When Apple announced the arrival of the iPhone 12 Mini in October, the editorial staff had two very different reactions. There are skeptics on one side, believing that Apple waste his time (and his money) to create small smartphones. But is it still possible today to take advantage of all the content offered on smartphone when the screen measures less than 6 inches ? This is a question to which we will try to answer during this test (in addition to all those to which we usually answer).

The iPhone 12 Mini is available for sale in Apple Store, operator and open-market stores from the November 13, 2020, After a week of pre -order. Each year, we are disappointed by Apple’s proposal concerning storage. Either it is too low or it is too expensive. This is still the case in 2020 with the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Mini. We do not understand why Apple still offers smartphones with 64 GB of storage when Its operating system already weighs the tenth of the proposed space. So we strongly advise you to buy the 64 GB version of the iPhone 12 Mini.

At this price, the iPhone 12 Mini competes with some of the flagships we have appreciated in recent months. We are talking in particular of the ASUS ZenFone 7 Pro and the OnePlus 8T. These are two excellent smartphones given their sale price. We could also have quoted the Mi 10t Pro from Xiaomi, as well as the Oppo and X51 reno4 pro of Vivo, without forgetting the Xperia 5 II of Sony whose full test was published in our columns a few days ago.

The Xperia 5 II, but also the Samsung Galaxy S20 and the Huawei P40, are alternatives closest to the iPhone 12 Mini in terms of positioning. They are all relatively small with beautiful technical characteristics. But they are not sophisticated enough to worry the more expensive models. Xperia 5 II is perhaps an exception to this rule.

We will not devote part of our test, but we note it once again: Apple sells a mobile at 809 euros without a sector adapter, but only with a USB cable. We largely mentioned the subject during our iPhone 12 Pro test. In France, mobile is supplied with a pair of wired earpods. We are the only country in the world in this case. And it’s almost shameful (even if it is less than with the Pro range).

Design

Let’s talk about the design of the iPhone 12 Mini. It is a smartphone that gives pride of place to Simple handling and extreme portability. Remember Steve Jobs’ demonstration during the iPhone 4 presentation Keynote. He explained then that the size of the smartphone was ideal for reaching with the thumb the most distant corners of the slab.

Here, the smartphone is a little larger than the iPhone 4 which it is strongly inspired by, but not much. 13 cm in height. 6.4 cm in width. And 7 mm thick. It is therefore possible here too to reach the different corners of the smartphone with the thumb, without having to change the position of the phone in hand. The iPhone 12 Mini is clearly the easiest smartphone to handle from Apple for a long time.

As you can see in the photos below, the iPhone 12 Mini is smaller than the iPhone 6. It is very legally larger than the iPhone 5 and much larger than the iPhone 4. You can also see that the iPhone 12 Mini is smaller than the Galaxy S20 and the Xperia 5 II. It is today the smallest high -end smartphone.

Let’s go around the product. The iPhone 12 Mini takes up the design that we have already examined with the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro. We find two mineral glass plates and an aluminum outline (stainless steel being reserved for pro) . The angles are rounded. The slices are straight. The photo block is placed in the upper left corner. The US brand claw is at the center. And a notch is present on the facade to host the telephone earphone and the facial recognition Face ID system.

On the slices, interspersed with separations for the antennas, you will find the Lightning port at the bottom with the main microphone and the main speaker (because the telephone earphone also acts as a secondary speaker, as with the iPhone 12). The differences between the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Mini are essentially physical: The first is larger than the second. This has three consequences, of course. Screen

Despite its small size, the iPhone 12 Mini offers a fairly large screen. It measures 5.4 inches (in 19.5/9th format), 0.7 inch more than the slab of the iPhone 6/6S/7 (which is however larger) and 0.7 inch less than the iPhone 12. This screen is surrounded by borders slightly thicker than those of the competition. They measure 2 mm all around the screen (except at the notch of the notch of course).

The display is therefore very bright, even outdoors, in full light. However, we find it less bright than that of the iPhone 12 Pro.

The announced definition is ” Retina XDR »». In reality, it is a Full HD+ : 1080 pixels in width and 2340 pixels in height. Contrary to popular belief, the iPhone 12 Mini offers the best resolution of all iPhone 12: 476 pixels per inch (against 458 pixels per inch for the iPhone 12 Pro Max and 460 pixels per inch for the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro).

The display is compatible HDR10 and Dolby Vision. This means that the screen displays more colors than some competitors. Colorimetry is still as well managed with a good reproduction of tones on the whole spectrum, without them being excessively vibrant. We also note an excellent contrast, with very deep blacks. It’s a nice screen.

