Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra test: a waterproof tablet all in power

Writing note: 5 out of 5

If it does not drastically change the situation compared to the 2022 ultra tab S8, the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra reports Samsung’s know-how on the tablet market. But is it good enough to pretend to replace completely the experience offered by a PC ?

Presentation

Samsung has set foot in the world of very large format tablets with its new ultra range. Models adopting a slab as large as that of laptops while spreading the Korean know-how in terms of tablets. And the firm was not mistaken, since its product met with some success, dragging 30 % of its sales of touch tablets in 1 year.

A success that she hopes again to implement with her Tab S9 Ultra, which does not turn upside down what has been established, but which improves it on certain points. This tablet remains as expensive as a PC, since its price starts at € 1349 in 256 GB version. Count 150 € more for 512 GB and € 1749 to benefit from 1 TB of storage. Such a launch price makes the Lenovo Tab Extreme its most serious competitor.

Ergonomics

You remember the imposing dimensions of the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra ? Well, keep them in mind, since this ultra galaxy Tab S9 is a faithful reproduction. Same size for a weight, however, more than 10 g (738 g on the scale). The design evolves slightly, since we spot on the back of the photo modules integrated in the same way as those of smartphones in the Galaxy S23 range. But overall, Samsung does not upset the situation if we compare his model to that of last year. In fact, we invite you to refer to our test of the previous model, to find out more about the ergonomics of this ultra galaxy Tab S9:

Test: touch pad
Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra: the attack on a titan

Samsung develops its range of touch pads: on the sidelines of its S8 and S8+models, inherited from the Galaxy Tab S7 series, the manufacturer Cor.

A novelty however deserves to be underlined, and not the least: the South Korean company has decided to offer an IP68 standard to its tablet-as well as to the other two other Galaxy Tab S9, but also to the S Pen stylus which accompanied. If we put aside the market of reinforced tablets, it has been a long time that a manufacturer had not dared to include waterproofing on the technical sheet of a general public tablet. Sony had tried the experience in the early 2010s with its Z range, but nothing had been released since. Anyway, the new Samsung model can now be used everywhere, why not in a bath or by the pool.

Screen

The slab of the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra displays the same diagonal as the previous model. We thus find a beautiful 14.6 -inch screen which adopts Dynamic Amoled X2 technology instead of Super Amoled, promising better contrasts. What we will not fail to check just below. For the rest, adaptive refreshment is always 120 Hz and HDR10+ compatibility remains on the menu.

By default, and as on the manufacturer’s smartphones, the display is not very well calibrated. It is therefore necessary to take a look in the settings and select the “natural” color mode. This is done, the color temperature goes from 6919 kelvins to 6,485 k. A value very close to the video standard (6,500 k) and generally more precise than on the 2022 model. Same observation at the measurement of the Delta E, noted at 2.6 (instead of 3.6 of the Tab S8 Ultra). A display of colors which is therefore better than last year.

The South Korean firm also promised better light for its tablet. Last year, we measured it at 615 cd/m²; This year, it goes up to 624 cd/m² and remains sufficient to use the tablet in a pleasant way. At the bottom, the brightness of the slab can drop to 1.6 cd/m². The coating also manages reflections (48 %reflectance) a little better than that of the previous model.

OLED technology obliges, the rate of contrast is almost infinite and the time of null. The touch delay is 52 ms, very close to that of the Tab S8 Ultra.

Performance

The ultra galaxy tab s8 already served as a reference when we were talking about power in the landscape of Android tablets. With its S9 Ultra model, Samsung puts the bar even higher by simply offering the most efficient device on the market. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is perfectly exploited and the 12 GB of integrated RAM allow the tablet to be reactive in all circumstances.

At stake, the ultra galaxy tab s9 remains capable of turning all the titles of the Play Store – and even more. On average, the tablet displays 125 i/s, with a peak at 132 i/s. In addition, it does not descend under the 120 i/s, which is very impressive.

In short, this debauchery of power is not too much to suit versatile use, whether in office automation or for relaxation. Because after all, this tablet seeks to replace a laptop.

Our performance tests are carried out with aim, the application developed by the company Smartvis.

Photo

Samsung slightly modifies the photographic formula of its Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra if it is compared to that of the Tab S8 Ultra. If the Grand Angle is identical, benefiting from a 13 megapixel sensor, the ultra grand angle goes to 8 megapixels (against 6 mpx on the previous model). But if the mechanics are not so different, it is mainly on the software part that the improvements are visible.

Main module: 13 megapixels, f/2, eq. 26 mm

On the zoom at 100 % of our scene, the Lenovo Tab Extreme brings a higher dive to the cliché captured by the tablet of Samsung. But in reality, the Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra manages to offer a slightly more detailed image as a whole. On the outskirts, she is rather convincing, which is not the case with the Lenovo model.

At night, the Samsung tablet is easily won by offering in particular better exposure as well as a better color rendering. The level of details is slightly better, but we note the appearance of microcontrasts on the usual areas, as on the map, in the center.
