Samsung Galaxy S10: release date, price, characteristics and new features, the big recap ’

The Galaxy S10 arrived on February 20 and Samsung desperately needed that it is a success. As the largest manufacturer of phones in the world, Korean has a lot to do for this 10th generation of its Galaxy S.

A choir of analysts and experts painted the image of a galaxy S10 full of potentially extraordinary characteristics, including an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor and an infinity-o edge screen and … they were right. The Galaxy S10 could thus reconnect with the great successes of yesteryear – and ensure its place at the top of a very disputed ranking.

The path is however strewn with pitfalls. The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus, launched last February, did not sell particularly well. The slowdown in phones sales is now a threat to all brands. And the Chinese manufacturer Huawei, who ousted Apple to take second place, exerts increasing pressure on Samsung. Despite his own problems, including growing hostility of governments in the United States and around the world, Huawei continues to stimulate sales thanks to innovative products such as Mate 20 Pro.

In addition, there are two emerging technologies that promise to modify the short -term smartphones landscape. Samsung fights against LG, Huawei and others to be the first to market a foldable phone. And all phone manufacturers rush to produce devices that can take care of 5G. Models should be presented at the 2019 MWC. Samsung, however, had the merit of launching hostilities with its Galaxy Fold and the 5G version of S10.

Here we recap all the useful information on the Galaxy S10 family.

Galaxy S10: The summary of rumors

For posterity, we leave below the many rumors that preceded the launch of the Galaxy S10. Last update: 02/18/19

Make the dif ’video by video

Samsung seems to have put the package on the photo part, for the first time on a smartphone, the S10 would be able to record videos with the HDR10+ standard and it could also be the first device to be able to capture 4K videos with the camera frontal.
The photo application would be capable of advising the user and directing it to the Grand-Angle sensor in order to improve images taking. Another important point, the “Super-Slow Mode” function which allows you to record videos at 960 images per second on the Galaxy S9 will go from 720p to Full HD 1080p.

The To To

A version called “Luxurious Ceramic” with 1 TB of storage and 12 GB of RAM would be on the program. We imagine that the price of this model should fly away and reach new heights. Samsung has been looking for several years to forge legitimacy in the high -end. This version of the Galaxy S10 may well be the solution.

In Wi-Fi AX

A document transmitted to the FCC, the American telecommunications gendarme, mentions the support of Wi-Fi 6 by the Galaxy S10, at least for the American terminals equipped with a Snapdragon 855, but there is no reason that the exynos versions do not also benefit. As a reminder, this new 802 standard.11AX of its barbaric name has the main novelties a lower energy consumption, and makes it possible to reach theoretical flows greater than 10 GB/S. The standard should popularize in the second half of the year and especially in 2020.

A first bench

With the Galaxy S10, Samsung will launch a new generation of processor. A benchmark of a numbered Samsung SM-G975G terminal (the Galaxy S10+) and produced using the Geekbench tool appeared in the listings. It shows a completely honorable score of 10387 in multi-core mode, the latter remains slightly below an iPhone XS and its A12 Bionic chip which exceeds 11,000 points, but it is also almost 2000 points of More than the Galaxy S9+. The tested terminal has 6 GB of ram.

Another photo

A new photo of the Galaxy S10+, this time called “press”, appears on the web. Nothing new to put in the tooth, but it perfectly online with what we have seen previously.

The images of the Galaxy S10, in detail

Like every year, we wonder what Samsung will be able to tell us at his conference on the presentation of the Galaxy S10 as rumors are intensifying and gaining precision. New images show every detail of the next Korean smartphones. We find the Infinity-O screen that we had discovered for the first time during the “Samsung Developer Conference” last November, the double front sensor of the S10+, the Polite Metal Borders Iphone XS, everything is there ..

And now prices ?