Above the slab, you will find the new mineral glass Ceramic Shield, Developed with Corning. This glass protects the LED layer and provides good fluidity. Note that, even if the slab posted 60 images per second, the rate of refreshing the touch layer reaches the 120 Hz, Like other iPhone 12 models. Today, having a touch layer twice as fast as the display almost seems to be a standard, even if it causes additional energy consumption.

Interface

The iPhone 12 Mini comes under iOS 14, a version of the operating system we met in the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. We have devoted a complete file to the new features brought by this version of the OS. We will not come back to it here.

For those who do not know iOS, know that ergonomics is quite Close to that of the latest Android versions. Both spend a lot of time copying and reinterpreting the good ideas of the other. You will therefore find a home screen with a permanent bar for your most common applications (telephone, safari, iMessages and Apple Music by default).

By sliding to the left, you find The new widget screen. If you slide to the right, you discover a second screen for applications (and more if affinities). And by sliding again, you arrive at a new screen called Apps library which looks like it is mistaken for the Android application drawer. By sliding from the center of the screen down, you open the overall search engine with SIRI suggestions.

Finally, sliding from the top of the screen, right under the battery icon, down, you open ” Control Center “, The equivalent of the rapid setting area of ​​Android. The upstairs shifts are used to navigation: return to the reception and display the multitasking. Finally, a long support on the apps calls a contextual menu previously supported by 3D Touch. We really regret his disappearance, but Haptic Touch also does the job.

IOS 14 is, like all other versions of iOS, very supplied in preinstalled applications. But they are all developed by Apple. No commercial application here. No marketing partnership. The panoply covers all needs: office automation, entertainment, photography (and video editing), information, management of connected devices.

Some (most?) you will be useless, while others will find, perhaps, their raison d’être when you will equip yourself with a connected accessory, such as a watch, a speaker, a thermostat, a camera or a bulb. But is it really necessary to preinstall them ? Fortunately, most can be deleted to save space.

With such a screen, we also ask ourselves the question of the relevance of certain uses with the iPhone 12 Mini. Take some examples: Keynote, Numbers, Pages, Garageband and Imovie. Will you really use them with a 5.4-inch screen ? We, no. Mount a film or creating a powerpoint is not effective on such a display. Some may however have a punctual need. If this is your case, do not hesitate to share your experience in the comments.

Performance

And yet, the iPhone 12 Mini has largely the power necessary to assume all possible uses with a phone. You want to play ? It’s possible. You want to film in 4K ? Of course. And put the video directly in this little racing car ? Obviously. You want to watch a movie in Ultra HD ? This is not the ideal smartphone for that. But Apple’s A14 Bionic chipset is perfectly capable of assuming this eccentricity.

We have three comments about the results offered during benchmarks. First, the iPhone 12 Mini shows a certain consistency in long tests. With the Benchmark Wild Life Stress Test, which simulates a game game in 3D for 30 minutes, we noticed that the results of each loop are stable, apart from the 17th loop which is very different. We believe that there was an external event which caused this drop in framerate. For the rest, the iPhone 12 Mini is imperturbable.

Second remark, the iPhone 12 mini heats little, even for long tests. Yes, he heats. But it remains very reasonable. And this, despite a very low congestion. In a small smartphone, it is more difficult to regulate the temperature, especially with passive systems. Here, it is the case. It certainly goes hand in hand with the mastery of the framerate that we have observed previously.

Finally, last point, we observed once again considerably higher results in benchmarks using Metal, Apple 3D engine. The iPhone 12 Mini obtains a score 4 times higher during a metal test than during a test with OpenGL, the two calling on the same 3D animation. This means that the iPhone 12 Mini could be four times more efficient if the games are developed with Metal than with OpenGL.

Let’s talk about play, since it is the use that uses the great performances offered by the A14 Bionic the most. We tested several games, including the two we used during the iPhone 12 Pro test: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles And Dead Trigger 2. We also included FF XV Pocket Edition. The result is very satisfactory. The two games are very fluid and very reactive (sometimes the smallness of the screen does not help the maneuverability). Even if we have opted for the highest graphic parameters.

The iPhone 12 Mini could be an excellent ultraportable game console. This little power monster could even have become your favorite access platform to access Fortnite, if the latter had not been banished from the App Store. However, there are so many excellent games on iOS that you should not suffer too much from this absence. Oceanhorn 2. Cat Quest 2. Jade Empire. Monster Hunter Stories. Etc. All are fluid and provide, on this small mobile, excellent experiences.

