a click to really access it. The disappearance of the Android 11 power menu also.

But apart from that, Pixel Experience (Google’s interface) brings me everything I want with great fluidity. I’m still lucky to have absolutely never suffered the many bugs encountered by others with their pixel, it’s apparently a real Russian roulette ..

Small details like the Widget seen (At a glance), instant subtitles, music recognition that is done on the lock screen without having to ask for it … are all small elements that make the experience of something unique. It is not for lack of having used Oppo, Samsung, OnePlus and even Apple in the past year; Those from Google have this extra little thing that works with me.

Call me for your photos of evenings, weddings, bar-mitzvah…

But let’s talk about what, in my opinion, really makes the difference with the Pixel 6: the photo. In its long -lasting test of the Pixel 6 Pro, Geoffroy indicates that it is disappointed by the photo and cites in particular smartphones which now have larger sensors. Technically, surely, this is an advantage. But in fact, even with a sensor of an inch, with the small objectives which equip the current phones, the algorithms still represent a huge part of the quality of the photo.

So yes, on a landscape, even at night, the competition has largely caught Google, and the gap is no longer as stunning as it was. However, there remains an area in which the artificial intelligence of pixel remains unbeatable: the targets in moving in low light. If you are used to playing photographers from your evenings, you know how difficult it is to get a successful photo spent a certain hour. Likewise, if you have an animal or a young child that it is difficult to have, the pixel remains very strong.

It’s very simple, I no longer count the number of times in a year when someone jealous of the photos that my phone is able to take. An end of the show, an animated family photo, a dab Fast, an expression of furtive joy, a stolen hug, people far too happy or a flash that tears the sky … To succeed in such a photo, you will not need to think for hours. Point, click, your photo is successful. Even the iPhone, however among the best to freeze a scene, does not arrive at the ankle of the pixel at this level.

Note that a large part of the above photos were taken in difficult light conditions forcing to use a long installation, and with subjects generally moving quickly.

So yes ! The Pixel 6 does not have an optical zoom, it is not the smartphone with the best dive, but no doubt, it is the one that will allow you to photograph your best memories. And when we bring it all at its ultra competitive price, it is difficult not to advise this pixel warmly … crossing your fingers so that you avoid bugs.

Pixel 6 and 6 pro test, they are still worth it in 2023 ?

After an announcement full of promises, here is our test of the Google Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6. Can the US firm standard smartphones compete with Samsung, Apple or Oppo including in early 2023 ?

Our Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro test – smartphones that we really expected a lot when they released as the Pixel 4 and Pixel 5 had left us a mixed impression. What is the design of the Pixel 6 ?

Officially presented during an online event, we already knew almost everything through rumors. If they have been presented in different colors, only the black version of the Pixel 6 Pro will be available for now. The Google Pixel 6 is available in black version and in gray ocean version.

When we wrote this Pixel 6 test and discovered smartphones for the first time, we were surprised by their resolutely different design, especially in the back and their photo block. The latter is a width -width sensor bar. We do not know if there is a technological reason behind this design choice or not, but that has at least the merit of giving character to this generation. If we undoubtedly prefer the frosted glass of the old design because of our fear that the new brand too much fingerprints, we see that the shiny back of the Pixel 6 is not really touched by the problem.

Front front, it’s quite classic since we find screens with a punch at the top in the center and an optical fingerprint sensor under the screen. Nothing revolutionary in itself, it is archi-classical. On the Pixel 6, the edges are not particularly fine but they have the advantage of being of the same thickness all around the screen: it is stupid but it is one of the few to offer this. Under the screen, there is a optical fingerprint sensor which is not necessarily as fast as the physical sensor on the back of the Pixel 5 but enough not to disturb the user on a daily basis.

In any case, you will not be able to blame Google for having taken risks. The pixel 6 in no way resemble their predecessors or their rivals. With an almost size weight and screen size, they are certified IP68 and the grip is identical, whether on the Pixel 6 Pro or the Pixel 6. We appreciate that Google has respected our pockets of pants, remaining around 210 g for weight. We remind you that the iPhone 13 Pro Max weigh 240 g.

In addition, the design of design is excellent: Google competes here with any high -end smartphone competitor on the market. After Pixel 6 and 6 Pro test, we still regret that the brand does not offer an alternative color with brushed glass back which in our opinion has more cachet. But we still appreciate that Google knew how to keep a discreet rendering without giving in the mirror side like some competitors.

While choosing a special material which actually marks very little fingerprints. Finally, we find the volume buttons and the switching button on the right edge, which releases the left edge. On the other hand, as every year, we would have liked to have the watch button at the bottom and not at the top of the volume buttons, like the other smartphones on the market.

What is the screen of the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 PRO worth ?

We will note in our Pixel 6 Pro test, that the screen is slightly curved on the edges, which allows you to have a ratio and what is not the case with the Pixel 6.

In all cases, the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6 offer an OLED panel. Unsurprisingly, they are very well balanced. We therefore recover excellent colorimetry with an excellent contrast and deep blacks. Android 12 again offers three color modes: natural, enhanced and adaptive.

By default, it is in adaptive mode and therefore with more pronounced contrasts. Now, if we want to have a flatter colorimetry, we will have to switch to natural mode. In our Pixel 6 test, the brightness is sufficient and we had no particular concerns during a use in the middle of the day, even sunny.

The Google Pixel 6 has a 90 Hz refresh rate like its predecessors. It is faster than the standard 60Hz elsewhere and it results in increased comfort and smoother animations. No everyday revolution either in absolute terms but the comfort gain is always appreciable. On the other hand, we have not found the ambient EQ technology of Pixel 4, similar to True Tone at Apple which allows you to adapt the temperature of the screen to wedge the environment.