An Italian site would have got hold of the price grid of S10E, S10 and S10 Plus. The Galaxy S10 E would be offered at 779 euros, the “classic” S10 would be between € 929 and € 1179 (a sharp price compared to the Galaxy S9 which started at € 859) while the S10 Plus would display a basic price From € 1049 and up to 1600 € in its most richly storage version (compared to € 959 in entry ticket for S9 Plus).

Double or triple

An image published by the famous Evleaks would accredit the three versions of the S10, namely the S10 E, S10 and S10 Plus. If the design is similar, there are some differences in particular in terms of photo sensors. If we believe this Leak, the S10 E (entry -level) would have a double sensor on the back while the S10 and S10 Plus would have a triple.

The S10 takes the bus

A photo of a supposed S10 was taken on a bus. The smartphone is hidden by a protective shell, however some elements suggest that it is indeed the new flagship of Samsung. We can clearly distinguish the presence of an “infinity-o” screen with very fine borders and a cut in the upper right corner to integrate the double photo sensor. Above all, we find the interface and the traditional Samsung navigation buttons on the lower part of the screen.

An overview of the design

It is through an accessorist, as often, that a supposed image of the final design appears on the web. It gives us an idea of the design of the three models. The menu is such that seen previously: very reduced edges and punctured screen.

3+1

According to the Wall Street Journal, Samsung will launch four models of S10 in total. The first three would be marketed in March, then another 5G compatible which would arrive a little later.

Date of presentation and release

Everything suggests that the launch of the Galaxy S10 will take place on February 20, followed by a sale on March 8. If this is the case, the Galaxy S10 would be presented on Wednesday before the kickoff of the mobile World Congress in Barcelona. We have not yet heard of the place of the next Samsung event, but New York or Barcelona are two potential candidates. If this timing is confirmed, Samsung will undoubtedly keep the launch of its next foldable phone “Galaxy F” for the MWC, a few days later

Three Galaxy S10, Plus Models and Lite

According to the rumor, the Galaxy S10 would arrive in three configurations.

  • Galaxy S10: named Code Beyond 1, this model would be the same size as the Galaxy S9, but with even thinner borders. We expect it to have a 6.1 inch screen and a front camera.
  • Galaxy S10 Plus: possibly named Beyond X or Beyond 2, would be the successor to the Galaxy S9 Plus. It would have a larger screen-perhaps 6.4 inches-and up to four rear cameras, two front cameras and a large battery. Despite some rumors on the support of 5G, we think it is unlikely.
  • Galaxy S10 Lite: it could be a smaller and less expensive device, with a 5.8 -inch screen. He could bear the code name Beyond 0, a kind of competitor of the iPhone XR. Other rumors indicate the presence of a flat screen (instead of being bent) the absence of fingerprint reader under the screen and no jack headphone jack.

And the foldable galaxy ?

Samsung presented a foldable phone during its annual conference of developers in November. It should be presented in the first quarter of 2019. Samsung should differentiate the launch of new S10s and F (for “crazy”) so as not to cannibalize sales and media attention. Samsung has undertaken to release four 5G phones in 2019, but the Galaxy S10 should not have this technology.

Upward prices ?

Samsung is ready to follow the example of Apple and increase the prices of its next generation of Galaxy S. According to Gizmodo UK, the Galaxy S10 Lite (entry -level version) could start at € 740 with 128 GB of storage. Here is an overview of price rumors for each model and each level of storage, on the basis of the prices (in sterling pounds) presented by Gizmodo:

  • Galaxy S10 Lite, 128 GB: 739 €
  • Galaxy S10, 128GB: € 899
  • Galaxy S10, 512GB: 1099 €
  • Galaxy S10 Plus, 128 GB: 999 €
  • Galaxy S10 Plus, 512gb: € 1219
  • Galaxy S10 Plus, 1 TB: 1549 €

An fingerprint reader under the screen ?

Qualcomm has announced that its SNAPDRAGON 855 SOC will support players of fingerprints with ultrasound fingerprints integrated into the screen. Samsung should use this technology on its Galaxy S10. Footprint sensors with ultrasound promise to read your imprints with precision and safely through water and dirt. We have seen this development technology for years and it promises to be very promising.

