Google now translates Japanese on the fly with the translation application
Update 5.7 of Google Translation now allows you to translate on the fly of the Japanese text in English via the camera of the smartphone. Just point the lens to the characters and wait until the translation appears on the screen in superposition.
Imagine a little: you are on vacation in Japan and your tourist guide has highly recommended you to go to lunch in this little picturesque restaurant located on the mountain. Alas, the establishment is a bit too traditional because it has no international menu card. What to do ? You certainly have photographs which give a vague idea of what is in the main dishes, but impossible to know in detail what you have in front of you. And it is not your little Franco-Japanese dictionary that will be of great help.
Google translation supports Japanese
This is that an application like Google Translation can be of great help. Indeed, now for two years that the Mountain View firm offers to use the camera of your smartphone to see, detect and translate text appearing on the screen. You want to know what this road signs written in Cyrillique says ? Just point your phone in its direction, start the application and see the result. At the start, only a handful of languages was managed. Today, there are a few dozen.
From Japanese to English
With update 5.7 of the application, it is the translation between English and Japanese which is now supported. Francophones would certainly have preferred the support of French with the language of Mishima; Unfortunately, the company’s software is not yet able to detect and translate printed characters on the fly between these two languages. This will necessarily come, insofar as French is already partially taken care of and the French -speaking reservoir is one of the most important in the world. But it is not for now.
That said, this update is still a great help in the case that we mentioned in the introduction. Even if you are not completely bilingual in English, you will certainly be more likely to grasp the meaning of “Japanese Eel” after having translated a piece of the menu with the application than if you were facing “ニホンウナギ” on the map. Not everyone had the opportunity to spend a few years on the benches of Inalco.
Download the APK
The update, reported by Android Police, can be recovered in the form of an APK (Google Translate 5 file.7.0.RC02.145020128) from the apk mirror site. If you are interested in the functionality but you don’t know how to manipulate these files, know that we have prepared a guide detailing you step by step the steps to follow. Note that once the update has been done, you will need to connect to the Internet with your mobile to recover the adequate language pack, via the application options.

Google French Japanese translation
AI has allowed some of our biggest advances since we launched Google Translation. Today, we offer features based even more on artificial intelligence, to better integrate the context and make this tool more efficient, on your phone as your browser.
No more context, more relevance
This month, Google translation will provide you with more contextual translation options, with descriptions and examples in the target language. That you wanted to find the bar closest or order bar At the restaurant, you can rely on the context to find the right translation and use the adapted turns, expressions and terminology. The functionality is available in English, French, German and Japanese. Spanish will be integrated in a few weeks.
New design, new languages and new gestures
The Google Translation on Android app has recently had a facelift and in a few weeks we will change the design of the application on iOS. Our new experience offers a larger framework, to facilitate the integration of content and more accessible entry points, for the translation of conversations, voice recognition and translation via Google Lens.
Video format not supported
- New gestures : to make Google translation more accessible, including to select a language faster, by pressing the “Language” button and choosing the one that has recently been used, with a simple finger shift or while sweeping down to make the latest translations.
- More readability : thanks to a dynamic font that adjusts automatically, as the text is entered. Alternative translations and definitions (if available) are displayed to better understand the different meanings.
- New languages available offline : 33 additional languages are now available on the Google translation offline – including Basque, Corsica, Hawaiian, Hmong, Kurd, Latin, Luxembourg, Sudanese, Yiddish and Zulu. Fear of no longer having access to the network or the Internet ? You can now download even more languages upstream.
Improvement of translation from images
Google translation has long been a great tool to translate texts, but the latest advances in terms of AI allow us to go further and translate from images thanks to Google Lens. You can do what you see, from your phone’s camera from the camera. In addition, machine learning systems allow us to associate both translated text and complex images – for a more natural result. We have also extended our translation system from online images, in order to offer more options when translating the content based on images, regardless of the type of research used.
This year, we will continue to conduct experiences based on AI for Google Translation. Our goal: to provide you with faster, precise and dynamic translations, in the application and all over the world.