Autonomy

To assume such a power, you normally need a battery worthy of the name. But it is not the case here. And we didn’t really expect it. For several reasons. First of all, Apple has never integrated a battery offering a capacity similar to competition in its iPhone. In equal size, an iPhone will always have a less important battery. Afterwards, Apple prefers to optimize. The firm manages to offer an excellent relationship between autonomy and capacity. Finally, The iPhone 12 Mini is small. Toddler. Which means small battery.

The battery capacity is therefore much lighter than other iPhone. And even lighter compared to competition. Smartphones disassembly specialists have published videos confirming that The battery capacity of the iPhone 12 Mini reaches 2227 mAh. It is almost twice as much as the battery of the Xperia 5 II or the Galaxy S20.

During the Benchmark Wild Life Stress Test, The iPhone 12 Mini lost 15 % of its battery in 20 minutes. Or about 0.7 % battery in one minute. This means that the battery could completely unload About 133 minutes of testing. It would therefore suffice for a 2 -hour and quarter video game game to exhaust the iPhone 12 Mini. Apple official figures confirm this impression. According to the firm, The iPhone 12 Mini offers 15 hours of video autonomy and 10 hours streaming. This represents an hour less than the iPhone XR and two hours less than the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 12. But that represents two hours more than the iPhone 8, the iPhone X and the iPhone SE 2020. Depending on our calculations, the small pimousse has a mixed autonomy that does not exceed the day.

Charge time and charger options

With such autonomy, as much to tell you that you will be very regularly (even daily) hung on your charger. Let us therefore mention the problem of the load. There are several concerns related to the load. They are not as serious as autonomy. But, the iPhone 12 Mini still suffers.

The first is the charging time. The smartphone’s technical sheet indicates that mobile is compatible with fast load 20 watts. Which is not that fast. However, with a 2227 mAh battery, it’s only half a problem. Apple announces a burden of 50 % in half an hour. And this is indeed case. To go up to 100 % you have to wait 45 more minutes. Either an hour and a quarter to load the whole battery. Oppo, with Find X2 Pro, loads 5000 mAh in less than 40 minutes.

The second concern is the cost of the fast load. Apple does not deliver a fast charger with its iPhone. Worse, the firm no longer provides a sector adapter. So there are two situations. Or, you already own an iPhone (most certainly with a Ligtning port). Either you never got it. In both cases, you will have to pay a supplement to load your phone quickly and safely.

In the first situation, you therefore already have a sector adapter and a Lightning cable with your old phone. If you had an iPhone 11 Pro or an iPhone 11 Pro Max, you are already well equipped: A Lightning cable to USB Type-C and an 18 Watts fast charger. It’s not 20 watts, but it’s already good. If you had another iPhone, you are in possession ofA very slow 5 watts charger and a Lightning cable to USB Type-A. It can be used to load the iPhone 12 Mini. But … it’s … very … long. If you want it to be faster, take out the wallet. It will cost you 25 euros in an Apple Store.

In the second situation, you may already have a quick charger. And hope it is USB type-C compatible. But beware of the power delivered, because you could damage your new iPhone (even if we think that there are security in the latter to cut the fast load and slowly load). If you need a charger, it costs 25 euros. And if you try your luck with your non-Apple charger, A Lightning to USB Type-A cable costs 25 euros at Apple (we do not recommend buying it from Aliexpress). At this price, it is better to buy the charger.

You are therefore good to buy a charger in the majority of cases. If you wish, you can also opt for a wireless charger. As much as The iPhone 12 Mini is compatible Mag Safe. But, like the wired load, this solution has defects. Indeed, the small pimousse does not support a wireless load power greater than 12 watts (against 15 watts for iPhone 12). A Magsafe charger costs 45 euros. And a Qi charger costs minimum 60 euros For a delivered power of only 7.5 watts. Mouis.

We clearly think that The wireless load was not necessary in this product (especially as it is reduced). It is obvious that a larger battery would have been largely preferable. But Apple earns a lot of money on wireless chargers. It would have been a shame to deprive yourself of it here.

Audio

In audio, the iPhone 12 Mini offers almost the same experience as the iPhone 12. You will find a Lightning port to connect helmets compatible with this connector (or adapters to buy in addition). And you also find The two speakers : one on the lower edge and another hidden in the telephone earphone.

As with the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro, Apple has treated the balance Between the main speaker, powerful, but oriented on the side, and the secondary speaker, placed on the facade towards the user, but less powerful. The result is a clear and powerful stereo audio system, offering good mediums and treble, as well as pronounced bass. In use, it’s perfect for watching a movie or playing a game.

