On the occasion of the conference dedicated to WWDC 2022 developers, Apple took stock of the many new products that will be offered during the release of iOS 16. On the program: the possibility of customizing the locking screen, modifying or deleting messages after sending, or even extracting text from a video.

While the update will be available for all users from next fall, which iPhone models compatible with iOS 16 ?

iOS 16 is available from the iPhone 8

To take advantage of all the news announced by Apple, you must have a smartphone model compatible with the next version. On its official website, the brand announces that IOS 16 will be available for the iPhone 8 and the upper versions. This means that the iPhone SE, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 will not be able to benefit from this last update. Note that the iPod Touch, which has disappeared from the catalog of products put up for sale by Apple, will no longer take care of any new update launched by the American firm.

The list of iPhone compatible with iOS 16

Here is the list of iPhone models, which can be upgraded to receive the new version of the Apple operating system, iOS 16:

iOS 16: What iPhone are compatible ?

iOS 16 and locked screen

IOS version 16 was announced at the WWDC conference on June 6.

It has already entered the beta test phase, to be delivered in the final version for everyone in the fall, on the new iPhone (iPhone 14 and 14 pro, probably). But the old iPhone will also be able to take advantage of it of course. Let us see together which iPhone support this major update of the Apple mobile operating system, iOS 16.

What iPhone to support iOS 16 ?

Here is the list of iPhone supporting iOS 16:

  • All iPhone of 2022
  • iPhone SE (2022)
  • iPhone 13 pro and 13 pro max
  • iPhone 13 and 13 mini
  • iPhone 12 pro and 12 pro max
  • iPhone 12 and 12 Mini
  • iPhone SE (2020)
  • iPhone 11 pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone xs max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone 8 Plus

Version 15 of iOS could be installed on All iPhone from 6S models of 2015. This is the same list of compatible devices as that of iOS 14 and iOS 13. In short, since iOS 13, Apple has not put any iPhone aside with its iOS updates. This is a point to emphasize, because the Californian firm is one of the manufacturers to endure its longest mobile devices. As we have seen there, on average, an iPhone supports 4 or 5 major updates of iOS. The iPhone 6s and 6s plus supported iOS 9, iOS 10, iOS 11, iOS 12, iOS 13 and iOS 14. Which makes 6 major iOS updates. It has already happened that an iPhone is now for so much time by Apple, the iPhone 5S for example (with iOS from 7 to 12).

However, never an iPhone supported 7 software updates. In addition, the iPhone 6s and 6s plus were equipped with an A9 chip and 2 GB of RAM.

iOS 16 being logically a little more demanding in power, graphic and in RAM than IOS 15, and already greeting the excellent longevity of the iPhone 6S, it seems to us completely normal that the latter do not support iOS 16. The iPhone SE, released a few months after the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, is also equipped with an A9 chip and 2 GB of RAM. He therefore follows the same fate as that of the generation 6s: no iOS 16 for him either. Finally, iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, despite their A10 fusion chip, are also left out. They released in 2016, the same year as the first iPhone SE, which still makes them a beautiful longevity since iOS 10.

Note that there is no more iPod present in the lot, since Apple announced the stopping of the production of its iconic musical player in spring 2022.

Notice to iPhone 6s owners, 2016 and 7, stopping the support for iOS 16 could push you to move on to a more recent model ?
