Logitech G Cloud (2022)
May 16, 2023 05/16/2023 • 08:00
After the surprise announcement of a new entering the market in full effervescence of portable consoles, Logitech G Cloud is today a reality. This machine is the fruit of the partnership between two gaming giants: Logitech and Tencent. The ambition is immense: making cloud gaming the future evolution of traditional video game. To fulfill its goal, Logitech surrounded itself with two video game behemoths: Microsoft causing the Cloud Gaming Xbox and Nvidia service with its GeForce Now service. These are the two main players today of cloud gaming in the world and in particular in France. Stadia, Google’s service, has definitely closed on January 19 and Luna, the Amazon platform, is not available in Europe for the time being in Europe.
The Cloud Gaming market is only in its infancy. Sales of dematerialized games have exploded in recent years and represent 80 % of sales of PS4 and PS5 games at Sony in 2021 for example. At this rate, the disappearance of physical games is only a matter of time and the Cloud Gaming is the logical continuation of this transformation.
What is the cloud gaming ? Cloud gaming is being able to play in streaming, without having the game previously installed on its machine. The only prerequisite is to have an internet connection and preferably, of quality. This is the condition for avoiding all the undesirable effects of this still perfectible technology: freezes, latency or instability of graphic quality and framerate. And even with a good flow, the player remains dependent on possible breakdowns of the service he uses.

The console tested is a copy purchased in Canada. It is only available for now in North America. An outing in Europe is scheduled in 2023, but Logitech did not communicate to us a specific date. The Xbox Cloud Gaming (BETA) application, installed by default on the console, is not yet available in French. We will obviously not hold it against it, especially since the Xbox Game Pass app is better and is available in French.

Design: ergonomics and comfort are the watchwords
Ergonomic, light and comfortable ! These are the reactions that most American testers have shared by taking charge of this console for the first time and they are right. It holds perfectly in hand, it is more compact than the steam deck of valve and weighs less: 463 grams against 669 grams for the steam deck.
It is heavier than the Nintendo Switch, of course, but thanks to its ergonomic design, the difference is not very noticeable and even after long game sessions, fatigue is less important than with a classic Nintendo Switch.
The manufacturing quality is there. It seems solid in hand, the finishes are up to what we expect from a company like Logitech. The yellow tones of the two sticks and the G button of Logitech Gaming bring a colored touch to the G Cloud without going into bad taste as is sometimes the case for gamers of gamers.

Logitech G Cloud is not free from defects. The sticks lack rigidity to the touch and do not compete with those present on the steam deck. They remain more pleasant to take in hand than those of the Switch, but are less precise in the use. The directional cross was not the priority of Logitech on this console. Too soft and above all, the diagonal requires excessively energetic support on the two corresponding directions. In an old -fashioned combat game, the sequences will therefore be complicated to accomplish. Fortunately, current games rarely require the use of the directional cross for the benefit of the sticks.

Abxy pimples are arranged in the same way as on an Xbox controller. Logitech even went further: general ergonomics is almost identical to that of an Xbox controller. The G yellow color button is used in the Xbox Cloud Gaming app like the Xbox Xbox button, that is to say !
The advantage of these choices taken by Logitech is that this G Cloud is ” Plug & Play »For the Xbox Cloud Gaming service. No prior adjustment will therefore be necessary. It is however regrettable that the Abxy pimples do not benefit from a better haptic return. They are too soft and incomparable with those of a real Xbox controller.
The triggers L1, R1, L2, and R2 are again very close to those found on an Xbox controller. The only reproach we have, especially on the L2 and R2 triggers is that they would benefit from being wider. They are narrow and in general, it lacks space in terms of the handles of this console. Logitech was forced to compromise so that this G Cloud keeps a reasonable size. We would have preferred shorter borders around the screen to gain space.
Start and option buttons are present on both sides of the screen and work, again, as on an Xbox controller. They sink too easily to our taste in the console chassis during support, but they emit a powerful click in return.
A home button is also part. It is below the right stick, as opposed to the G button.
Above the console, volume adjustment buttons are present. There is also a button power which slips from the right to the left. To turn on or turn off the console, you will have to take care to maintain this button on the left for a few seconds. A hatch is positioned at the top right of the console hiding a micro SD card location.
Below the console, two grooves act as stereo speakers. A placement facing the user would have been preferable for better immersion. Fortunately, the sound produced by these two speakers is rather qualitative and powerful. For followers of the wired helmet and those who do not support the discrepancies between the sound and the image, a 3.5 mm jack is in the game. Finally, a USB-C 3 port.1 allows both recharge and data transfer.
We regret the absence of a video outing unlike Steam Deck or the Nintendo Switch. It is therefore impossible to display your game on an external screen and you will not have to rely on a possible dock to be able to do it. At least for the moment.
Screen: OLED to absent subscribers
On a cloud gaming portable console, three characteristics are essential to play in the best possible conditions: ergonomics, connectivity and the screen. Technical characteristics such as processor, graphics card and even storage are secondary.
Razer is better … well almost
Disappointment of play is the LCD screen. At 350 dollars excl. The disappointment does not stop there. The definition of this LCD screen is 1080p. It’s better than the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck. However, the “Ultimate” Subscription GeForce Now authorizes a higher definition of which users of this G Cloud will not be able to benefit. The last cold shower is the cooling rate. 60 frames per second, this is the minimum union. Again, the GeForce Now service allows you to go more with 120 images per second for its subscription ” ultimate When the game offers it.
Not everything is negative. The LCD screen of this Logitech G Cloud is satisfactory, even pleasant for cloud gaming. Our tests gave the positive results. The contrasts are excellent with a ratio of 1519: 1 and the console covers the entire SRGB colorimetric spectrum. The screen is bright. On the technical sheet, Logitech announces 450 Nits. We have measured 470 nits on our side, which is even better than expected. Only the accuracy of the colors is set back with a medium delta e of 6.58; far and even very far from good students who get a score less than or equal to 3.

