Like the iPhone 11 Pro, the iPhone 11 offers Dolby Atmos compatibility with its speakers. Without deliver a spacialization of the sound as advanced, with height effects and all the toutim of an audio system worthy of the name, the speakers of the iPhone 11 give a very appreciable stereo width.

Screen

For its screen, the iPhone 11 remains the most poorly off of the 2019 family. Indeed, the most affordable Apple smartphones of this year was not entitled to a passage to the OLED. It is satisfied with an LCD slab, with a contrast necessarily much lower. Here we measure it at 1,564: 1, honest for this slab technology. Apple confines its iPhone 11 to the LCD, of course, but it does not mean that it neglects the colorimetric rendering. We measured a Delta E at 1.7, reflecting excellent color fidelity. The color temperature is established for 6,661 k, very close to the expected standard (6,500 k). Nothing to say on this side, the iPhone 11 has one of the best LCD screens on the market.

In terms of the absence of evolution, let us quote the definition of the screen which remains at 1,792 x 828 px. This remains sufficient to offer a resolution of 326 ppi, suitable for the vast majority of uses of a smartphone. The responsiveness of the iPhone 11 display is very good. Tactile delay points to 59 ms, while the remanence reaches 16 ms.

Performance

It is an area in which the iPhone 11 does not have much to envy its big brothers, and that of performance. It benefits from the same A13 Bionic chip as the pro models and benefits from its very comfortable power. Fluidity is the key word for the use of the iPhone 11. He is capable of juggling between gourmet applications without flexing. Nothing scares the iPhone 11. The locking of iOS nevertheless prevents us from making the same test battery as on Android.

The iPhone 11 is equipped with a battery of 3,110 mAh, and Apple announces a higher autonomy than that of the 30 -minute iPhone XR. iOS preventing us from carrying out our usual autonomy tests, we use a video reading test on Netflix. In this exercise, the iPhone 11 will have held 13 h 27 min, barely more than the iPhone XR. In practice, we cannot say that we feel a big difference. The autonomy of the iPhone 11 remains particularly solid with approximately 2 days of standard use and a good day and a half in intensive use.

I started using my first iPhone only 2 years ago with the iPhone X. I haven’t changed your smartphone since, if not for Frandroid tests. Accustomed to having the iPhone X, which is relatively compact compared to smartphones of 2019, the iPhone 11 seems to me, both significantly wider and slightly higher. We do not reach the heights of giant smartphones released this year like the OnePlus 7 Pro: the iPhone 11 remains usable at any time before being stored in a pocket. Just know that if the size is an important criterion for you, it may be better to go to an iPhone XS or an iPhone 11 Pro.

As always with Apple, the finishes are exemplary and we really have an impression of quality in hand, with a concern for detail even in the symmetry of the speakers around the Lightning port.

One of the new features of this iPhone 11 is its new photo module. It is now a square block that allows the protuberance to cut in half, and therefore smooth it in the eyes of the user. We indeed have the block which stands slightly from the phone, then each perspective which stands slightly from the block. Apple chooses one year more to integrate a simple LCD screen with a fairly light definition of 1782 x 828 pixels, for a diagonal of 6.1 inch, in its smartphone yet marketed at more than 800 euros. It is not very important, however, since the LCD panel chosen by Apple is of very good quality. The reason is simple, iOS manages the display in DCI-P3 or SRGB for each application independently, and the application used for our test is set in SRGB.

Unsurprisingly the screen displays the SRGB color space without problem (106 %), and the fact with almost perfect precision since we noted a delta e of only 0.9 on average (we consider a delta e of 3 or less as being an invisible difference in the naked eye). The average color temperature is just as excellent: 6582 k (the temperature of the white sun light is 6500 k).

On the brightness side is also very good, since we have noted a maximum brightness of 650 cd/m² (excellent for an LCD screen) and minimum of 2.25 cd/m². LCD slab obliges, the contrast rate is not infinite: we have measured 1477: 1 which is once again very good for this type of display.

This is not a perfect tool: faces can become blurred and details get lost but overall, we are amazed. It works the same way on the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. The latter also has a telephoto lens which can also use the night mode. On the other hand, we cannot use it with the ultra-angle.

Deep Fusion, Kézako ?

The Deep Fusion mode introduced by iPhone 11 improves the quality of the shots in low light. When you press the trigger, your smartphone does not take one but 8 images. The first four will be made with a quick shutter speed, to stabilize the subject. The next four will have a “normal” exposure time and the last shooting, when you press the photo button, will be longer to capture more light. These images are then combined and you end up with a single image that pulls the best of each photo.

Ultra Grand Angle

The “slofie” function allows you to take selfies in slow motion, in other words videos but difficult to do something because the size of the files is substantial.

Performances and autonomy

The gain of an hour of additional autonomy on the iPhone 11 compared to the XR is not huge. Especially since the iPhone Pro and Pro Max promise 4 to 5 hours more compared to the iPhone XS and XS Max.

Each iPhone 11 is animated by an A13 SOC and 4 GB of RAM. They are a little faster in monotonous and much more efficient in multitasking. The graphic performances are excellent and approach those of the iPad Pro from last year.

However, we are more interested in the service of the battery. Iphone endurance has often disappointed us, but the XR took a big step forward. According to our experience so far, it seems that all the models of iPhone 11 have an autonomy in progress. These are the 11 pro that hold the longest.

The other points to be noted

The iPhone 11 takes up the iPhone XR screen. The “Super Retina XDR” slab of iPhone 11 Pro models is technically higher, more radiant and brighter than that of the iPhone 11. But when they are compared to side by side, most users find it difficult to find a difference. Apple did an excellent job on the “Liquid Retina” LCD screen of the iPhone 11.

No USB-C or reversible load. The iPhone 11 Pro comes with an 18-watts charger and a Lightning/USB-C cable. The “classic” iPhone 11 is satisfied with a 10W block.

No more water resistance. The iPhone 11 is designed to withstand water up to 2 meters deep in water (4 meters for pro and pro max) and for 30 minutes.

More solid ? Last year’s iPhone XS surprisingly resisted our fall test. The XR, not as well. All iPhone 11 have a new glass developed by Corning and presented by Apple as the most resistant ever used on a smartphone.

A new U1 chip. The iPhone 11 have a new U1 chip. Ultrawideband (UWB) is a technology that can offer more precise location functions than Bluetooth. Apple promises that with the U1 chip, Airdrop will now work more precisely by pointing an iPhone 11 to another iPhone 11.

Is the iPhone XR the right plan ?

The iPhone XR, the direct ancestor of the iPhone 11, now costs 100 euros less (from 709 euros). If you are not interested in a high-angle camera or night photos, we recommend the XR. And if you already have the XR, the iPhone 11 is certainly not a sufficient reason to change it.

Is the iPhone 11 Pro for you ?

For us, the “standard” iPhone 11 has everything you may need for its price, except for telephoto lens. Does the third objective, the greater autonomy, the brighter OLED screen and the stainless steel case justify spending 350 euros more ? It depends on the value you give to these characteristics.

Conclusion

If our preference is going to the iPhone 11 Pro this year, we recommend the iPhone 11 to all users of “old machines” who want a new “accessible” iPhone. In our opinion, there is little reason to change if you have an iPhone last year or even an iPhone X. Also be aware that next year’s iPhone could be part of a renewal cycle that will likely include 5G.