A total of six cameras ?

The high -end version of the Galaxy S10 could be equipped with six cameras. Four back and two at the front. We would end up with a high angle camera, an optical zoom, a monochrome and a classic sensor.

Samsung one ui

Samsung has confirmed to Cnet that all future phones, including the foldable version, will use the new one UI interface. The design of the One UI interface is made to facilitate use with a hand. It will work with Android Pie, the ninth version of Google’s mobile software, but not with the previous versions of Android.

The Galaxy S10 and S10+ are available in 5 variants: Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, Galaxy S10E, Galaxy S10 Performance and S10 5G. The standard S10 has a Super Amoled 5.8 ″ screen and the S10+ 6.2 ″. The Galaxy S10 Lite has no curved screen on the sides – but a flat slab, for the first time on a high -end Samsung smartphone from the Galaxy S7.

SOC, RAM, storage, autonomy

What performances expect ? No doubt the best on the Android market when it was released. The Galaxy S10 and S10+ carry the latest generation of SOC Qualcomm and Samsung. In the United States, and in some parts of the world, the S10 runs under Snapdragon 855. But in France we are entitled, as it is customary, to an exynos. This year it is the exynos 9820, the first of the brand engraved in 8nm (against 7nm for the Snapdragon 855).

This engraving finesse makes it possible to place more transistors in a limited space, but also to reduce energy losses. This combination of power and energy efficiency should give it an increase in the theory. Although it remains to be demonstrated. Depending on the variants, this SOC will be accompanied by 4 GB, 6 GB, 8 GB or even downright 12 GB of RAM. With internal storage options ranging from 128 GB to 1 to.

Here is the list of storage and RAM options of the Galaxy S10:

  • Galaxy S10 Lite/E : 4 GB RAM and 128 GB of internal storage
  • Galaxy S10 : 6 GB RAM and 128/512 GB of internal storage
  • Galaxy S10+ : 6/8 GB RAM and 128/512 GB of internal storage
  • Galaxy S10+Performance : 12 GB of RAM, 512/1000 GB of internal storage
  • Galaxy S10+ 5G : 8/12 GB RAM and 512/1000 GB of internal storage

The new SOCs bring compatibility to UFS 3 in passing.0. This transfer protocol exploded the bandwidth of internal memory, up to 2900 MB/s theoretical, against up to 1200 Mb/s for UFS 2 standards.0 and 2.1 or 300 Mb/s for UFS 1 standards.0 and 1.1. Whatever your choice when purchasing, it will always be possible to extend the internal memory of the smartphone using a microSD card.

In addition, the capacity of the batteries of the Galaxy S10 is known: 3000 mAh for the S10E, 3400 mAh for the S10 and a generous 4100 mAh for the S10+.

Screen

Samsung has always been constant in its technological choices on its flagships. This is thus one of the rare manufacturers not to have given in to the mania notch in the wake of the release of the iPhone X – at least on the very high -end. On the contrary, the manufacturer has preferred on its range to bet on its excellent Infinity Display screens, themselves inherited from curved screen technologies developed from the Galaxy S6 Edge. However, very recently, Samsung presented new types of screens to its developers.

Some with a (small) notch. Rest assured: there is no question that the S10 and S10+ have a notch. On the other hand, they have infinity-o screens. In other words screens with a hole. This allows Samsung to integrate one or more selfie photo sensors on the front, while pushing the borderless limits with a particularly advantageous screen/smartphone ratio. We had already seen the effect of this hole on the general experience with the Honor View 20. This solution is much more pleasant than a notch when reading multimedia content.

But purists certainly risk regretting the visual experience without obstruction of the Infinity Display screens of the Galaxy S8 and S9. In addition, the standard S10 has a circular hole, while the S10+ has an oval hole allowing to integrate two photo sensors instead of a single.

