Can I use the Internet with the € 2 package ?

The € 2 free mobile package includes 50 MB of Internet data. Each MO beyond is billed 5 euro cents.

Attention : We must not confuse the MO (megaoctets) and the go (gigabytes). A GO corresponds to 1000 MB.

This quantity of data is very low and if you do not deactivate the use of mobile data on your smartphone, you risk making large amounts of out-of.

Failing to offer enough data to be able to really enjoy the internet on your phone, Free gives access to its WiFi network called Free wifi. This is a network emitted by the freebox of other Free subscribers to which you can connect via identifiers provided by the operator.

Subscribers to a Freebox offer benefit from a reduction of € 2/month on this package at € 2, in other words this package is free !

This reduction is only valid for a single package 2 euros and it cannot be combined with the reduction on the Free Package.

If you subscribe to the Booster Option for Freebox subscribers remains € 2/month, and the Booster option will therefore come back to € 2.99/month.

In the event of termination of your freebox you lose the benefit of the reduction but you can keep your package, indeed the two subscriptions are not linked.

To whom is the 2 euros package ?

The 2 euros package is aimed at small consumers. It is appropriate if the user does not plan to use the Internet on mobility but only to make calls and send SMS and MMS.

It may be suitable for young adolescents as a first package to be reachable. Be careful however because the 2 euros package cannot be blocked, which means that you risk paying off-forming fees if your dear blonde head ventures on the internet or sends surcharged sms.

The history of the 2 euros package

During the launch of Free Mobile on January 10, 2012, Xavier Niel presents two packages: the Free package with unlimited calls and 3GB of data, and the 2 euros package.

This package is presented as a response to the “RSA packages” offers from other operators who were sold at € 10/month for 40 minutes of calls and only 40 SMS. Xavier Niel breaks prices on this package by offering 60 minutes of calls and 60 SMS for € 2 per month, 5 times cheaper than competition. In addition, this package is open to everyone, and not reserved only for the attributors of social minima.

The offer is then improved during the months following. In December 2012, Free joined unlimited SMS as well as 2 hours of calls. International calls to 40 destinations are also included. In January 2013, SMS to the DOMs were added. Finally in December 2013 the package joined the sending of unlimited MMS as well as 50MB of Data in 4G.

The offer has remained at the same iconic price since its launch in 2012.

In September 2022, Free launched a new option: the Booster 1 GB option. This option allows the package to transform into an offer offering unlimited calls and 1 GB of data for € 4.99/month. In October the option goes to 600 MB. In January 2023, the option returned to 1 GB but its price increased, the 1 GB package now returns to € 6.99/month.

The Booster option is significantly improved on May 31, 2023, its price amounts to € 2.99, or € 4.99/month in total for the 2 euros package with Booster option, but especially the Giga quota goes to 5GB instead 1 only giga so far. Free aligns with its competitors Red and B & You with an unlimited package with 5 GB of data for a price of € 4.99 per month.

Since when the 2 euros free package has existed ?

It all started in 2012, the launch year of the Free Mobile brand on the French market. At the time, Free Mobile did not yet have a really successful clean antennas. Suddenly, to deliver a service suitable for its first subscribers, Free Mobile initially, initially signed a roaming agreement with Orange.

We imagine that Xavier Niel was well kept to reveal to the orange pattern of the time the ultra-agressive prices that he was about to practice. After a very geek teasing which has spread over several weeks, Xavier Niel invited the press to a Keynote evoking almost those of Apple – except the tone of the speaker.

At this price, it is easy to open a line for your children, or a loved one, or to receive calls during a sale on a separate number of your personal number.

It should nevertheless be remembered that at the beginning, Free Mobile subscribers have a lot forgiven the imperfections of the service. In the absence of a clean network sufficiently deployed, the quality of the signal was at the very least variable, and the data flow fairly low.

That said, in our opinion the 2 euro free package is really what made the operator subscribers take off. At the end of 2012, the year of the launch, Free Mobile listed 5 million subscribers. Today, with more than 13 million subscribers, Free Mobile represents almost 20% of the French market. All with a quality 4G+ network, and a 5G often in front of the competition.

Opinion 2 euros free package: what is included ?

The 2 euro free package per month (free for freebox subscribers) includes 2 hours of call, unlimited SMS/MMS, 50 MB of the Internet (in 2023 the package connects to 4G+) and more or less the same thing abroad.

In our opinion the 2 euros free package is ideal for opening a simple line, for which internet data does not really count. The 2 euros free package in our opinion is ideal for opening a troubleshooting line. But this has not always been the case.

When launching the 2 euros free package in 2012, not everyone had a smartphone capable of connecting to the Internet, when today it is less the case. In terms of the distribution of subscribers in 2023 the largest subscriptions is on the Free series (€ 19.99 per month). But the 2 euros free package resists – it does not seem to be withdrawing it from the catalog immediately.

For those who mainly use SMS to communicate, the price of this subscription is simply unbeatable since the latter are unlimited in the 2 euros free package – which is even free for freebox subscribers.

In addition, the 2 euros free package is guaranteed without obligation. The customer can terminate at any time if he is not satisfied with the service or finds cheaper elsewhere. The last advantage of the 2 euros free packages is that it allows everyone to use the Freewifi service, free and limitless. This network issued by default by all Freebox in France allows you to connect to the Internet for free everywhere.

What never realize that your data is actually limited to 50 MB. This free network is based on part of the bandwidth reserved. In other words, if you are in a perimeter where there is a light freebox, you can connect to the network (like any Wi-Fi), even if you are not the owner of the Freebox.

Obviously, the flow is more limited than that of the owner of the box, but this allows you to have a good emergency solution. In our opinion, the 2 euros free package is also based on a very good network of antennas in 2023. Even if it sometimes happens, in certain rural areas, that quality is less good than on the network of operators like Orange, SFR or Bouygues Telecom.

Note that if 50 MB are too fair but you do not want to go to a package at more than € 10, Free also offers theBooster option. Sold against an additional € 4.99 per month, this option brought data to 1 GB (+1 GB in Europe). Calls also become unlimited in mainland France. However, note that even with 1 GB the package remains incompatible with the 5G free mobile network.

We can only salute the fact that the operator keeps his commitments in time. In our opinion the 2 euros free package is billed at a price like that of the Free series at 19.99 euros per month fixed since 2012, which is all in the spotlight. It is the opposite of competing operators who, after having lowered their prices in the wake of Free Mobile, again increases the price of their packages one after the other.
