What is the difference between Google Hangouts, Hangouts Meet and Google Meet ?

In April 2020, Hangouts Meet and Hangouts Chat changed its name to become Google Meet and Google Chat, respectively. In 2019, we announced to all users of the classic hangouts that they were going to have to go to new Meet and Cat products. It was in May 2020 that we announced the free provision of Google Meet, in order to offer everyone access to a professional online videoconferencing tool.

Can external people participate in a call ?

Of course. In the cheap version of Google Meet, all participants must connect with a Google account to join the meeting. You can create a Google account with a professional or personal email address.

If you are a Google Workspace customer, once the meeting is created, you can invite anyone to participate, including people who do not have a Google account. Simply share the link or meeting ID with all participants in the event.

How much is Google Meet ?

Anyone with a Google account can create a videoconference bringing together up to 100 participants for a maximum period of 60 minutes, at no cost.

Do Google Meet links have an expiration date ?

Each meeting is associated with a single code whose expiration time varies depending on the workpace product from which the meeting was created. Click here to find out more.

Frequent questions about Google Meet

Can external people participate in a call ?

Absolutely. You can share the same link with all participants. It is thus easier to bring everyone together.

Should we install anything ?

Users of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and the new version of Edge do not need to install specific plug-ins or software, because Meet works entirely in the browser. Meet’s attack surface is thus limited and it is not necessary to frequently apply security corrections to computers of end users. On mobile devices, we ask you to install the Meet application from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.

Does access by phone require a third-party service ?