Safety and biometric sensors

The variants with infinity-o screen (the S10 and S10+) have an integrated fingerprint sensor under the slab. This has a particularity: it is the first on a high-end smartphone to operate with ultrasound. Integrating a sensor under the screen is a real technological challenge. Won by competition with optical sensors. A technology that is far from perfect: most screen protection are for example incompatible with optical devices.

In addition, the latter have already made the headlines due to a big security fault: by placing a reflective material on the sensor, researchers showed that the sensor of many manufacturers was unlocked. The reason ? The reader is then able to read the residual imprint on the glass reflected by the material ! Another grievance against them is that they are relatively slow. And can be capricious in case of moist hands or wet fingers.

Sensor technology of S10 and S10+ is based on ultrasound. The sensor will be provided by Qualcomm, which has been developing this technology for several years. The S10E, for its part, will have an ultrasonic sensor on the edge and not under the screen. Finally, because of the new Infinity-O screens, Samsung is forced to reduce the number of sensors as much as possible on the front panel. There is no longer an iris sensor, as was the case on previous iterations. On the other hand, the smartphone always offers the Face Unlock.

Photo sensors

Computational photography has made progress. And a particular Samsung competitor, has taken a considerable lead for almost a year now. We want of course to talk about Huawei with his P20 Pro and his Mate 20 Pro. Their particularity ? They rely on three photo sensor which allows a super-sample of images, and, via recognition of objects and people, and a hint of machine learning, generate breathtaking shots, even in low light conditions.

So Samsung goes over its S10s from two main sensors to three. Like the Galaxy S9, there is a double opening sensor, f/1.5 to f/2.4 of 12 Mp and another Grand Angle from 123 ° to 16 Mp and opening F/1.9. The 10th is content with a double sensor. At the front, infinity-o screen requires, the S10 will have a 10 mpx f/1 selfie camera.9. As for the S10 +, it benefits from a double 10 MP + 8 MP sensor.

In all cases, selfie sensors are able to film in 4K at 60 frames per second with optical stabilization and HDR. .

Integrated crypto wallet, reverse wireless recharge, WiFi 6…

We also learned that the Galaxy S10 is equipped with a cryptocurrency portfolio to protect its bitcoin, ethereum or other currency with as much security as solutions like Ledger Nano S – and above all an increased increased use. In addition, like the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, the Galaxy S10 is equipped with reverse wireless charging, which allows you to recharge another Qi compatible phone.

It is also equipped with WiFi 6, also known the sweet name of 802.11ax. This new standard makes it possible to multiply by 4 the bandwidth by user in dense environment, with up to more than 1Gb/s descendants. Moreover, Samsung keeps the Jack Audio port once again, phew !

Android 10 update

The Galaxy S10, S10+ and S10 are all sold with Android 9 Pie and the Samsung overlay. But the Korean manufacturer has already started tests to offer the ONE UI 2 update.0 with Android 10 on the entire range. For the moment, beta is only available in South Korea, on all smartphones in the range except for the 5G declination. But we expect the beta program to be quickly available in other countries. We also note that the note 10 which has just just out does not receive, for the time being, from any beta program.

What the design of the Galaxy S10 looks like ?

The Galaxy S10 and S10+ adopt a more angular look than the S9 – almost as if they held more heirs of the Note range. The S10E is flat but has tangy colors including a yellow color. In general, we recognize the paw of the S range: huge screen with rounded and curved edges, no notch, a rounded slice and a glass back with photo sensors centered horizontally.

The upper speaker is elegantly hidden between the screen frame and the smartphone chassis. The screen holes will be located at the top right. And do not expect a border or regular or symmetrical: the edges are finer on the right and left slices, and they have a “chin” (the name of the black band on the lower part) thicker than the border on the top of the screen. Nevertheless, in all cases, we can say of all these borders that they are extremely fine. More, in any case than those around the S9 screen.
