Electric car charging station: how to install it ?
The installation of electric vehicles on the automotive market leads to the growing deployment of charging solutions. After purchasing an electric vehicle, the question of its recharging is essential. You can have it at home or in your business. So how to make the right choice ? What rules to follow for an electrical diagram to standards ? Engie gives you its user manual to install a charging station for electric car.
Summary
Preamble: how an electric charging station works ?
- The domestic socket: If it is possible to connect your vehicle to a sector outlet, this is strongly not recommended. Although economic, the relative power of the electrical installation can lead to a risk of overheating your electrical scheme in addition to imposing a particularly slow charge for you;
- Reinforced socket: This is the intermediate solution between the electrical terminal and the domestic socket. Equipped with a differential circuit breaker and connected to the electrical panel by a special line isolated from the rest of the electrical installation, it guarantees you a secure load. The most famous model on the market at present is the Green’up of the Legrand brand.
- Electric terminals or Wallbox: Equipped with a type 2 socket (European standard), they offer the most efficient and secure recharging system at home. They materialize by a case which is fixed to the wall. The term wallbox, which has become common, echoes the eponymous brand. But more and more companies offer their own Wallbox models. Compared to a reinforced socket, several features are available such as: power adjustment, remote configuration via a smartphone, access control or consumption control.
Installation to the standards of a charging station for an electric vehicle: the use of a professional is compulsory
The installation of an electrical terminal at home varies depending on the model and the type of recharge.
Any terminal with a minimum power of 3.7 kW must imperatively be installed by a qualified electrician with the IRVE mention (electric vehicle recharge infrastructure). It is the decree of January 12, 2017 that configures this obligation.
The IRVE qualification is issued by AFNOR or Qualifelec according to 3 levels of training:
- Level 1: terminal with a maximum power of 22 kW without specific configuration in terms of communication and supervision;
- Level 2: Maximum power terminal of 22 kW with configuration for communicating Wallbox and for station supervision;
- Level 3: terminal of a power greater than 22 kW (fast terminals).
The use of such a professional provides you with quality, secure and respectful of the NF C 15-100 electrical standard. In essence, your electrician performs an electrical diagnosis and controls the presence of an earth intake on your electrical installation before mounting the necessary equipment.
Good to know
The state has implemented financial aid for the installation of home charging stations:
- Program Adverse up to 50 % of the total amount of expenses (installation and installation of a terminal) within the limit of € 960 for an individual solution and € 1,660 for a collective solution;
- Tax credit equal to 75 % of the total expenditure amount within the limit of € 300 per load system.
You can only benefit from it on condition that you have used an Ireve qualified electrician for a home installation.
What power for an electric vehicle charging station at home ?
The electrical power of your counter must be able to support all your devices. It is possible to install charging stations with a power of 7.4 kW, 11 kW or 22 kW. The choice of charging power depends:
- Your electric subscription;
- Three -phase or single -phase current;
- Of the type of electric car. Indeed, some vehicles limit the load to 3 kW, regardless of the power of the terminal. This is particularly the case for rechargeable hybrid vehicles. For 100 % electric cars, power is limited to 7.4 kW;
- Daily mileage. The more it will be important, the more you will need a powerful terminal.
If you do not wish to review your installations, then opt for a reinforced socket whose power is limited to 3.7 kW. It is therefore recommended to recharge your vehicle during off -peak hours, when other devices are turned off.
Supply of a charging station: the essentials
The NF C 15-100 standard lists all of the rules to be observed in France to design and carry out low-voltage electrical installations. A professional ensures the presence and quality of the following elements for a reliable electrical diagram.
The circuit breaker and the differential
The choice of circuit breaker and differential depends on the power of the chosen terminal and the type of connection installed (single -phase or three -phase). It must be dedicated to the supply of the terminal.
The circuit breaker detects unusual voltages and automatically cuts the current to avoid overheating or even short circuits. Its role is to protect at least 120 % of the load.
A charging station must be protected by a curve C circuit breaker (20A for 3.7 kW single -phase and 11 kW three -phase; 40a for 7.4 kW single -phase and 22 kW three -phase).
The class A differential of 30 mA is the best to recharge an electric vehicle. This mode can regulate a domestic charging station of 3.7 kW or 7.3 kW.
Did you know ?
For some vehicles, it is possible to install an MNX coil. It must be compatible with the circuit breaker and the differential. It makes it possible to activate the circuit breaker directly by the terminal in the event of anomaly detection.
Electric cables for the installation of charging station
Two essential parameters are to be taken into account in the choice of cable:
- First, the type of electric car;
- Then, the power of the charging station and its type of intake.
To find out all the characteristics necessary for the right choice of the electric cable, you can find out about the automaker. He then communicates the maximum power supported by the vehicle as well as the type of taking he has.
Note that the wiring chosen must be compatible with an alternating current connection for the terminals for private use.
Then pay attention to the positioning of your terminal compared to the parking lot of your car. This allows you to determine the length of the cables or to provide any installation work (the more the charging station is close to the electric meter, the less expensive work).
The majority of home charging equipment is provided for an outdoor installation outdoors. However, in a garage or under an awning, the recharge will be more comfortable.
Good to know
For cars registered after 2017, a type 2 charging cable will do the trick. As a reminder, type 2 socket is the standard on electric vehicles, public terminals or wallboxes.
Optimize the use of an electric charging station
Several characteristics can be added to a terminal in order to optimize its use:
- Energy management: Using a remote monitoring system to avoid having the installation disordered during recharge. The solution chosen must be compatible with the chosen terminal and the type of electric meter installed at home.
- RFID access: Useful for terminals installed outside because it offers the possibility of defining user access rights.
- Earth resistance to 100 ohms maximum (standard NF C 15-100). This is the protection repository for electrical installations for houses. If the earth resistance exceeds this value, it is very likely that the recharge of the vehicle does not work.
In short
- There are several types of charging stations adapted to uses. They can be installed outdoors, in private residences, parking lots, businesses, in a condominium, in service stations and highway areas.
- The use of an IRVE certified professional is compulsory for the installation of an electric terminal. Its intervention also conditions your eligibility for the tax credit and the program to become.
- The choice of taking or the electric terminal is made according to your vehicle and its daily use.
- The installation of the electrical diagram of the terminal must meet the criteria of the NF C 15-100 standard (circuit breaker, repository, cable).

The IZI by EDF solutions adapted to my used electric car ?
The charging solutions that we offer are compatible with all models, from the most recent to the oldest. You will still have to pay attention to the charging cable:
- Load point side : T2 for a terminal, or te (= e/f) for a reinforced socket.
- Vehicle side : an socket of the type corresponding to your used electric car, often a T1, T2 or even T3 socket. Type 2 is the most common model.
HAS know : We offer, as an option, a T2/T2 charging cable (T2 T2 side, T2 Side T2 Side) with a length of 5m, to connect your terminal to your terminal !
Is it possible to install my outdoor charging equipment rather than inside my garage ?