In the latter case, beware of the positioning of the hands when you hold the smartphone horizontal: the index (right or left depending on the orientation) regularly clogs the main speaker. In this case, opt for the hands -free Earpods kit or, better, a pair of wireless headphones. The earpods kit is not the best pair of headphones in the world and the most pleasant to wear. Its main asset is to be provided in the box in France and to be compatible with Lightning.

At 800 euros per smartphone, we are still disappointed that Apple is only satisfied with the minimum service on the audio part. The brand had already Deleted the 3.5 mm jack port of his phones, preventing to connect any helmet. Then she has removed the adapter 3.5 mm jack, confirming his intentions. NOW, It removes the earpods internationally. The firm here clearly pushes consumption.

To finish on the audio part of this test, we want to return to the two microphones. Photo and video capture

Finally, let’s go to photo and video capture, two areas in which the iPhone 12 Mini is very similar to the iPhone 12, once again. And it’s normal. You have on the one hand of the same photographic equipment, two 12 megapixel sensors hidden behind two objectives opening respectively to F/1.6 and f/2.4. The first of the sensors is stabilized and equipped with a Autofocus Dual Pixel. The second objective is great angle with an angle of vision of 120 °. The whole is accompanied by a dual tone LED flash, quite wide, but quite anecdotal. And you have the same A14 bionic chipset on the other hand. And therefore the same image processing.

By day, the result offered by the iPhone 12 Mini is a fair balance between the chromatic exuberance of the Huawei and Samsung and the natural sobriety of Sony. The photos are beautiful. Perfectly balanced Between the shadow and light areas. The first keep their details, while the seconds remain mastered. And what is the sensor you choose. Image processing does not really smooth the details. You keep Pique and contrast.

The main sensor is your best ally, day and night. It allows you to take excellent photos, restoring bright colors, but not fluorescent. Contrast, brightness, pique, finesse: The iPhone 12 Mini is a good supplement camera. The counter-days are well managed (better than with most phones), with beautiful colors and even contrast, even if you will lose light. Despite a definition a little below the competition, the iPhone 12 Mini does not deserve. Far from there.

The secondary sensor also makes beautiful photos with automatic mode. Obviously, given the nature of the Grand-England lens, the photos produced by the second sensor will be slightly less bright and contrasting. Normally, it is with him that you should take proximity photos. But this is not always the most convincing choice. Also pay attention to the deformations due to the lens. The recovery is very well managed on the panoramas. Less in detail photos (second photo below).

Once the day goes to bed, the iPhone 12 mini activates night mode. It is A mode that is not manual, But integrated, as at Sony, in automatic mode. The iPhone measures the ambient brightness and adapts the break time Between 1 and 4 seconds. You have a cursor to deactivate the night mode or, on the contrary, position the time of break at the maximum by default. The result is really good, even if it does not reach, according to our observations, that of the Oppo night mode. With the main sensor, the photos are detailed and the result remains natural. And thanks to the stabilizer, the blurred are mastered. With the Grand-Angle sensor, the result is less impressive.

The portrait mode, compatible with the two rear sensors, but also with the selfie sensor, is very effective. Here too, Apple has made great progress. The subject is well insulated. The background blur is well mastered. And, by day, it is possible to take a picture of a motion subject and obtain a clear photo. So no need for the Lidar sensor of iPhone 12 pro and 12 pro max to be creative. Obviously, with the selfie sensor, the effect is even more accentuated, thanks to the Face ID module which replaces the Lidar sensor. At night, portraits are also very well managed, even if the portrait mode cannot be combined with night mode.

A remark on the zoom: there is No optical zoom Here, even 2x. You must be satisfied with a digital zoom that rises to 5x. It is a zoom that offers a few services from time to time, but which remains of passable quality by day and mediocre at night. The fault is the definition of the sensor: 12 megapixels. A digital zoom is, by nature, a widening of the pixels. The more there are pixels per inch originally, the more there will be on arrival. The hybrid zoom of the Galaxy S20 Ultra is based on the 4x optical zoom, but also on the 48 megapixels of its sensor. We don’t play in the same courtyard.

The iPhone 12 Mini offers several video modes with the possibility of going from one sensor to another in each mode. Classic video, in definition 720p, 1080p and 4k (up to 60 images per second). Slowed down in 1080p up to 240 frames per second. And accelerated. The videos made with the iPhone 12 Mini offer the same qualities as the photos: beautiful colors, beautiful contrasts, balance of light, detail.

A word to finish in the format of the photos. By default, they are recorded in ” Appleraw »(Heic file extension). All image processing software does not support it yet, especially under Windows (while MacOS is natively compatible, of course).