The seven -inch diagonal is comfortable and allows you to play all types of games without having to fold your eyes.
Finally, and this is the major advantage of this screen, its format is ideal for cloud gaming. With a 16/9 format, all games will appear in full screen, whatever the service used. No black bars on the sides unlike the Razer Edge, its main competitor, whose format is identical to that of a smartphone. Only shade on the board, the borders around the screen would have gained fine.
Performances & interface: a bad Android tablet
Testing logitech G Cloud as a game console or Android tablet is an error. We have exchanged with Logitech and the integration of Android on the G Cloud notes, what we understand, of a default choice. Android is open source which limits the costs of development and purchase of licenses and the applications of the cloud gaming services are all available for free on the Play Store.
Retractive performances for its price
Logitech G Cloud is equipped with a Snapdragon 720g chip and 4 GB of RAM. The Snapdragon 720g is a mid -range SoC obtaining an antutu score of approximately 310,000 points. For comparison, the Snapdragon G3X Gen 1 which equips the Razer Edge, is almost three times more powerful. With 4 GB of RAM, Logitech G Cloud is not optimized to run gourmet games on Android. The majority of the toy library will run smoothly, but for more demanding games like GENSHIN IMPACT or even Fortnite, It will be necessary to make important concessions on the graphic part to hope to play without slowdowns.
By comparing the performance of this Logitech G Cloud with the Samsung Galaxy A72 equipped with an equivalent chip, we obtain very close scores. The Galaxy A72 does slightly better, but it is equipped with 6 to 8 GB of RAM.
An interface designed for gaming
Regarding the operating system strictly speaking, it is Android 11 with an overlay signed Logitech. Two interfaces are offered to the user. Tablet mode is a classic Android interface with a home screen, a notification bar and a drop -down menu to display all the apps installed. The second mode, implemented by Logitech, is the portable mode using the physical controls of the console and presenting itself as a gaming oriented interface. It looks like the PlayStation interface with applications exposed in the form of tiles, aligned next to each other. The last tile on the right is a drop -down menu listing all the applications installed.

After a few weeks of testing, we favor the tablet interface which is functional and efficient. The interface signed Logitech is on interesting paper, but very perfectible. The notification bar is inaccessible with this mode. We will have to go through the menu ” Messages “Being at the top left of the home screen and which presents itself as a notifications hub. The idea is commendable, but, in practice, the Android notification bar is accessible from any application when this hub is only from reception. Fortunately, holding the Home button, a quick menu in the form of a shutter will appear to the left of the screen. Through this menu, it will be possible to switch to plane mode, adjust the brightness and volume. It’s already that !
The other unpleasant surprise is the whole sequence necessary for the passage in tablet mode from the portable mode. You have to go to the settings, select the “Information on the device” menu then click on “Go to tablet mode”. Why not just used the G physical button to switch from one mode to another ?

A missing element on this G Cloud, even if it is not essential, is a counter of the number of images per second. The steam deck offers this feature and it is, in addition, very easy to access.
Last point to remember about this interface is that the Logitech G Cloud runs on Android 11. While Android 13 is being deployed on Android smartphones, the G Cloud accuses two versions of delay. Logitech reassured us about the software monitoring of this console since updates are scheduled soon, in particular to improve the portable mode. For the time being, however, no update to Android 12 or 13 is planned.

