Disney+ will improve the sound of its Marvel films available in Imax

Disney wants to transform your living room into a real cinema room. Mickey’s group has announced that he was going to offer a DTS sound track on IMAX films available in the catalog of its Disney streaming platform+.

Sound 5.1 on Disney+

The DTS – or Digital Theater Sound – is a sound format with 5 encoding in 5.1 channels. Appeared for the first time in the cinema in 1993 with Jurassic Park From Steven Spielberg, this format then became one of the standards of its most used in theaters.

If the type of DTS (Standard, HD Master Audio, X …) is not yet known, the sound track will be available in 2023 for all content in Imax on the Disney platform+. No official list has yet been revealed, but in France this concerns the 10 Marvel titles for the moment:

• The guards of the galaxy (2014)
• Doctor Strange (2015)
• Captain America: Civil War (2016)
• The guards of the galaxy – Volume 2 (2017)
• Ant-man and the wasp (2018)
• Thor: Ragnarok (2018)
• Black Panther (2018)
• Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
• Avengers: Endgame (2019)
• Captain Marvel (2019)

The IMAX format offers an image 26 % larger than the traditional cinema ratio, and it has become the favorite format of directors like Christopher Nolan or Denis Villeneuve. Note that if Disney+ is the only major streaming platform to offer the IMAX format (also available on Iqiyi, Rakuten TV, Bravia Core, etc.), Netflix has already been offering the Dolby Digital sound track for almost ten years.

In September 2021, Disney+ crossed a first step by offering the IMAX format on a dozen Marvel films. As a reminder, this format provides a larger image, of the order of 26%, that the ratio traditionally used in the cinema. Prestigious directors no longer swear by IMAX cameras, like Denis Villeneuve (Dune, Prisoners, First Contact) without forgetting Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer, Tenet, Interstellar).

In France, only 10 films are offered in IMAX format on Disney+. Here is the full list:

DTS and Disney declared in a press release that the DTS sound track for IMAX “will allow a high end -to -end experience, specially calibrated to offer home fans an image of Imax quality and sound ”. Be careful, let us specify that for the moment, Disney did not specify what type of DTS (Standard, HD Master Audio, X, etc.) it will be.