During the Pixel 6 Pro test, a 120 Hz refreshment rate was noted and LPTO technology which allows you to adapt the frequency of the screen as a function of uses. As a reminder, the Pixel 6 Pro can lower the refresh rate to 10 Hz to save battery.

Finally, there are stereos speakers that are good overall. These are not the references on the market but it will have no trouble enjoying internet content without going through the helmet box or headphones. As usual, for longer content, we will necessarily favor a helmet or at least, the original headphones.

What is the duration of support for Android updates ?

In our Pixel 6 test we see that smartphones run at the base on Android 12 (they are compatible with the Android 13 update): we will not come back on it since it is not a real novelty in itself. It’s just that the launch of the Pixel 6 takes place at the same time the final version of Android 12. The fact remains that Google took the opportunity to add a good number of functions of the most useful and which place the Pixel 6 above the Android melee.

We start with the material design which is omnipresent on the Pixel 6 and which we recognize at the first glance, especially in relation to the rivals with their overlay (and often a most classic design). One of the things we appreciated and that cannot be seen at first, it is the color themes that adapt to wallpapers. It’s subtle but really appreciable and more immersive.

We find the search on the whole smartphone from a simple gesture from the top of the screen. Research can be done on applications, registered people, shortcuts, actions, settings, tips, etc. It may not be much but the pixel 6 bring a fingerprint sensor under the screen, it is not the fastest but it makes the job.

The Google assistant is always more powerful and precise, you can really use it to dictate your text and it is a appreciable function. We were able to test it that in English and we impatiently await the French version. On the other hand, the brilliant dictaphone of Google is now available in German, French and Japanese. Also, everything you save can be transcribed into text. Need to tell you that for us journalists, during interviews, it has become an almost essential tool.

As a background, in messaging applications such as Android messages, WhatsApp, Signal, Twitter or Instagram, it is possible to use the Live Translate function that instantly translates. Practical. Languages ​​at the moment supported are English, French, German, Italian and Japanese (in beta). This is not new but the Live Translate function is also available from the photo application via Google Lens.

Besides the new photo functions that we will describe a little lower, Google offers a dashboard to manage your privacy since the user will have a complete vision of access and other authorizations: location, camera or microphones. Note a part linked to personal security which makes it possible to define the emergency numbers and the shortcuts in case.

What are the performance and autonomy of Pixel 6 and 6 Pro ?

On the performance side, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro for the first time embark on a SOC entirely designed and developed by Google. Exit therefore the Soc of Qualcomm. Here is the Google Tensor that equips new Google smartphones. Dixit the latter, it is 80% more performance in CPU and 370% more in GPU compared to Pixel 5 which was equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765g. Before we talk about benchmarks, we are just going to talk about the user experience.

Whether on the Pixel 6 with a 90 Hz screen or on the Pixel 6 Pro with a 120 Hz screen, the user experience is perfectly fluid. Apart from a few applications that use Google Tensor thoroughly, 99 % of daily uses are perfectly covered both in terms of fluidity and reactivity.

Overall in our Pixel 6 test, so we have not noted any particular problem for use, we used the Pixel 6 with a substantial number of applications and we did not feel discomfort or slowdown. The smartphone does not normally heat (except for gourmet applications such as games).

Regarding the benchmarks, we had a few crashes since the SoC is brand new. It is very likely that benchmarks are not yet optimized for Google Tensor. The fact remains that results that we obtained in our test, and if we rely on the figures, the Google Tensor is at the level of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888. It is very good and that explains why Google communicates on such a difference in power between the Pixel 5 and the Pixel 6.

For once, the Pixel 6 are doing very well on the autonomy. While the Pixel 6 offers a battery of 4,610 mAh and the Pixel 6 PRO a 5,000 mAh battery, we reach an entire and complete day without difficulty. Being careful, you can easily last two days. For example, the day when we did all the benchmarks, we also took the opportunity to test the games with the Nacon MG-R controller in Bluetooth, we ended our day with more than 50% battery still and more 7 hours of screen time on the Pixel 6 Pro.With a 90Hz screen, the Pixel 6 even allows itself to be slightly better for once.

What impressed us the most is that despite the new sensor, Google does not fail to reputation and there is no doubt that Google will succeed in refining all of this over time.

Google’s main camera is so reliable that it is difficult to take both google smartphones in default. The exposure and the white balance are mastered, just like the colors. We can really draw one of the two Pixel 6 and trust them 100%. Last year, we found that the ultra-angle of the Pixel 5 was behind. Suddenly, this year, reducing the focal length of the ultra-angle of Pixel 6, Google has improved the quality of the lens, which allows to have much more details on the photos.

On the Pixel 6 Pro, there is also a periscopic zoom which allows you to have a 4x optical zoom and above all, this allows you to extend the Super Res Zoom technology at 20x. We can tell you, it’s impressive. In 4x, it’s already impressive because it allows the photo block to be super versatile but with super res zoom technology, it’s just amazing given the quality of the shots. We let you judge.

Next to it, there is a night mode that can be activated automatically depending on the light. Over the years, Google has somewhat changed its algorithms for less artificial results, and closer to reality – but there are still clichés a little too cold for our taste. We note as a bonus a difference in exposure and white balance when the Pixel 6 uses Super Res Zoom technology (x2 or x5+).

Google continues to refine its portrait mode which is becoming more and more effective. We also find AF follow -up, always as practical to follow a subject, the Top Shot function that detects movements and allows himself to take a burst to allow the user the best photo afterwards.