Cloud Gaming: the best simply
For cloud gaming, the connectivity part of the device must be up. On this G Cloud, the observation is half-fig, half grape. The G Cloud is equipped with a Wi-Fi 5 chip (802.11 AC). Its competitor, the Razer Edge is equipped with Wi-Fi 6th, the latest Wi-Fi standard. The G Cloud is delayed in the face of its competitor, but benefits from the 2 × 2 Mimo, that is to say two reception antennas and two antennas in broadcast. In fact, this technology results in excellent stability in the flow. Stability is crucial for cloud gaming parts, because it is the connection that determines the quality of display and fluidity. With a good connection, Xbox Cloud Gaming or GeForce Now works without any slowdown or variation of graphic quality. Latency in terms of controls exists, but remains minimal. For multiplayer parts, the most enthusiastic will favor steam deck, PC or Xbox to have the game locally and reduce the latency as much as possible.
Logitech could also have added 5G connectivity to be able to actually play anywhere. The manufacturer therefore favors domestic use. The Razer Edge will have the right to a 5G version which will make the console really nomadic provided it is in a territory covered by the 5 g.
Do we still need to install your game ?
After several weeks of cloud gaming with the Xbox Cloud, the GeForce Now and a pinch of Google Stadia, the conclusion is final: it is an excellent portable platform of Cloud Gaming. The Xbox Cloud is particularly effective thanks to its ease of use. By launching the Xbox Game Pass of the Play Store or the Xbox Cloud Gaming (BETA) application preinstalled on the console, we access the entire gaming library available in Cloud on the Game Pass. It will then be enough to launch the game. A short loading time will be necessary before the launch of the game. The latter is more or less long depending on the internet connection of the player and the Xbox servers. The icing on the cake, the backup is automatic and recorded on the cloud, so we resume its game where we left it.
The comfort of play is there, the screen contributes to the immersion of the player thanks to its large diagonal. The controls are easy to access and perfectly respond to the player. The experience with the Xbox Cloud Gaming is more than satisfactory, especially on solo games. The main defect of this service is its definition supposed to reach 1080p, but which tends to decrease in the slightest movement or stage of action. The image is then pixed up and the rendering is much less convincing. With the GeForce Now service, the result is much more qualitative in terms of image quality, but its use is less intuitive than the Xbox Cloud Gaming. And above all, you will have to buy the games unlike the Xbox Cloud which offers games for free with the Ultimate subscription.
Unlike the Razer Edge designed from a small Android tablet and a Razer Kichi V2 Pro controller, Logitech G Cloud is a real game console like the Nintendo Switch Lite. Its objective is to offer the best possible experience of Cloud Gaming. On this point, the G Cloud is a success and surpasses its competitor from Razer for two reasons. The first is its best ergonomics than that of a Razer Kichi V2 controller which equips the Razer Edge. The second reason is its much more suitable screen format for cloud gaming.
Logitech has therefore managed to make a convincing Cloud Gaming portable console offering a more than satisfactory game experience, with access to a very supplied game catalog for finance and ergonomics rather in the high average of the market. To this is added an excellent endurance authorizing parts of several hours without recharging the console.
Autonomy: what is the charger for ?
This is truly the other strong point of this Logitech G Cloud. Inside this console, a 6000 mAh battery with the key, many parts in perspective on the same load. Logitech announces twelve hours of autonomy. By playing mainly at the Xbox Cloud and the GeForce Now service, we get just over nine hours of autonomy and there was still battery. The autonomy announced by Logitech is therefore very close to the real autonomy that we have noted.
Compared to the steam deck and even to the Nintendo Switch, it’s just excellent. The mobile chip used is efficiently speaking and the few resources required for Cloud Gaming explains this performance. The console will be less enduring if it is used as an Android game console, but it is difficult for us to recommend it for this use.
The G Cloud is compatible with the Quick Charge 3.0 up to 18 W. It will therefore take two thirty minutes to fully load the console. We have seen faster, but it is more than enough given the endurance of the battery.
Price and availability
Logitech G Cloud was launched on October 17, 2022 in the United States and Canada for a price of 349 US dollars. In pre -order, a reduction of 50 US dollars was applied bringing the price to 299 US dollars. This reduction is still in force at a time when we write this article. There is only one configuration. The console is white in color with yellow tones, it is equipped with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage with the possibility of extending the memory thanks to its location for micro SD card. No precise date for the moment for an release in Europe, and therefore in France, but a launch is normally planned this year.

The price is the subject that divides on this logitech G Cloud. This is the only Cloud Gaming console at least, displayed as such. It therefore has no competitor, but looking at the side of the smartphones market, it is difficult not to compare its configuration with that of a smartphone at equivalent prices. 350 dollars for this configuration, it’s excessive. If you only refer to its technical sheet, logitech G Cloud is a poor value for money – price. The Snapdragon 720g chip was released in 2019, three years before the G Cloud release. At an equivalent price, the Samsung Galaxy A33 is more efficient with a score of more than 400,000 points on Antutu or 100,000 points more than this G Cloud. Beyond these performances, the A33 is equipped with a camera, an AMOLED screen signed Samsung much better than that of this G Cloud, and 5G.
The Razer Edge, a direct competitor of the G Cloud, which arrives very soon in North America, is offered at 399 US dollars, or $ 50 more dollars. But, at this price, the Razer Edge has a much more muscular configuration with its Snapdragon G3x Gen 1 and its 8 GB of RAM, an OLED screen with a cooling rate of 144 images per second and a 6th Wi-Fi chip.
On the other hand, the Logitech G Cloud, except the technological choice of its screen, is much more consistent for Cloud Gaming than the Razer Edge. It will be much more suitable for this use thanks to its best ergonomics and a much more comfortable screen format than that of the Razer Edge. To monitor therefore, especially if other competitors occur by its release in France by its release.
